Interface Oral Health Science 2007 ; Proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium for Interface Oral Health Science, Held in Sendai, Japan, Between 18 and 19 February, 2007
Interface Oral Health Science is a major theme for next-generation dental research. That theme is based on the innovative concept that healthy oral function is provided by biological and biomechanical harmony among three systems: oral tissues including the teeth, mucosa, bones, and muscles (host); parasitic microorganisms of the oral cavity (parasites); and biomaterials. The concept posits that oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and tempo- mandibular disorders should be interpreted as interface diseases that result from disruption of the intact interfaces among these systems. The uniqueness of this concept rests on the fact that it not only encompasses the entire fi eld of dentistry and dental care, but also expands the common ground shared with many other fields, including medicine, pharmaceutical science, agriculture, material science, and engineering.

The nineteenth biennial International Conference on Information Processing in Medical Imaging (IPMI) was held July 11–15, 2005 in Glenwood Springs, CO, USA on the Spring Valley campus of the Colorado Mountain College. Following the successful meeting in beautiful Ambleside in England, this year’s conference addressed important recent developments in a broad range of topics related to the acquisition, analysis and application of biomedical images. Interest in IPMI has been steadily growing over the last decade. This is p- tially due to the increased number of researchers entering the ?eld of medical imagingasaresultoftheWhitakerFoundationandtherecentlyformedNational Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. This year, there were 245 full manuscripts submitted to the conference which was twice the number s- mitted in 2003 and almost four times the number of submissions in 2001. Of these papers, 27 were accepted as oral presentations, and 36 excellent subm- sions that could not be accommodated as oral presentations were presented as posters. Selection of the papers for presentation was a di?cult task as we were unable to accommodate many of the excellent papers submitted this year. All accepted manuscripts were allocated 12 pages in these proceedings.

Imaging in Treatment Planning for Sinonasal Diseases

This is an original approach and reflects the constant team effort at the editors' institute over the past 15 years to integrate clinical and radiological information with the aim of establishing the most appropriate treatment. Special emphasis is placed on the identification of clinical and imaging data that allow selection of an endonasal or an external approach in surgical candidates. The value of planning an integrated endoscopic and radiological follow-up in the different diseases is also thoroughly reviewed. Through the correlation of imaging with endoscopic or clinical findings, this book will enable radiologists to familiarise themselves with the "otorhinolaryngological world" and clinicians to understand more fully the significance of specific radiological findings. It will serve as an invaluable guide to the selection of imaging techniques.

But while the ?eld of HCI brings individuals with many background disciplines together to discuss a common goal - the development of useful, usable, satisfying systems - the form of the collaboration remains unclear.
