CyberParks – The Interface Between People, Places and Technology: New Approaches and Perspectives
This book is about public open spaces, about people, and about the relationship between them and the role of technology in this relationship. It is about different approaches, methods, empirical studies, and concerns about a phenomenon that is increasingly being in the centre of sciences and strategies – the penetration of digital technologies in the urban space. As the main outcome of the CyberParks Project, this book aims at fostering the understanding about the current and future interactions of the nexus people, public spaces and technology. It addresses a wide range of challenges and multidisciplinary perspectives on emerging phenomena related to the penetration of technology in people’s lifestyles - affecting therefore the whole society, and with this, the production and use of public spaces. Cyberparks coined the term cyberpark to describe the mediated public space, that emerging type of urban spaces where nature and cybertechnologies blend together to generate hybrid experiences and enhance quality of life.

This volume contains the final proceedings for the 2004 Computer Music Model-ing and Retrieval Symposium (CMMR 2004). CMMR is an annualevent focusing on important aspects of computer music. CMMR 2004 provided aunique opportunity to meet and interact with peers concerned with the cross-influence of the technological and creative in computer music. Cognitive Supervision for Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Laser Surgery
This thesis lays the groundwork for the automatic supervision of the laser incision process, which aims to complement surgeons’ perception of the state of tissues and enhance their control over laser incisions. The research problem is formulated as the estimation of variables that are representative of the state of tissues during laser cutting. Prior research in this area leveraged numerical computation methods that bear a high computational cost and are not straightforward to use in a surgical setting. This book proposes a novel solution to this problem, using models inspired by the ability of experienced surgeons to perform precise and clean laser cutting. It shows that these new models, which were extracted from experimental data using statistical learning techniques, are straightforward to use in a surgical setup, allowing greater precision in laser-based surgical procedures.

Map-based Mobile Services : Design, Interaction and Usability
It addresses methods and techniques for topics that range from design and rendering, context modelling, personalisation, multimodal interaction to usability test. Instead of striving for a seamless coverage of all essential theoretical and technical issues with an equal depth and extent, we attempt to pinpoint a number of research highlights and representative development activities at universities, research institutions and so- ware industry. The operational prototypes and platforms reported in the book are on the one hand outcome and feasibility proof of various approaches. On the other hand, they serve as a new starting point for the refinement of user interfaces and iterative usability tests.

The 12 revised full papers and 15 revised poster papers presented together with 5 papers of a special session on user requirements and evaluation of multimodal meeting browsers/assistants were carefully reviewed and selected from 47 submissions. The papers cover a wide range of topics related to human-human communication modeling and processing, as well as to human-computer interaction, using several communication modalities. Special focus is given to the analysis of non-verbal communication cues and social signal processing, the analysis of communicative content, audio-visual scene analysis, speech processing, interactive systems and applications.

The KES conference series has been established for almost a decade, and it cont- ues each year to attract participants from all geographical areas of the world, including Europe, the Americas, Australasia and the Paci?c Rim. The KES conferences cover a wide range of intelligent systems topics. The broad focus of the conference series is the theory and applications of intelligent systems. From a pure research ?eld, intel- gent systems have advanced to the point where their abilities have been incorporated into many business and engineering application areas. KES 2005 provided a valuable mechanism for delegates to obtain an extensive view of the latest research into a range of intelligent-systems algorithms, tools and techniques. This is a special KES conference, as it is the 10th in the series, and as such, it represents an occasion for celebration and an opportunity for reflection. The first KES conference was held in 1997 and was organised by the KES conference founder, Lakhmi Jain. In 1997, 1998 and 1999 the KES conferences were held in Adelaide, Australia.
