Unconventional Programming Paradigms ; International Workshop UPP 2004, Le Mont Saint Michel, France, September 15-17, 2004, Revised Selected and Invited Papers

Nowadays, developers have to face the proliferation of hardware and software environments, the increasing demands of the users, the growing number of p- grams and the sharing of information, competences and services thanks to the generalization ofdatabasesandcommunication networks. Aprogramisnomore a monolithic entity conceived, produced and?nalized before being used. A p- gram is now seen as an open and adaptive frame, which, for example, can - namically incorporate services not foreseen by the initial designer. These new needs call for new control structures and program interactions. Topics in Elementary Geometry

This small book has for a long time been a unique place to find classical results from geometry, such as Pythagoras' theorem, the nine-point circle, Morley's triangle, Poncelet's polygons, and many other subjects. In addition, this book contains recent, geometric theorems which have been obtained in this classical field over the past years. There are 27 independent chapters on a wide range of topics in elementary plane Euclidean geometry, at a level just beyond what is usually taught in a good high school or college geometry course. The selection of topics is intelligent, varied, and stimulating. In a small space the author provides many thought-provoking ideas.

Tales of Research Misconduct : A Lacanian Diagnostics of Integrity Challenges in Science Novels

Contributes to the scientific misconduct debate from an oblique perspective, by analysing seven  novels devoted to this issue, namely: Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis (1925), The affair by C.P. Snow (1960), Cantor’s Dilemma by Carl Djerassi (1989), Perlmann’s Silence by Pascal Mercier (1995), Intuition by Allegra Goodman (2006),  Solar by Ian McEwan (2010) and Derailment by Diederik Stapel (2012). Scientific misconduct, i.e. fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, but also other questionable research practices, have become a  focus of concern for academic communities worldwide, but also for managers, funders and publishers of research. The aforementioned novels offer intriguing windows into integrity challenges emerging in contemporary research practices.

Survie des patients atteints de cancer en France = Survival of cancer patients in France

The Francim network brings together all the French cancer registries. It has set up an observatory for cancerous pathologies in France, the purpose of which is to provide the community with epidemiological indicators useful for the knowledge and management of this pathology, in conjunction with various institutional partners. A first output of this observatory was to provide estimates of the incidence of cancer in France in 2000. Its second output is reported in this work, and concerns the survival of cancer patients, as it could be estimated. from all cancer cases recorded from 1989 to 1997 in 20 French departmental registers. To achieve these objectives, the network joined forces with the biostatistics service of the civil hospices of Lyon, which provided statistical analysis of the data collected by the various registers. The procedures that have been put in place for the different phases of this work can be implemented on a regular basis, for subsequent estimates. They also lend themselves to the implementation of more in-depth studies that are necessary for certain cancers. These so-called “population” data usefully complement the results of studies carried out in the field of clinical research. An additional tool for epidemiological cancer surveillance is therefore now available in France, thanks to the support of the National Cancer League.

Sceptical Doubt and Disbelief in Modern European Thought : A New Pan-American Dialogue

This collection continues along a rich, fruitful path opened by Richard H. Popkin and pursued by many important scholars, like Gianni Paganini, John-Christian Laursen, and José Raimundo Maia Neto. It re-establishes that necessary dialogue between researchers of scepticism from all over the Americas, which began with Popkin, Oswaldo Porchat and Ezequiel de Olaso long ago. This insightful reflection on modern European scepticism will also serve as an important resource in the history of modern philosophy.

Sampling Methods : Exercises and Solutions

This book contains 116 exercises of sampling methods solved in detail. The exercises are grouped into chapters and are preceded by a brief theoretical review specifying the notation and the principal results that are useful for understanding the solutions. Some exercises develop the theoretical aspects of surveys, while others deal with more applied problems.

Radiation Effects on Embedded Systems

Radiation Effects on Embedded Systems aims at providing the reader with the major guidelines for coping with radiation effects on components supposed to be included in today’s applications devoted to operate in space, but also in the atmosphere at high altitude or at ground level. It contains a set of chapters based on the tutorials presented at the International School on Effects of Radiation on Embedded Systems for Space Applications (SERESSA) that was held in Manaus, Brazil, from 20 to 25 November 2005. This book will provide all IC engineers with useful information regarding outside (environmental) influences on their designs and is an excellent reference.

One Hundred Years of Intuitionism (1907-2007) : The Cerisy Conference

With logicism and formalism, intuitionism is one of the main foundations for mathematics proposed in the twentieth century; and since the seventies, notably its views on logic have become important also outside foundational studies, with the development of theoretical computer science. The aim of the book is threefold: to review and complete the historical account of intuitionism; to present recent philosophical work on intuitionism; and to give examples of new technical advances and applications of intuitionism.

Noncommunicable diseases

Focuses on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory disease and their five shared main risk factors (tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and air pollution) as defined by the United Nations, this book provides a synopsis of one of the world’s biggest challenges of the 21st century. NCDs prematurely claim the lives of millions of people across the world every year, with untold suffering to hundreds of millions more, trapping many people in poverty and curtailing economic growth and sustainable development. While resources between and within countries largely differ, the key principles of surveillance, prevention and management apply to all countries, as does the need to focus resources on the most cost-effective and affordable interventions and the need for strong political will, sufficient resources, and sustained and broad partnerships. This compendium consists of 59 short and accessible chapters in six sections: (i) describing and measuring the burden and impact of NCDs / (ii) the burden, epidemiology and priority interventions for individual NCDs / (iii) social determinants and risk factors for NCDs and priority interventions / (iv) global policy / (v) cross-cutting issues / and (vi) stakeholder action.

Networking -- ICN 2005 ; Vol. 3420 : 4th International Conference on Networking, Reunion Island, France, April 17-21, 2005, Proceedings, Part I

The International Conference on Networking (ICN 2005) was the fourth conf- ence in its series aimed at stimulating technical exchange in the emerging and important ?eld of networking. On behalf of the International Advisory C- mittee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the proceedings of the 2005 event. Networking faces dramatic changes due to the customer-centric view, the venue of the next generation networks paradigm, the push from ubiquitous n- working, and the new service models. Despite legacy problems, which researchers and industry are still discovering and improving the state of the art, the ho- zon has revealed new challenges that some of the authors tackled through their submissions. In fact ICN 2005 was very well perceived by the international networking community. A total of 651 papers from more than 60 countries were submitted, from which 238 were accepted. Each paper was reviewed by several members of the Technical Program Committee. This year, the Advisory Committee revalidated various accepted papers after the reviews had been incorporated. We perceived a signi?cant improvement in the number of submissions and the quality of the submissions. The ICN 2005 program covered a variety of research topics that are of current interest, starting with Gridnetworks, multicasting, TCP optimizations, QoS and security, emergency services, and network resiliency. The Program Committee selected also three tutorials and invited speakers that addressed the latest - search results from the international industries and academia, and reports on ?ndings from mobile, satellite, and personal communications related to 3rd- and 4th-generation research projects and standardization.
