Meaning and Use

The second Jerusalem Philosophical Encounter was held in Jerusalem on April 25-28, 1976, The topic of the symposiumwas Meaning and Use. For Bar-Hillel, the question 'meaning or use?' was of great importance, one which he took as a question of priorities. Which approach to natural language is prior: the formal, semantical approach, which accords a central position to the truth functional concept of meaning and to the theory of reference, or rather the alternative approach which accords the central position to linguistic commu nication and prefers dealing with speech acts to dealing with Statements? Bar Hillel's answer to this question, in his later years, can be summed up by our title, meaning and use: neither approach deserves priority, each is equally necessary, and they both complement each other.

Meaning and Language : Phenomenological Perspectives

This book is the first anthology to provide a wide-ranging picture of how phenomenology relates to language. It contains both in-depth studies on new aspects of language in Husserl’s thought as well as original phenomenological research that explores the respective potentials and limits of linguistic expression and conceptualization.

Several classical theorems are presented along with some very recent results. In particular, the text includes a product-space extension of the Rising Sun lemma, a product-space version of the John-Nirenberg inequality for  bounded mean oscillation (BMO) functions with sharp exponent, a refinement of the Gurov-Reshetnyak lemma, sharp embedding theorems for Muckenhoupt, Gurov-Reshetnyak, reverse Hölder, and Gehring classes, etc. This volume is interesting for graduate students and mathematicians involved with these topics.

Max-Plus Linear Stochastic Systems and Perturbation Analysis

This book provides a thorough treatment of the theory of stochastic max-plus linear systems. Max-plus algebra is an algebraic approach to discrete event systems (DES), like queuing networks that are prone to synchronization. Perturbation analysis studies the sensitivity of the performance of DES with respect to changes in a particular system parameter.

Maxillofacial prosthetics and dental oncology : Practical approach from a high volume head and neck cancer centre

An assimilation of clinical and practical work done at Tata Memorial Hospital. It reflects the evolution of Dental Oncology and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics and more than 33 years of exclusive maxillofacial prosthodontic experience of Dr. Kanchan Dholam. This book covers the clinical guidelines for treatment, based on sound scientific principles and published literature. It also provides a step-by-step approach in the fabrication of commonly-indicated maxillofacial prostheses.

Maxillofacial Imaging

Demonstrates how advanced medical imaging techniques can be successfully applied to dental and maxillofacial conditions. There is a focus on CT and MRI, but the use of all contemporary imaging techniques are illustrated including PET, PET/CT, ultrasonography, and cone beam CT. The presentation is in atlas style, with succinct, bulleted text and a wealth of high-quality images in multiple planes. All images for each patient are grouped to enable the reader very quickly to gain an imaging overview of the condition under consideration. After a comprehensive introductory chapter on normal imaging anatomy, the role of advanced imaging techniques is described in pathologic conditions of the mandible and maxilla, temporomandibular joint, regions closely related to the jaw, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, salivary glands, and structures adjacent to the maxillofacial region. A concluding chapter examines the use of interventional procedures for diagnosis and treatment of maxillofacial conditions. Compared with the first edition, numerous additional cases have been incorporated and a completely new chapter focuses on cone beam CT.

Matrix Algebra From a Statistician`s Perspective

This book presents matrix algebra in a way that is well-suited for those with an interest in statistics or a related discipline. It provides thorough and unified coverage of the fundamental concepts along with the specialized topics encountered in areas of statistics such as linear statistical models and multivariate analysis. It includes a number of very useful results that have only been available from relatively obscure sources. Detailed proofs are provided for all results. The style and level of presentation are designed to make the contents accessible to a broad audience. The book is essentially self-contained, though it is best-suited for a reader who has had some previous exposure to matrices (of the kind that might be acquired in a beginning course on linear or matrix algebra).

Mathematics of Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Flows

Large eddy simulation (LES) is a method of scientific computation seeking to predict the dynamics of organized structures in turbulent flows by approximating local, spatial averages of the flow. This book focuses on the mathematical foundations of LES and its models and provides a connection between the powerful tools of applied mathematics, partial differential equations and LES. Thus, it is concerned with fundamental aspects not treated so deeply in the other books in the field, aspects such as well-posedness of the models, their energy balance and the connection to the Leray theory of weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.

Mathematics of Financial Markets

This book presents the mathematics that underpins pricing models for derivative securities, such as options, futures and swaps, in modern financial markets. The idealized continuous-time models built upon the famous Black-Scholes theory require sophisticated mathematical tools drawn from modern stochastic calculus. However, many of the underlying ideas can be explained more simply within a discrete-time framework. This is developed extensively in this substantially revised second edition to motivate the technically more demanding continuous-time theory, which includes a detailed analysis of the Black-Scholes model and its generalizations, American put options, term structure models and consumption-investment problems. The mathematics of martingales and stochastic calculus is developed where it is needed.

Mathematics for enzyme reaction kinetics and Reactor performance ; 2 Volumes set

The second volume begins with an introduction to basic concepts in calculus, i.e. limits, derivatives, integrals and differential equations; limits, along with continuity, are further expanded afterwards, covering uni- and multivariate cases, as well as classical theorems. After recovering the concept of differential and applying it to generate (regular and partial) derivatives, the most important rules of differentiation of functions, in explicit, implicit and parametric form, are retrieved – together with the nuclear theorems supporting simpler manipulation thereof. The book then tackles strategies to optimize uni- and multivariate functions, before addressing integrals in both indefinite and definite forms.

Mathematics and Politics : Strategy, Voting, Power and Proof

Mathematics and Politics requires no prerequisites in either subject. The underlying philosophy involves minimizing algebraic computations while focusing on the conceptual aspects of mathematics in the context of real-world questions in political science. This new addition has an added co-author, Allison Pacelli, and covers six major topics: social choice, yes-no voting systems, political power, game-theoretic models of international conflict, fairness, and escalation. In addition to having two new chapters (treating apportionment and conflict resolution), the text has been extensively reorganized and the number of exercises increased to over 300.
