Ubiquitous and Pervasive Commerce : New Frontiers for Electronic Business

Brings together the technological and business aspects of conducting commerce using ubiquitous and pervasive computing techniques, and also examines its implications for society at large. Individual chapters review the core technologies that make ubiquitous computing possible, the business standards that must be established to support the envisioned global infrastructures, and the applications that can be built today. They also examine business cases where investment in this technology is appropriate, as well as the economics mechanisms that must be designed for the effective use of such systems. Last but not least, the implications of ubiquitous and pervasive commerce for the legal system, employees and retailers, and the protection of the privacy of the general public are discussed.

Text, speech and dialogue ; Vol.3658 ; 8th International Conference, TSD 2005, Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, September 12-15, 2005, Proceedings

This year’s conference was partially oriented to wards multi-modal human-computer interaction (HCI), which can be seen as the most attractive topic of HCI at the present time. In this way, we are involved in a rich complex of communicative activity, facial expressions, hand gestures, direction of gaze, to name but the most obvious ones. The interpretationof each user utterancedependson the context, prosody, facial expressions (e. g. brows raised, brows and gaze both raised) and gestures. Hearers have to adapt to the speaker (e. g. maintainingthe theme of the conversation, smiling etc. ). Research into the interaction of these channels is however limited, often focusing on the interaction between a pair of channels.

Technologies for Interactive Digital Storytelling and Entertainment ; 3rd International Conference, TIDSE 2006, Darmstadt, Germany, December 4-6, 2006, Proceedings

Contains the proceedings from the 3rd International Conference on Technologies for Interactive Digital Storytelling and Entertainment (TIDSE 2006). The contributions are grouped into six sections, which include subjects like virtual characters, story authoring, narrative systems, and examples of their application. During recent years, Interactive Digital Storytelling has evolved as a prospering - search topic, banding together formerly disjoined disciplines stemming from the arts and humanities as well as computer science. The subject of this book is of course strongly related to the notion of ‘storytelling’, which has been used as an effective means for the communication of knowledge and social values, ever since the early history of humankind. It also tries to build a bridge between current academic trends.

Task Models and Diagrams for Users Interface Design ; 5th International Workshop, TAMODIA 2006, Hasselt, Belgium, October 23-24, 2006. Revised Papers

The first workshopaimed at examining how multiple forms of task expressionscan sign- icantly increase or decrease the quality of user interface design. This is still the scope of the current edition; we tried to assemble papers that discuss how the complexity of HCI design and development can be managed with tasks, models and diagrams. Much like the previous editions, the selection of papers from the 2006 edition re?ects the broad scope of this ?eld, which cannot be labeled with a single title or term. The invited paper is by Jo¨ elle Coutaz and discusses meta-user interfaces for ambient spaces. Finding appropriate ways to design and develop user interfaces for interactive spaces is becoming an important challenge for the creation of future usable applications.

Symbiotic interaction ; 5th International workshop, Symbiotic 2016, Padua, Italy, September 29–30, 2016, revised selected papers

The 12 full papers and 3 short papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 23 submissions. The idea of symbiotic systems put forward in this workshop capitalizes on the computers’ ability to implicitly detect the users goals, preferences or/and psycho-physiological states and thereby enhancing human-computer interaction (HCI). The papers present an overview of the symbiotic relationships between humans and computers with emphasis on user-driven research on symbiotic systems, adaptive systems, implicit input data, physiological computing and BCI, but also on understanding the nature of the interdependence and agency between computers and humans more broadly.

Structure for Dependability : Computer-Based Systems from an Interdisciplinary Perspective

Breaks new ground by presenting an interdisciplinary approach to a crucial problem – system dependability. Computer-based systems include hardware, software and people. Achieving dependability for such systems requires an interdisciplinary approach. In Structure for Dependability: Computer-Based Systems from an Interdisciplinary Perspective, computer scientists, sociologists, statisticians and psychologists bring together their latest research on the structure of dependable computer-based systems. The result is a highly readable overview of ways to achieve dependability in large computer-based systems with practical advice on designing dependable systems. This book is one of the outcomes of a six year Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration. Topics covered include fault tolerance, system evolution, determining software specifications, HCI, architecture, certification, dependability arguments, organisations, diagrams, time and procedures.
