Applied Stochastic Control of Jump Diffusions
The main purpose of the book is to give a rigorous, yet mostly nontechnical, introduction to the most important and useful solution methods of various types of stochastic control problems for jump diffusionsThe types of control problems covered include classical stochastic control, optimal stopping, impulse control and singular control. Both the dynamic programming method and the maximum principle method are discussed, as well as the relation between them. Corresponding verification theorems involving the Hamilton-Jacobi Bellman equation and/or (quasi-)variational inequalities are formulated. There are also chapters on the viscosity solution formulation and numerical methods.The text emphasises applications, mostly to finance. All the main results are illustrated by examples and exercises appear at the end of each chapter with complete solutions. This will help the reader understand the theory and see how to apply it.The book assumes some basic knowledge of stochastic analysis, measure theory and partial differential equations.
Applied Parallel Computing ; State of the Art in Scientific Computing
Introduction The PARA workshops in the past were devoted to parallel computing methods in science and technology. There have been seven PARA meetings to date: PARA’94, PARA’95 and PARA’96 in Lyngby, Denmark, PARA’98 in Umea, ? Sweden, PARA 2000 in Bergen, N- way, PARA 2002 in Espoo, Finland, and PARA 2004 again in Lyngby, Denmark. The ?rst six meetings featured lectures in modern numerical algorithms, computer science, en- neering, and industrial applications, all in the context of scienti?c parallel computing. This meeting in the series, the PARA 2004 Workshop with the title “State of the Art in Scienti?c Computing.

PARA 2002 was held inEspoo, Finland, June 15–18, 2002, and hosted by CSC, the Finnish informationtechnology center for science. The general theme of the conference was advancedscientific computing.The conference demonstrated the ability of advanced scientific computing tosolve real-world problems, and highlighted methods, instruments, and trends infuture scientific computing. The conference began with a one-day tutorial sessionon Grid programming.The conference focused on an application-oriented, multi-disciplinary, andmulti-scale approach. A wide variety of scientific computing applications wereintroduced, from semiconductor processing and behavior of the human body tooceanic and atmospheric phenomena.

Starting with exercises in functional analysis and approximation theory, the text develops problems related to the numerical resolution of elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic partial differential equations, scalar or vector, in one or more spatial dimensions. Pure diffusion and pure convection problems are therefore addressed, alongside diffusion-transport problems and problems in compressible and incompressible fluid dynamics. Particular emphasis is given to the finite element method for the spatial discretization of the problems considered, although exercises on the finite difference and finite volume methods are also included.

Application of numerical methods in engineering problems using MATLAB
Presents an analysis of structures using numerical methods and mathematical modeling. This structural analysis also includes beam, plate, and pipe elements, and examines deflection and frequency or buckling loads. The various engineering theories of beams/plates/shells are comprehensively presented, and the relationships between stress and strain, and the governing equations of the structure are extracted. To solve governing equations with numerical methods, there are two general types, including methods based on derivatives or integrals. Derivative-based methods have the advantage of flexibility in modeling boundary conditions, low analysis time, and a very high degree of accuracy.

Analyzing uncertainty in civil engineering
This volume addresses the issue of uncertainty in civil engineering from design to construction. Failures do occur in practice. Attributing them to a residual system risk or a faulty execution of the project does not properly cover the range of causes. A closer scrutiny of the adopted design, the engineering model, the data, the soil-construction-interaction and the model assumptions is required. Usually, the uncertainties in initial and boundary conditions are abundant. Current engineering practice often leaves these issues aside, despite the fact that new scientific tools have been developed in the past decades that allow a rational description of uncertainties of all kinds, from model uncertainty to data uncertainty. It is the aim of this volume to have a critical look at current engineering risk concepts in order to raise awareness of uncertainty in numerical computations, shortcomings of a strictly probabilistic safety concept, geotechnical models of failure mechanisms and their implications for construction management, execution, and the juristic question of responsibility. In addition, a number of the new procedures for modelling uncertainty are explained.
