Doing integrated history and philosophy of science : A case study of the origin of genetics
offers an integrated historical and philosophical examination of the origin of genetics. The author contends that an integrated HPS analysis helps us to have a better understanding of the history of genetics, and sheds light on some general issues in the philosophy of science. consists of three parts. It begins with historical problems, revisiting the significance of the work of Mendel, de Vries, and Weldon. Then it turns to integrated HPS problems, developing an exemplar-based analysis of the development and the progress in early genetics. Finally, it discusses philosophical problems: conceptual change, evidence, and theory choice.

This book presents numerical differential quadrature (DQ) - based methods recently developed by the author. Their ability for solving generic scientific and engineering problems is demonstrated. These methods are the generic differential quadrature, the extended differential quadrature and the related discrete element analysis methods. These novel numerical techniques are both efficient and reliable. They are suitable for developing solution algorithms for various computational mechanics problems with arbitrarily complex geometry. This is shown for several comprehensive examples such as bars and beams, trusses, frames, general field problems, elasticity problems or bending of plates.

This LNAI volume, containing the proceedings of the 9th International C- ference onDiscoveryScience, is structured in three parts. The ?rstpart contains the papers/abstracts of the invited talks, the second part contains the accepted long papers, and the third part the accepted regular (short) papers. Out of 87 submitted papers, 23 were accepted for publication as long papers, and 18 as regular papers. All the submitted papers were reviewed by two or three ref- ees. Faced with these difficulties, which often manifest themselves in behaviors such as giving up trying or responding at random, the didactic action aimed at recovery is generally a local action, which arises from the identification of errors and then intervenes on knowledge deemed necessary to respond correctly. But this type of intervention generally proves to be unsuccessful, and the teacher - together with the pupil - develops a sense of helplessness and frustration.
Diapause in Aquatic Invertebrates : Theory and Human Use

It has been established that defects do exist in high-k dielectrics and they play an important role in device operation. However, very little is known about the nature of the defects or about possible techniques to eliminate, or at least minimize them. Given the absence of a feasible alternative in the near future, well-focused scientific research and aggressive development programs on high-k gate dielectrics and related devices must continue for semiconductor electronics to remain a competitive income producing force in the global market.
