The Influence of National Competition Policy on the International Competitiveness of Nations : A Contribution to the Debate on International Competition Rules
Two fields of economic research in competition policy have gained in importance in times of economic globalization. Firstly, globalization has resurrected the debate whether there is a need for international competition rules against private anticompetitive practices and how these rules could be implemented in the best way. Secondly, the concept of the international competitiveness of nations has become a significant issue for all open economies. The discussion of both themes directs the attention to a specific interface of these two issues. The implementation of international competition rules would limit or even eliminate national competition policy. The matter in question is to what extent national competition policy has to be regarded as a factor of international competitiveness so that national antitrust policy should be given priority over international antitrust rules.

The Indigenous Identity of the South Saami : Historical and Political Perspectives on a Minority within a Minority
This book is a novel contribution in two ways: It is a multi-disciplinary examination of the indigenous South Saami people in Fennoscandia, a social and cultural group that often is overlooked as it is a minority within the Saami minority. Based on both historical material such as archaeological evidence. This book highlight the culture and living conditions of this indigenous group, mapping the negotiations of different identities through the interaction of Saami and non-Saami people through the ages. By illuminating this under-researched field, the volume also enriches the more general debate on global indigenous history, and sheds light on the construction of a Scandinavian identity and the limits of the welfare state and the myth of heterogeneity and equality.
The Inclusion of Other Women : Breaking the Silence through Dialogic Learning
Recognizes a reality, our reality, that of the “other women”. Why are we the “other women”? Because we are women who, given the fact that we have not had the chance to obtain an academic education, were silenced and have remained outside of the spaces for public debate about women. This exclusion is worse if we are immigrants or belong to an ethnic minority. Those of us who are housewives, domestic workers or factory workers, because we do not have academic degrees, do not have spaces in which our voices can be heard, where we can say what we want. At times women whose voices are heard, because they have been able to go to university or have been leaders in the feminist movement, speak for all of the other women who have not been able to get a formal education, without asking us what it is we really want or think.
The Improvement of Technology Transfer : An Analysis of Practices between Graz University of Technology and Styrian Companies
DHe has done a remarkable work in examining technology transfer between Graz University of Technology and Styrian companies. As the author shows, the results presented in this book are not only valid for the specific setting in Styria, one of nine states of Austria, but also for other regions dealing with this specific topic. He based his results on detailed empirical examinations which allowed the introduction of target groups of university researchers and companies defined by a set of characteristics. Thus the work enables parties involved in technology transfer to act according to the specific needs of the participants. Formerly, this knowledge was available at best implicitly, i.e. experienced university researchers or managers used to deal with each other thus knowing well the others’ expectations. Inexperienced fellows had to build up this knowledge gradually.
The Importance and Value of Older Employees
Reports on original research and provides a positive consideration of the contribution of older workers. The existing literature tends to focus on the barriers, discrimination and problems, which older workers face so this is a useful corrective to that. The book will be of interest to both practitioners and researchers in the field.
The Impact of Individual Expertise and Public Information on Group Decision-Making
Concludes that expertise could be the key factor for global and interconnected problems. Experimental results have shown that expertise was a stronger predictor than public information regarding change in behavior and strategy adaption.
The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health : In vitro and ex vivo models
Describes in vitro and ex vivo models that can be employed to investigate effects of digested food products on the GIT, or specific components thereof. Many such models exist and include, for example, those used to study digestion and fermentation in the small and large intestine, to investigate absorption (e.g. Ussing chamber, epithelial cell systems), and to research the immune and enteroendocrine responses (e.g. macrophages, dendritic cells, co-cultures). In each case, these respective assays and models are discussed, and tips and tricks concerning their proper use are given. The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health: In Vitro and Ex Vivo Models is an asset to researchers wishing to study the health benefits of their foods and food bioactives of interest. The book highlights which in vitro/ex vivo assays are of greatest relevance to their goals, what sort of outputs/data can be generated, and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the various assays. It is also an important resource for under-graduate students in the ‘food and health’ arena.
