The Origins of Language : Unraveling Evolutionary Forces

Developments in cognitive science indicate that human and nonhuman primates share a range of behavioral and physiological characteristics that speak to the issue of language origins. This volume has three major themes, woven throughout the chapters. First, it is argued that scientists in animal behavior and anthropology need to move beyond theoretical debate to a more empirically focused and comparative approach to language. Second, those empirical and comparative methods are described, revealing underpinnings of language, some of which are shared by humans and other primates and others of which are unique to humans. New insights are discussed, and several hypotheses emerge concerning the evolutionary forces that led to the "design" of language. Third, evolutionary challenges that led to adaptive changes in communication over time are considered with an eye toward understanding various constraints that channeled the process.

An intellectual history of the ‘New Haven School’, a school of legal theory and practice associated with Yale Law School in the city of New Haven. New Haven School ‘policy-oriented jurisprudence’—so-called for its emphasis on using law to pursue acknowledged policy aims—was developed from the 1940s by Harold Lasswell, a central figure of twentieth-century American political science, and Myres McDougal, a prominent international lawyer. The book argues that the New Haven School style of argument was representative of mid-century American international law.

The Machines of Leonardo Da Vinci and Franz Reuleaux : Kinematics of Machines from the Renaissance to the 20th Century

This book is about the evolution of these machines and the inv- tors and engineers who created them from the early Renaissance to the early 20th century. I have chosen two personalities who are icons of these two machine ages, Leonardo da Vinci [1452–1519] and Franz Reuleaux [1829– 1905], recognizing both the cadre of machine designers who in?uenced them as well as those who were in?uenced by the accomplishments of these two engineers. A major thesis of this book is that the evolution of machine design methodology, from the intuitive methods of the workshop to the math-based, engineering science analysis and synthesis of modern industrial design, was of equal achievement as the creation of the marvelous machines themselves. In the past two decades there has been increasing interest in rational me- ods of design from topology and optimization theories to genetic algorithms. In the teaching of design at the novitiate level, the importance of design - cles and iteration is emphasized. Yet often the historical background for e- lution of machine design is minimal or missing.

The Local Langlands Conjecture for GL(2)

If F is a non-Archimedean local field, local class field theory can be viewed as giving a canonical bijection between the characters of the multiplicative group GL(1,F) of F and the characters of the Weil group of F. If n is a positive integer, the n-dimensional analogue of a character of the multiplicative group of F is an irreducible smooth representation of the general linear group GL(n,F). The local Langlands Conjecture for GL(n) postulates the existence of a canonical bijection between such objects and n-dimensional representations of the Weil group, generalizing class field theory. This conjecture has now been proved for all F and n, but the arguments are long and rely on many deep ideas and techniques. This book gives a complete and self-contained proof of the Langlands conjecture in the case n=2. It is aimed at graduate students and at researchers in related fields. It presupposes no special knowledge beyond the beginnings of the representation theory of finite groups and the structure theory of local fields. It uses only local methods, with no appeal to harmonic analysis on adele groups.

The J-matrix Method : Developments and Selected Applications

Aims to provide the fundamental knowledge to appreciate the advantages of the J-matrix method and to encourage its use and further development. The J-matrix method is an algebraic method of quantum scattering with substantial success in atomic and nuclear physics. The accuracy and convergence property of the method compares favourably with other successful scattering calculation methods. Despite its thirty-year long history new applications are being found for the J-matrix method. This book gives a brief account of the recent developments and some selected applications of the method in atomic and nuclear physics.

The Interstellar Medium

Describing interstellar matter in our galaxy in all of its various forms, this book also considers the physical and chemical processes that are occurring within this matter. The first seven chapters present the various components making up the interstellar matter and detail the ways that we are able to study them. The following seven chapters are devoted to the physical, chemical and dynamical processes that control the behaviour of interstellar matter. These include the instabilities and cloud collapse processes that lead to the formation of stars. The last chapter summarizes the transformations that can occur between the different phases of the interstellar medium.
