Wavelets and Signal Processing : An Application-Based Introduction
As the applications of wavelet transform have spread to diverse areas of signal analysis and compression, students and practitioners need a practical introduction and overview. This textbook provides that concise and practical introduction to the underlying foundations and important applications. Through numerous examples and case studies from industry, it demonstrates both the potential and the limits of wavelet techniques, expanding the usual treatment beyond the discrete wavelet transform to the continuous transform. Providing the basics of Fourier transforms and digital filters in the appendix, the text is supplemented with end-of-chapter exercises, MATLAB code, and a short introduction to the MATLAB wavelet toolbox. Students of electrical engineering and engineers in industry can benefit from the concentration on real applications
Voice controlled robotic arm
The study presents an innovative voice-controlled prosthetic hand for amputees below the elbow to retrieve some of the hand movements of their daily life. This light weight hand is designed to enable movement of the fingers as the user commands, using artificial intelligence (AI) and a Raspberry Pi 4 computer. A speech recognition algorithm is used to detect the spoken command from the user and send it to the AI module which then drives servomotors placed inside each finger of the prosthetic hand in order to give motion. With help of a mobile application that allows the user to insert new commands with different moves among other features.
Value Creation in Successful LBOs
Daniel Pindur analyzes value creation in successful LBOs on investment level conceptually and empirically from an LBO equity investor perspective. Based on the LBO transaction model, the author decomposes total proceeds to LBO equity investors and derives a two-tier framework of an internal and an external perspective, thereby structuring the conceptual discussion of various determinants affecting these components. Founded on a novel database with detailed company- and transaction-specific information for a sample of 42 realized European LBO investments, he then quantifies LBO investment performance measures and their components and identifies the determinants of value creation in LBO investments.
Value Creation in Leveraged Buyouts : Analysis of Factors Driving Private Equity Investment Performance
Over the last years, buyout activity has risen dramatically - especially in Europe - sparking intense public discussion about financial investors' role and the value they can add to companies and the overall economy.Using quantitative analysis, he shows that various exogenous factors with respect to timing, industry, public market as well as deal specific factors can statistically be related to a buyout deal's performance. It also provides evidence of a "GP effect" in leveraged buyouts, i.e. that certain characteristics of a Private Equity firm and its investment professionals as well as a firm's buyout strategy approach and certain buyout target characteristics are important success factors.
Two Algebraic Byways from Differential Equations : Gröbner Bases and Quivers
Presents a fascinating collection of lecture notes focusing on differential equations from two viewpoints: formal calculus (through the theory of Gröbner bases) and geometry (via quiver theory). Gröbner bases serve as effective models for computation in algebras of various types.Divided into two parts, the book first discusses the theory of Gröbner bases in their commutative and noncommutative contexts, with a focus on algorithmic aspects and applications of Gröbner bases to analysis on systems of partial differential equations, effective analysis on rings of differential operators, and homological algebra. It then introduces representations of quivers, quiver varieties and their applications to the moduli spaces of meromorphic connections on the complex projective line.
Treatment of elbow lesions : New Aspects in Diagnosis and Surgical Techniques
The complexity of elbow anatomy and function often leads to an adverse response to traumatic and inflammatory conditions. For this reason, many standard orthopaedic texts advise caution regarding the surgical management of traumatic and degenerative lesions. The aim of this book is to didactically describe the different pathologies of the elbow and their surgical treatment, thus helping to reduce the incidence of complications such as stiff elbow, heterotypic bone and joint instability, and degenerative arthritis.
Transgenesis and the Management of Vector-Borne Disease
Parasitic, bacterial and viral agents continue to challenge the welfare of humans, livestock, wild life and plants worldwide. The public health impact and financial consequences of these diseases are particularly hard on the already overburdened economies of developing countries especially in the tropics. Many of these disease agents utilize insect hosts (vectors) to achieve their transmission to mammals. In the past, these diseases were largely controlled by insecticide-based vector reduction strategies. Now, many of these diseases have reemerged in the tropics, recolonizing their previous range, and expanding into new territories previously not considered to be endemic. Habitat change, irrigation practices, atmospheric and climate change, insecticide and drug resistance as well as increases in global tourism, human traffic and commercial activities, have driven the reemergence and spread of vector borne diseases. While these diseases can be controlled through interventions aimed at both their vertebrate and invertebrate hosts, no effective vaccines exist, and only limited therapeutic prospects are available for their control in mammalian hosts. Molecular technologies such as transgenesis, which is the subject of this book, stand to increase the toolbox and benefit disease management strategies.