The Impact of FDI on Economic Growth : An Analysis for the Transition Countries of Central and Eastern Europe
Provides a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between FDI and economic growth with special attention to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Within a new semi-endogenous growth model, the book illustrates the impact of FDI on economic growth for every stage of development of a country. Developing countries experience both strong capital accumulation and technology transfer through FDI, whereas highly developed countries mainly benefit from FDI as a vehicle of global technology diffusion.
The Impact of Environmental Variability on Ecological Systems
Brings together contributions from these three fronts to provide readers with a comprehensive look at the challenges for ecological systems and ecological research alike.

The Impact of Automatic Store Replenishment on Retail : Technologies and Concepts for the Out-of-Stocks Problem
Companies in the fast moving consumer goods industry increasingly look for technologies to improve customer satisfaction while reducing costs at the same time. A technology allowing to raise the availability of products on the retailers' shelves while providing cost reduction opportunities is automatic store replenishment (ASR). It is an intelligent software that automatically places inventory replenishment orders.
The IMO Compendium : A collection of problems suggested for the International Mathematical Olympiads, 1959-2004
The IMO has sparked off a burst of creativity among enthusiasts in creating new and interesting mathematics problems. In an extremely stiff competition, only six problems are chosen each year to appear on the IMO. The total number of problems proposed for the IMOs up to this point is staggering Until now it has been almost impossible to obtain a complete collection of the problems proposed at the IMO in book form. "The IMO Compendium" is the result of a two year long collaboration between four former IMO participants from Yugoslavia, now Serbia and Montenegro, to rescue these problems from old and scattered manuscripts, and produce the ultimate source of IMO practice problems.
The Immune Synapse as a Novel Target for Therapy
The immune synapse can be compared to a molecular machine that controls T cell activation when getting in contact with an antigen-presenting cell (APC). The immune synapse is involved in the transfer of information across the T cell–APC junction. It plays an essential role in the control and nature of the immune response. In recent years several approaches have been developed to reprogram the immune response by targeting molecules involved in the immune synapse. Monoclonal antibodies, such as those targeting the lymphocyte co-receptor, costimulatory and adhesion molecules (CD3, CD4, CD40L, CTLA4-Ig, LFA-1), or altered peptide ligands have been shown capable of inducing immune tolerance in transplantation, autoimmunity and allergy. This volume discusses the progress in the field, from basic science to clinical trials, and the major mechanisms involved. It is of interest to clinicians and researchers working in this area.
The Illusion of Risk Control : What Does it Take to Live With Uncertainty?
Managers and regulators need conceptual tools to help them develop risk management strategies, establish appropriate compromises and justify their decisions in such ambiguous settings. This series weaves together insights from multiple scientific disciplines that shed light on these problems, including organization studies, psychology, sociology, economics, law and engineering. It explores novel topics related to safety management, anticipating operational challenges in high-hazard industries and the societal concerns associated with these activities.
The Illusion of Linearity : From Analysis to Improvement
Based on both quantitative and qualitative research, "The Illusion of Linearity: From Analysis to Improvement" discusses the following issues: (1) how the illusion of linearity appears in diverse domains of mathematics and science and how it is conceptually related to other more general misconceptions identified in the research literature, (2) what are the crucial psychological, mathematical, and educational factors being responsible for the occurrence and persistence of the phenomenon, and (3) how the illusion of linearity can be remedied by appropriate instruction.
The Illusion of Certainty : Health Benefits and Risks
Peels away the "veneer of certainty" which many of us attach to health risk and benefit information given to us in our daily lives. It was written and designed primarily to assist the public in comprehending and interpreting the uncertainty associated with the overwhelming amount of information on medical and environmental health risks. The book uses unique, visual presentations and case studies to explain the benefits of medical screening tests (e.g., mammography, prostate and colorectal cancer screening, cholesterol screening) and drugs (e.g., statins, Vioxx™) and the risks associated with exposure to environmental contaminants (e.g., lead, dioxin, radon). This book will help patients and their families get more involved in making medical decisions.
