Systèmes multi-èchelles : Modélisation et simulation = Multi-scale systems : Modeling and simulation

Multiscale Systems is an introduction to the problem of multiscale systems from the perspective of the applied mathematician. It consists of a mosaic of examples whose only link is belonging to the very large family of problems arising from physics in the broadest sense, which present, for their modeling and simulation, this essential difficulty of containing within them very different time or space scales.

Systematic Design for Emergence in Cellular Nonlinear Networks : With Applications in Natural Computing and Signal Processing

Cellular nonlinear networks are naturally inspired computing architectures where complex dynamic behaviors may emerge as a result of the local or prescribed connectivity among simple cells. Functionally, much like in biology, each cell is defined by a few bits of information called a gene. This book proposes a systematic framework for measuring emergence and a systematic design method to locate computationally meaningful genes in a reasonable computing time. Programs and application examples are provided so that the reader may easily understand the new concepts and develop her own specific experiments. An accessible language recommends it to a large audience including specialists from various interdisciplinary fields who may benefit from a better understanding of emergence and its applications to their specific field.

Symmetry : Cultural-historical and ontological aspects of science-arts relations The natural and man-made world in an interdisciplinary approach

Symmetry used to be a fundamental phenomenon in crystallography, where its basic concept was elaborated, in morphological biology, and of course in mathematics, which provided its exact description. In the last half century symmetry (and symmetry breaking) has become a leading principle in physics, in all sciences that deal with the structure of matter, as well as in the biochemistry of proteins, the study of the genetic code, brain research (where functional asymmetries have been revealed), psychology, and in developing architectural structures and in business decision-making, to name but a few examples. This book seeks to find common regularities among these apparently disparate phenomena. It covers most of the achievements reached in the sciences in recent decades that have been given new impetus by the mutual influences of art and science related to symmetry (or the lack of it).

Swarm Robotics ; 2nd SAB 2006 International Workshop, Rome, Italy, September 30-October 1, 2006 Revised Selected Papers

Swarm robotics is the study of how large numbers of relatively simple physically embodied agentscanbe designedsuchthat a desiredcollectivebehavioremerges from the local interactions among agents and between the agents and the en- ronment. Swarm robotics has emerged as a novel approach to the coordination of large numbers of robots and is inspired from observation of social insects – ants, termites, wasps and bees – which stand as fascinating examples of how a large number of simple individuals can interact to create collectively intelligent systems. Socialinsects areknownto coordinatetheir actionsto accomplishtasks that are far beyond the capabilities of a single individual: termites build large and complex mounds, army ants organize impressive foraging raids, ants can collectively carry large prey.

Sustainable landscape construction : A guide to green building outdoors ; 3rd ed.

Includes important recent developments in this landscape revolution. It remains essential reading for everyone with an interest in "green" design of outdoor spaces and infrastructures. Each chapter focuses on one overarching site goal, such as “Pave Less,” “Heal Injured Sites,” and “Consider Origin and Fate of Materials.” These principles of land sustainability are clearly articulated and developed through specific examples of more than 100 projects from around the world, reflecting both traditions and recent innovations. Expanded coverage of industry trends toward performance monitoring, and of lessons from project failures, form an important enhancement in this edition. New content also details the necessity to plan adaptively, not just preventively, for the realities of changing climate and intensifying weather.

Sustainability Accounting and Reporting

This is the best contributions on environmental management accounting (EMA) from around the world. It has been developed by the Environmental Management Accounting Network (EMAN). Contributions are drawn primarily from papers presented at EMAN-EU and EMAN-Asia Pacific conferences in the last two years. Brought together in this volume are international examples of leading thinking and practice in this rapidly developing area. The book discusses new developments in environmental accounting and investigates topics in and links between corporate environmental and sustainability issues as well as between strategy, measurement and information management, and between accounting and reporting.

Surveying Human Vulnerabilities across the Life Course

Details tools and procedures for data collections of hard-to-reach, hard-to-survey populations. Inside, readers will discover first-hand insights from experts who share their successes as well as their failures in their attempts to identify and measure human vulnerabilities across the life course. Coverage first provides an introduction on studying vulnerabilities based on the Total Error Survey framework. Next, the authors present concrete examples on how to survey such populations as the elderly, migrants, widows and widowers, couples facing breast cancer, employees and job seekers, displaced workers, and teenagers during their transition to adulthood. In addition, one essay discusses the rationale for the use of life history calendars in studying social and psychological vulnerability while another records the difficulty the authors faced when trying to set-up an online social network to collect relevant data.

Supramolecular Dye Chemistry

Dye chemistry was one of the initial topics of chemical research in the academicas well as industrial field. At the early stage of dye research, in the last decades ofthe 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the focus was on the elucidationof structures of natural dyes aiming at the development of their chemicalsyntheses and to establish theoretical concepts for the understanding of thecolor–constitution relationship as a prerequisite for the design of new artificialcolorants. The major outcome of these pioneering efforts for mankind was thatcolor is no more a privilege of nature and, hence, multi-colored paints enteredour everyday life and textiles of any desirable shade became accessible.Nowadays most colorants have the purpose to satisfy our aesthetical needsand, thus, thousands of dyes and pigments are produced on industrial scales.Nevertheless, nearly periodically new demands arise for so-called “functionaldyes” whoseπ-conjugated systems exhibit novel functionalities beyond aes-thetical purposes. Optical brighteners or near-infrared absorbers are exampleswhere even transparency in the visible spectrum is desired and dyes for non-linear optics, holographic optical data storage and two photon absorptionare further examples where the color properties of “dyes” are insignificantlyrelated to the functional demands. Each chapter begins with an outline, abstract, and set of key words and ends with a ‘forward look’ that provides suggestions for further studies in the field. In summary, this book complements earlier ones in the field pertaining to functional dyes in general and supramolecular assemblies specifically.

Super-Flexibility for Knowledge Enterprises : A Toolkit for Dynamic Adaption

Living with uncertainty is an everyday reality for most business entities today. This is especially the case for knowledge-intensive enterprises, such as those in technology, financial services, biotechnology and telecommunications, where new innovations and shifting customer preferences can radically change competitive dynamics. The focus of the book is on how knowledge enterprises can harness uncertainty by becoming super-flexible. Based on over 20 years of field research and practical experience in Silicon Valley’s technology ecosystem, the authors present conceptual frameworks, illustrative examples and practical lessons for strategizing, organizing and managing knowledge-based enterprises in turbulent settings.

Sturm-Liouville Theory and its Applications

Undergraduate textbooks on Fourier series which follow a pointwise approach to convergence miss the rich geometric content which comes with treating the subject within the inner product space L2. This book, developed from a course taught to senior undergraduates, provides a unified introduction to Fourier analysis and special functions based on the Sturm-Liouville theory in L2. The basic results of this theory, namely the orthogonality and completeness of its eigenfunctions, are established in Chapter 2; the remaining chapters present examples and applications. The last two chapters, on Fourier and Laplace transformations, while not part of the Sturm-Liouville theory, extend the Fourier series method for representing functions to integral representations.
