Dissipative Solitons : From Optics to Biology and Medicine
The dissipative soliton concept is a fundamental extension of the concept of solitons in conservative and integrable systems. It includes ideas from three major sources, namely standard soliton theory developed since the 1960s, nonlinear dynamics theory, and Prigogine's ideas of systems far from equilibrium. These three sources also correspond to the three component parts of this novel paradigm. This book explains the above principles in detail and gives the reader various examples from optics, biology and medicine. These include laser systems, optical transmission lines, cortical networks, models of muscle contraction, localized vegetation structures and waves in brain tissues.
Dissecting Discrimination : Identifying Its Various Faces and Their Sources
This book examines the phenomenon of discrimination using a descriptive approach. Discrimination is omnipresent, whether it is people who discriminate against other people or, more recently, also machines that discriminate against people. The first part of the analysis employs decision theory on discrimination, leading to two fundamental subtypes: taste-based discrimination and statistical discrimination. The second part links taste-based discrimination to social identity theory, demonstrates that not all taste-based discrimination is ultimately statistical discrimination, and reveals the evolutionary origins of our tastes.

The oral cavity is the part of the mouth behind the teeth and the gums surrounded by the soft palate, which is the movable layer hanging from the back of the hard palate and ending in the nasal cavity and under the tongue and the mucous membrane connecting it with the inner part of the jaw. It is considered the entrance of food and drink into the digestive system and an entrance to the air into the respiratory system and it contains the teeth through which the chewing process begins, and on the tongue, which plays a fundamental role in the process of taste and swallowing and is also used by humans in speech to communicate with others, and animals use it to make sounds.
Dislocation and Degradation of Proteins from the Endoplasmic Reticulum
The present volume of Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology c- tains seven chapters that illuminate various aspects of a protein’s genesis and terminal fate in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Increased knowledge of the biosynthetic pathways of glycoproteins allowed the identi?cation of the ER as an important site where such quality control decisions were made.
Discrete-Time Markov Chains : Two-Time-Scale Methods and Applications
The motivation stems from existing and emerging applications in optimization and control of complex hybrid Markovian systems in manufacturing, wireless communication, and financial engineering. Much effort in this book is devoted to designing system models arising from these applications, analyzing them via analytic and probabilistic techniques, and developing feasible computational algorithms so as to reduce the inherent complexity. Diophantine Approximation : Festschrift for Wolfgang Schmidt
This volume contains 22 research and survey papers on recent developments in the field of diophantine approximation. The first article by Hans Peter Schlickewei is devoted to the scientific work of Wolfgang Schmidt. Further contributions deal with the subspace theorem and its applications to diophantine equations and to the study of linear recurring sequences. The articles are either in the spirit of more classical diophantine analysis or of geometric or combinatorial flavor. In particular, estimates for the number of solutions of diophantine equations as well as results concerning congruences and polynomials are established. Digital Signal Processing with Field Programmable Gate Arrays
Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are revolutionizing digital signal processing as novel FPGA families are replacing ASICs and PDSPs for front-end digital signal processing algorithms. Digital Photogrammetry : A Practical Course
The main part of the book contains several tutorials. In increasing complexity, accompanied by texts explaining further theory, the reader can proceed step by step through the particular working parts. Most of the standard work in Digital Photogrammetry is shown and trained for example scanning, image orientation, mono and stereo plotting, aerial triangulation measurement (manual and automatic), block adjustment, automatic creation of surface models via image matching, creation of ortho images and mosaics, and others. Not only standard situations are dealt with but also more complex ones, such as unknown camera data, extreme relief or areas with very low contrast. Examples of both aerial and close-range photogrammetry present the power of these type of measurement techniques.
