Relativistic Collisions of Structured Atomic Particles

Rehabilitation in the dynamic stabilization of the lumbosacral spine

Until recently in the field of vertebral surgery, many diseases were managed with surgery of instrumented vertebral stabilization and bone fusion (arthrodesis). Fusion always offered valid and safe results, although at the expense of the abolition of the motility of the spine section which was being operated upon For this reason, when treating degenerative diseases of the lumbosacral spine, the Orthopaedic Clinic of the S. Chiara Hospital in Pisa, introduced the Dynesys® lumbosacral spine dynamic neutralization system to treat patients and spinal diseases with selected indications. Dynesys is a non-fusion elastic system with transpedicular screws and a flexible connector for dynamic stabilization. This is a new method for treating the degenerative disease of the lumbosacral spine which preserves motility at the treated levels. While allowing for movement of the segment at all levels, the Dynesys provides stability to the functional unit, which attains a condition of physiological function compared with the rigid stabilization-arthrodesis.

Regulatory T Cells in Inflammation

Regulatory T-cells are essential components of the immune system, and several different subsets of regulatory T-cells have been described. Considerable regulatory function has been attributed to the CD4+CD25+ T-cell subset. These cells act by suppressing adaptive and possibly innate immune responses thereby maintaining or restoring the balance between immunity and tolerance. The suppressive effects of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T-cells are cell-contact dependent. Recent developments and viewpoints in the field of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T-cells as well as the potential use of regulatory T-cells in immunotherapy of inflammatory diseases are discussed in this volume. Research in the field of gene regulation is evolving rapidly in an ever-changing scientific environment. Microarray techniques and comparative genomics have enabled more comprehensive studies of regulatory genomics and are proving to be powerful tools of discovery. The application of chromatin immunoprecipitation and microarrays (chIP-on-chip) to directly study the genomic binding locations of transcription factors has enabled more comprehensive modeling of regulatory networks. In addition, complete genome sequences and the comparison of numerous related species has demonstrated that conservation in non-coding DNA sequences often provides evidence for cis-regulatory binding sites. Regional Climate Variability and its Impacts in The Mediterranean Area

Global change due to natural processes and anthropogenic activity as well as the natural variability of the climate system will impact all areas of the globe. However, the impact will not be uniform and different impacts of differing magnitude and nature will be felt in various regions of the globe. The Mediterranean region, like other regions of the world, will face some unique and different impacts. This NATO workshop was set up to discuss these issues in general, and the influence of chemical emissions and transformation in particular. This workshop was "special" because it involved a very large number of scientists (>75%) from the region, either from North Africa or the Mediterranean Europe. Many key issues, some of which are specific to this region, were identified. Details of the finding and suggestions are presented in the articles in this volume.

Redox Systems Under Nano-Space Control

The generation of novel redox systems under nano-space control is one of the most exciting fields in present organic, inorganic, and supramolecular chemistry. The authors have drawn together the newest information on the construction of such novel redox systems using nano-space control of complexation or molecular chain-induced spaces and metal- or self-assembled spaces through combining techniques in coordination, supramolecular, and bio-inspired chemistry. Such design on the nano level produces hybrid conjugated systems composed of transition and synthetic metals, metallohosts, redox-active self-assembled monolayers of helical peptides, DNA-directed metal arrays, photoactive antibody systems, chiral rotaxanes, and redox-active imprinted polymers. In the future, these systems will be the basis for novel selective electron-transfer reactions as well as new functional materials and catalysts.

Rediscovering Phenomenology : Phenomenological Essays on Mathematical Beings, Physical Reality, Perception and Consciousness

The purpose of this book is to show that Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology, if properly re-examined, provides the required framework for such an epistemology. This re-examination is both critical and constructive. (i) The absolute subjectivization or the full naturalization of consciousness must be rejected. (ii) The necessarily transcendental character of phenomenology is put to work in the search for a systematic connection between the modes of theoretical objectivation and the apprehension of the phenomenal world by intentional consciousness. A new look at some of the fundamental issues opened up by Husserl is thus suggested by recent advances in the theory of perception, attention, and the will; foundations of mathematics and formal logic; space-time or quantum physics.
