Artificial gravity

"This book reviews the principle and rationale for using artificial gravity during space missions, and describes the current options proposed, including a short-radius centrifuge contained within a spacecraft. In Artificial Gravity, experts provide recommendations on the research needed to assess whether or not short-radius centrifuge workouts can help limit deconditioning of physiological systems.""Aided by an exquisite group of experts, Gilles Clement and Angie Bukley have managed to put together THE new, comprehensive reference book on artificial gravity. This book will be an essential resource for students, scientists, and program planners alike."

Applied Remote Sensing for Urban Planning, Governance and Sustainability

Despite the promising and exciting possibilities presented by new and fast-developing remote sensing technologies applied to urban areas, there is still a gap perceived between the generally academic and research-focused spectrum of results offered by the “urban remote sensing” community and the application of these data and products by the local governmental bodies of urban cities and regions. While there is no end of interesting science questions that we can ask about cities, sometimes these questions don't match well with what the operational problems and concerns of a given city are. The authors present data from six urban regions from all over the world. They explain what the important questions are, and how one can use data and scientific skills to help answer them.

Alpine Industrial Landscapes : Towards a New Approach for Brownfield Redevelopment in Mountain Regions

This book presents a pioneering research on brownfield redevelopment in mountain regions, and specifically in the European Alps. The origins and causes, the actual conditions as well as the future challenges and potentials of mountain brownfields are investigated from an interdisciplinary yet landscape-centered perspective. Through the reasoned combination of research-by-design methods and case-study analysis, the book explores the infrastructural relevance of these sites for the specific mountain territory, while advancing an innovative structuralist-systemic approach for their physical and functional transformation. The book includes, among others, a first transnational geo-mapping of Alpine brownfields, whose impressive outcomes in terms of site numbers and distribution can only confirm the urgency of this research.

Algorithmic Foundations of Robotics VI

Robot algorithms are abstractions of computational processes that control or reason about motion and perception in the physical world. Because actions in the physical world are subject to physical laws and geometric constraints, the design and analysis of robot algorithms raises a unique combination of questions in control theory, computational and differential geometry, and computer science. Algorithms serve as a unifying theme in the multi-disciplinary field of robotics. This volume consists of selected contributions to the sixth Workshop on the Algorithmic Foundations of Robotics. This is a highly competitive meeting of experts in the field of algorithmic issues related to robotics and automation.

African Languages and Literatures in the 21st Century

Examines the crucial role still played by African languages in pedagogy and literatures in the 21st century, generating insights into how they effectively serve cultural needs across the African continent and beyond. Boldly positioning African languages as key resources in the 21st century, chapters focus on themes such as language revolt by marginalized groups at grassroots level, the experience of American students learning African languages, female empowerment through the use of African languages in music, film and literary works, and immigration issues. The contributions are written by scholars of language, literature, education and linguistics, and will be of interest to students and scholars in these and related areas.

Advances in Robot Control : From Everyday Physics to Human-Like Movements

This volume provides a unique collection of papers written in honor of the 70th birthday of Suguru Arimoto who has long been recognized as a pioneer in the field of robot control. A variety of his research is reflected in this book, which includes contributions from leading experts in the field, who have also been closely associated with Suguru Arimoto at various stages in his distinguished career. The book is build around two themes: the physics-based robot control for coping with the so-called everyday physics problems on one hand, and the challenge of reproducing beautiful, human-like movements on the other hand. These themes defined much of Arimoto’s research in the field of robot control and are the cornerstones of his perception of human robotics.

Advances in Land Remote Sensing : System, Modeling, Inversion and Application

It systematically summarizes the past achievements and identifies the frontier issues as the research agenda for the near future. It covers all aspects of land remote sensing, from sensor systems, physical modeling, inversion algorithms, to various applications. The papers on remote sensing system evaluate the capabilities of different sensor systems for estimating key land surface variables and how they can best be improved and integrated effectively in the future.

Advances in Human-Robot Interaction

The book addresses key issues of human-robot interaction concerned with perception, modelling, control, planning and cognition, covering a wide spectrum of applications. This includes interaction and communication with robots in manufacturing environments and the collaboration and co-existence with assistive robots in domestic environments. Among the presented examples are a robotic bartender, a new programming paradigm for a cleaning robot, or an approach to interactive teaching of a robot assistant in manufacturing environment. This carefully edited book reports on contributions from leading German academic institutions and industrial companies brought together within MORPHA, a 4 year project on interaction and communication between humans and anthropomorphic robot assistants

Advanced Numerical Methods to Optimize Cutting Operations of Five-Axis Milling Machines

Presents new optimization algorithms designed to improve the efficiency of tool paths for five-axis NC machining of sculptured surfaces. The book introduces the reader to fundamental issues involved in the tool path planning such as the kinematics of five-axis machines, types of 5 axis machines, part surface representation, machining strips, optimal tool orientation, gouging avoidance and forward step error. It also introduces new methods of optimization based on research conducted by the authors, including schemes performed in the spatial domain, angular domain as well as procedures to optimize the initial setup. The book can be used by undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in the field of NC machining and CAD/CAM as well as by the corporate research groups for advanced optimization of cutting operations.

Active Sensor Planning for Multiview Vision Tasks

The book describes some effective strategies to generate a sequence of viewing poses and sensor settings for optimally completing a perception task. Several methods are proposed to solve the problems in both model-based and nonmodel-based vision tasks. For model-based applications, the method involves determination of the optimal sensor placements and a shortest path through these viewpoints for automatic generation of a perception plan.
