Vertebrate Hair Cells' provides a current overview of the mechanosensory receptor cells of the vertebrate inner ear. Each chapter is written by experimentalists active in exploring a particular aspect of hair cell function, including development, mechanoelectrical transduction, and synaptic transmission. Hair cell research has entered an exciting phase in which the convergence of molecular/genetic and biophysical methods is stimulating a rapid expansion in our understanding of function. Venture capitalists (VCs) fund ventures with the aim of reaping a capital gain upon exit. Research has identified information asymmetry between inside investors and follow-on investors as a major source of friction. It is thus in the interest of VCs to reduce information asymmetry at exit.
Venture Capital, Corporate Governance, and Firm Value
Based on economic and managerial theories, Maik Kleinschmidt studies the relationship between venture capital, corporate governance, and firm value. He explores the determinants of venture capitalists’ influence as well as their impact on the corporate governance of portfolio companies. In a second step, he analyses the influence of corporate governance on the companies’ firm value. His findings support the hypothesis that venture capitalists improve the corporate governance of their portfolio companies and that their abilities determine their impact. Moreover, they show the positive impact of good corporate governance on some measures for firm value.

Moreover, as the mechanisms of the condition have been elucidated, it has become clear that much work needs to be done in the field to achieve acceptable results in this country. At the most recent symposium, in Sendai, the epidemiology and the treatment of pulmonary thromboembolism, traveler's thrombosis, and the prevention of deep vein thromboembolism were discussed, particularly with reference to the differences between Japan and Western countries. The fruits of the collaboration between that assembly of international specialists can be found in this collection of work. It provides an in-depth look at the current concepts that guide the treatment and prevention of the disease, and at the problem areas that must be improved upon.

Variational and Quasi-Variational Inequalities in Mechanics
The variational method is a powerful tool to investigate states and processes in technical devices, nature, living organisms, systems, and economics. The power of the variational method consists in the fact that many of its sta- ments are physical or natural laws themselves. The essence of the variational approach for the solution of problems rel- ing to the determination of the real state of systems or processes consists in the comparison of close states. The selection criteria for the actual statesmust be such that all the equations and conditions of the mathematical model are satis?ed. Historically, the first variational theory was the Lagrange theory created to investigate the equilibrium of finite-dimensional mechanical systems under holonomic bilateral constraints (bonds). The selection criterion proposed by Lagrange is the admissible displacement principle.

Engineers and scientists often need to sell an innovative idea for a new product or a new product improvement to top management. Sometimes their tendency is to focus on the "WOW!" of the new technology at the expense of making a convincing business case.
