Scale-Space and Morphology in Computer Vision ; 3rd International Conference, Scale-Space 2001, Vancouver, Canada, July 7-8, 2001. Proceedings
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference on Scale-Space and Morphology in Computer Vision, Scale-Space 2001, held in Vancouver, Canada in July 2001. The 18 revised full papers presented together with 23 posters were carefully reviewed and selected from 60 submissions. The book addresses all current aspects of scale-space and morphology in the context of computer vision, in particular, vector distance functions, optic flow, image registration, curve evolution, morphological segmentation, scalar images, vector images, automatic scale selection, geometric diffusion, diffusion filtering, image filtering, inverse problems, active contours, etc.
Sampling Methods, Remote Sensing and GIS Multiresource Forest Inventory
The book presents the state-of-the-art of forest resources assessments and monitoring and provides links to practical applications of forest and natural resource assessment programs. It gives an overview of current forest inventory systems and discusses forest mensuration, sampling techniques, remote sensing applications, geographic and forest information systems, and multi-resource forest inventory. In addition to the assessment of the productive functions of forests, particular attention is given to the quantification of non-wood goods and services and the relationship of forests to other landscape elements. All methodology is presented in the framework of sustainable management of the multiple functions that forests provide to the natural environment and to society.
Root, Tuber and Banana Food System Innovations : Value Creation for Inclusive Outcomes
This book describes recent innovations in food systems based on root, tuber and banana crops in developing countries. These innovations respond to many of the challenges facing these vital crops, linked to their vegetative seed and bulky and perishable produce. Recently, there has been enormous practical interest in strategies for applying optimization tools to the development of robust solutions and designs in several areas, including aerodynamics, the integration of sensing and control, cooperative control with poorly modeled uncertainty, cascading failures in military and civilian applications, multi-mode seekers/sensor fusion, and data association problems and tracking systems. Robot navigation from nature : Simultaneous localisation, mapping, and path planning based on Hippocampal models
This book describes the development of a robot mapping and navigation system inspired by models of the neural mechanisms underlying spatial navigation in the rodent hippocampus. Computational models of animal navigation systems have traditionally had limited performance when implemented on robots. The aim of the work was to determine the extent to which hippocampal models can be used to provide a robot with functional mapping and navigation capabilities in real world environments. The focus of the research was on achieving practical robot performance, rather than maintaining biological plausibility.

This volume is an outcome of the REFT 2005 Workshop on Rigorous Engineering of Fault-Tolerant Systems held in conjunction with the Formal Methods 2005 conference at Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, in July 2005. This book provides new conceptualisations on the networks of migrants and their descendants in accessing the labour market. Although references to social networks are common in discussions of migration, simplified ideas of co-ethnic networks often obscure the reality, for example confounding ties with co-ethnics and ‘strong ties’. This book addresses key questions about the role of networks in migration contexts, particularly in relation to how migrants and their descendants, access the labour market and develop their employment trajectories over time. Rather than adopting a narrow essentializing ethnic lens, the research presented in this book explores intersectional identities of class, generation and gender.
Revenue Management with Flexible Products : Models and Methods for the Broadcasting Industry
Remarkable features of revenue management (RM) problems in the cargo, manufacturing and broadcasting industries are so-called flexible products. "Flexibility" means that the actual mode of production is not defined at the time of purchase, but can be chosen later on by the service provider. This book is among the first to analyze RM problems with flexible products and RM in broadcasting companies. The implications of flexibility are explicitly taken into account in the models and methods presented. As an aside, the book contains descriptions of algorithms to generate stochastic demand data streams for general RM problems. Six leading experts lecture on a wide spectrum of recent results on the subject of the title, providing both a solid reference and deep insights on current research activity. Michael Cowling presents a survey of various interactions between representation theory and harmonic analysis on semisimple groups and symmetric spaces. Alain Valette recalls the concept of amenability and shows how it is used in the proof of rigidity results for lattices of semisimple Lie groups. Edward Frenkel describes the geometric Langlands correspondence for complex algebraic curves, concentrating on the ramified case where a finite number of regular singular points is allowed. Masaki Kashiwara studies the relationship between the representation theory of real semisimple Lie groups and the geometry of the flag manifolds associated with the corresponding complex algebraic groups.

The book also contains an introduction to a programming method and system based on this model. The mathematical model, known as the "Fluent Calculus,'' describes how to use classical first-order logic to set up symbolic models of dynamic worlds and to represent knowledge of actions and their effects. The book covers the issues of reasoning about sensor input, acting under incomplete knowledge and uncertainty, planning, intelligent troubleshooting, and many other topics.
