Quantum dots : A doorway to nanoscale pPhysics

Devoted to an introduction to some of these fascinating aspects, addressing in particular graduate students and young researchers in the field. In the first lecture by R. Shankar the general theoretical aspects of Fermi liquids are addressed, in particular the renormalization group approach. This is then aptly applied to large quantum dots. A completely different approach is encountered in the second contribution by J.M. Elzerman et al. in that it is a thorough experimental expose of what can be done or expected in the study of small quantum dots. Here the emphasis lies on the electron spin to be used as a qubit. In the third lecture series, by M. Pustilnik and Leonid I. Glazman mechanisms of low-temperature electronic transport through a quantum dot -- weakly coupled to two conducting leads -- are reviewed. The fourth series of lectures by C.W.J. Beenakker deals with a very interesting aspect of nanophysics: a peculiar property of superconducting mirrors discovered by Andreev about forty years ago and still a challenge to experimental physicists.

Psychrophiles : From Biodiversity to Biotechnology

Of the current studies on extremophiles, approximately 30,000 articles by the year 2007, almost two-thirds have been performed on organisms adapted to outstanding temperatures, but much more attention has been paid to thermophiles than to psychrophiles. However, over the past 10 years, scientific publications on cold-adapted microorganisms have increased by a factor of ten. These microorganisms have evolved a number of strategies to thrive success-fully in cold habitats where they play key roles in nutrient cycling, such as nitrogen fixation, nitrification and denitrification, photosynthesis, sulfur oxidation and reduction, methanogenesis, and transformation of organic compounds. This book is focused on psychrophiles and describes, at the edge of knowledge, representative groups of cold-adapted microorganisms as well as the habitats in which they live and their strategies to cope with the cold.

Progress in Galois Theory ; Proceedings of John Thompson's 70th Birthday Conference

A recent trend in the field of Galois theory is to tie the previous theory of curve coverings (mostly of the Riemann sphere) and Hurwitz spaces (moduli spaces for such covers) with the theory of algebraic curves and their moduli spaces. A general survey of this is given in the article by Voelklein. Programming languages and systems

Notions of computation can be modelled by monads. Algebraic effects offer a characterization of monads in terms of algebraic operations and equational axioms, where operations are basic programming features, such as reading or updating the state, and axioms specify observably equivalent expressions. However, many useful programming features depend on additional mechanisms such as delimited scopes or dynamically allocated resources. Such mechanisms can be supported via extensions to algebraic effects including scoped effects and parameterized algebraic theories.
