Launching the imagination : A comprehensive guide to two-dimensional design
Launching the Imagination treats design as both a verb and a noun—as both a process and a product. Lattice Boltzmann Modeling : An Introduction for Geoscientists and Engineers
Lattice Boltzmann models have a remarkable ability to simulate single- and multi-phase fluids and transport processes within them. A rich variety of behaviors, including higher Reynolds numbers flows, phase separation, evaporation, condensation, cavitation, buoyancy, and interactions with surfaces can readily be simulated. This book provides a basic introduction that emphasizes intuition and simplistic conceptualization of processes. It avoids the more difficult mathematics that underlies LB models. The model is viewed from a particle perspective where collisions, streaming, and particle-particle/particle-surface interactions constitute the entire conceptual framework. Since 1995, when Costas Fotakis first brought together restorers and scientists to discuss the potential of lasers in art conservation, the field has grown enormously in importance, and today restorers and laser scientists work together to develop new applications. This book presents the more than six dozen research papers prepared for LACONA V (Lasers in Art Conservation), held in Osnabrueck/Germany in September 2003. The fifth congress once again gathers restorers, art historians, museum staff, laser scientists and laser manufacturers. The topics include, among others: laser cleaning of artworks (case studies and side effects), removal of former conservation layers, fundamentals of laser-artwork interaction, online monitoring and process control, laser diagnostics, spectroscopy for monitoring and identification, networks and co-operation projects.

The conference was organized and sponsored by the Institute for Parallel Processing at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. More than 120 participants from all over the world attended the conference representing some of the strongest research groups in the field of advanced largescale scientific computing. The proposed consensus models focus on the treatment of non-cooperative behaviors in the consensus-reaching process and explores the influence of trust loss on the consensus-reaching process.The logic behind is as follows: firstly, a clustering algorithm is adopted to reduce the dimension of decision-makers, and then, based on the clusters’ opinions obtained, a consensus-reaching process is carried out to obtain a decision result acceptable to the majority of decision-makers.

Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing ; Vol. 2481 : 15th Workshop, LCPC 2002, College Park, MD, USA, July 25-27, 2002, Revised Papers
LCPC 2002 brought together over 60 researchers from academia and research institutions from many countries. The program of 26 papers was selected from 32 submissions. Each paper was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members and sometimes by additional reviewers. Prior to the workshop, revised versions of accepted papers were informally published on the workshop’s website and in a paper proceedings that was distributed at the meeting. This year, the workshopwas organizedinto sessions of papers on related topics, and each session consisted of two to three 30-minute presentations.Based on feedback from the workshop,the papers were revised and submitted for inclusion in the formal proceedings published in this volume. Two papers were presented at the workshop but later withdrawn from the ?nal proceedings by their authors. We were very lucky to have Bill Carlson from the Department of Defense give the LCPC 2002 keynote speech on “UPC: A C Language for Shared M- ory Parallel Programming.” Bill gave an excellent overview of the features and programming model of the UPC parallel programming language.
Languages and Compilers for High Performance Computing ; 17th International Workshop, LCPC 2004, West Lafayette, IN, USA, September 22-24, 2004, Revised Selected Papers
Cetus is a compiler infrastructure for the source-to-source transformation of programs. Since its creation nearly three years ago, it has grown to over 12,000 lines of Java code, been made available publically on the web, and become a basis for several research projects. We discuss our experience using Cetus for a selection of these research projects. The focus of this paper is not the projects themselves, but rather how Cetus made these projects possible, how the needs of these projects influenced the development of Cetus, and the solutions we applied to problems we encountered with the infrastructure. We believe the research community can benefit from such a discussion, as shown by the strong interest in the mini-workshop on compiler research infrastructures where some of this information was first presented.

The book presents recent estimates of the rates in changes of major land classes such as forest, cropland and pasture. Among the causative mechanisms behind land change, synergetic factor combinations are found to be more common than single key factor explanations. Aggregated globally, multiple impacts of local land changes are shown to significantly affect central aspects of Earth System functioning. Innovative developments and applications in the fields of modeling and scenario construction are presented.
