Uncertainty Assessment of Large Finite Element Systems

The treatment of uncertainties in the analysis of engineering structures remains one of the premium challenges in structural mechanics. It is only in recent years that the developments in stochastic and deterministic computational mechanics began to be synchronized. In this monograph novel computational procedures for the uncertainty assessment of large finite element systems are presented. The procedures are applicable to well known problems in computational stochastic mechanics, such as the stability analysis of systems with random imperfections and the dynamic analysis of deterministic systems under stochastic loading. For the dynamic analysis of deterministic systems under stochastic loading, an efficient procedure based on the Karhunen-Loève representation of the response is presented. The capabilities of the developed procedures are demonstrated with several numerical examples.

Turbulence and Diffusion : Scaling Versus Equations

This book is an introduction to the multidisciplinary field of anomalous diffusion in complex systems, with emphasis on the scaling approach as opposed to techniques based on the quantitative analysis of underlying transport equations. Typical examples of such systems are turbulent plasmas, convective rolls, zonal flow systems and stochastic magnetic fields. From the more methodological point of view, the approach relies on the general use of correlations estimates, quasilinear equations and continuous time random walk techniques. Yet, the mathematical descriptions are not meant to become a fixed set of recipes but rather develop and strengthen the reader's physical intuition and understanding on the underlying mechanisms involved.

Tuning, Timbre, Spectrum, Scale

Focuses on perceptions ofconsonance and dissonance, and how these are dependent on timbre. This alsorelates to musical scale: certain timbres sound more consonant in some scalesthan others. Sensory consonance and the ability to measure it have importantimplications for the design of audio devices and for musical theory andanalysis. Applications include methods of adapting sounds for arbitrary scales, ways to specify scales for nonharmonic sounds, and techniques of soundmanipulation based on maximizing (or minimizing) consonance. Specialconsideration is given here to a new method of adaptive tuning that canautomatically adjust the tuning of a piece based its timbral character so as tominimize dissonance. Audio examples illustrating the ideas presented areprovided for free on the Springer Extras website (http://extras.springer.com).

Transformations and Projections in Computer Graphics

Transformations and projections are used extensively in Computer Graphics, a field which is now a part of everyone’s lives via feature films, advertisements in the media, the screens of PDAs, mobile phones, and other vehicles and outlets. Transformations and Projections in Computer Graphics provides a thorough background in these two important topics in graphics. The book introduces perspective in an original way and discusses the mathematics of perspective in detail, yet in an accessible way. It also treats nonlinear projections in depth, including the popular fisheye, panorama, and map projections used by many professionals to enhance digital images. Only a basic knowledge of linear algebra, vectors, and matrices is required of readers, as key ideas are introduced slowly, examined and illustrated by figures and examples, and enforced through solved exercises.

Transdermal Drug Delivery System Patch of Testosterone

Transdermal Drug Delivery System is a medicated way to administer the active ingredient by the skin; the adhesive patch is the major representation of this system. It is placed on the healthy skin to transfer the medication through the dermas then into the bloodstream.” TDDS” historically used since 19th century. In comparison with other formulations, it has many advantages. Meanly avoidance of first pass metabolism. Several types of TDDS are prepared, they differ by the number of layers and components. Some examples have been cited and modern technology, like nanocarrier, is used in TDDS. One of the APIs used in TDDS is Testosterone; this hormone is produced by human body, secreted in stable amount, when it decreases it causes important troubles. We mention that this kind of pharmaceutical form is missed in our country (Syria) so, we studied the possibility to prepare this form in our research lab. And we take the Testosterone as API of our works.

Toll-like Receptors in Inflammation

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are critical mediators of the innate immune response in mammals. This family of receptors recognizes a variety of microbial products or motifs and initiates the host response to infection. Examples include TLR4 which recognizes lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria, TLR3 which recognizes viral double-stranded RNA, and TLR9 which recognizes CpG DNA motifs, found in both viruses and bacteria. All TLRs possess an intracellular region termed the Toll-IL-1 receptor-Resistance (TIR) domain which is essential for signaling from these receptors. The specificity of signaling from individual TLRs arises from differential utilization of adapter proteins. This specificity results in a tailoring of the host defense response depending on the microbe being sensed. TLRs are increasingly being implicated in both infectious and inflammatory diseases, notable examples being sepsis, inflammatory bowel disease, atherosclerosis, and asthma. There is, therefore, great interest in targeting TLRs therapeutically since a disruption of TLR function will result in a decrease in the production of inflammatory mediators.