Toolbox Digital Business : Leadership, Business Models, Technologis and Change
Provides important guidelines for the digital transformation process and shows how established companies in particular can use digitization for their strategic further development. It highlights developments in IT and data management, supported by AI, and analyzes how marketing, sales, HR, the corporate organization and controlling must be transformed in the digital age in order to take advantage of these new opportunities as early and comprehensively as possible. The tools offered in this book will support companies in actively shaping the change.
The Professoriate : Profile of a Profession
What does it mean to be an academic in the twenty first century? Clearly, there is no one answer to this question, as the diversity evident in the following chapters reveals. Elite research universities often tend to join with others of their kind, so that a professor from an elite US institution may well undertake a Japanese sabbatical (if at all) at the University of Tokyo, a UK semester at Oxford or Cambridge, or an Australian semester at the University of Sydney, or perhaps Melbourne. At each, they can expect to have at their disposal well-stocked libraries, replete with requisite books, journals and databases, (many now available electronically), as well as highly regarded specialist peers in their research areas, with whom they can discuss their work in detail.
The Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry in China: Opportunities and Threats for Foreign Companies
Don’t miss out on China!” and “What are you doing about China?” Catch phrases like these are spreading among managers all over the world. Just take a brief look at the business class occupancy of flights from Europe, North America or Japan to major Chinese cities: This gives you a glimpse of how business people are attracted by steady growth rates of 6 percent to 10 percent. It also indicates how much attention is given to a market featuring 1.3 billion potential consumers and a government committed to rapidly changing the country from an agricultu- dominated developing country into one of the world’s economic powerhouses. Most of the global industrial players have had economic ties with China for decades already, but they were further strengthened after the country’s opening to the world in the early 1980s. Furthermore, China’s accession to the World Trade Or- nization is expected to catapult this already surging economy into another sphere of development.
The Business Idea : The Early Stages of Entrepreneurship
Successful business ideas are not so much about talent as about a systematic approach. The Business Idea encourages new ways of thinking when it comes to entrepreneurship and innovation. Too many ventures originate in the solutions the entrepreneur has to offer and not in the problem the customer needs solved. Business plans done this way can often lead to disappointment. The Business Idea leaves behind this product orientated logic. The book presents new, applicable entrepreneurship methods for developing creative market insight, for identifying windows of opportunity, creating business concepts and entrepreneurial strategies for successful market entry. Entrepreneurship is a complex and risky process compared to almost everything else in business life, so it richly deserves to have its own theoretical and methodological toolbox. The Business Idea provides the tools making it of interest to anyone who works with getting an enterprise off the ground or studies entrepreneurship.
Storytelling : Branding in Practice
As a concept, storytelling has won a decisive foothold in the debate on how brands of the future will be shaped. Yet, companies are still confused as to how and why storytelling can make a difference to their business. What is the point of telling stories anyway? What makes a good story? And how do you go about telling it so that it supports the company brand? This book is written for practitioners by practitioners. Through real life examples, simple guidelines and practical tools, the book aims to inspire companies to use storytelling as a means of building their brand - internally as well as externally

Smart management : How simple heuristics help leaders make good decisions in an uncertain world
Offers an evidence-based yet practical discussion of how business leaders can use smart heuristics to make good decisions in a VUCA world. building on the fast-and-frugal heuristics program, smart management demonstrates the efficacy of heuristic decision making in a twofold approach. first, it introduces the concept of ecological rationality, which prescribes the environmental conditions under which specific heuristics work well. second, the book describes a repertoire of heuristics, referred to as the adaptive toolbox, that leaders, managers, and professionals can develop and rely on to make a variety of decisions, such as on business strategy, negotiation, and personnel selection.

Simplicial Complexes of Graphs
A graph complex is a finite family of graphs closed under deletion of edges. Graph complexes show up naturally in many different areas of mathematics, including commutative algebra, geometry, and knot theory. Identifying each graph with its edge set, one may view a graph complex as a simplicial complex and hence interpret it as a geometric object. This volume examines topological properties of graph complexes, focusing on homotopy type and homology. Many of the proofs are based on Robin Forman's discrete version of Morse theory. As a byproduct, this volume also provides a loosely defined toolbox for attacking problems in topological combinatorics via discrete Morse theory. In terms of simplicity and power, arguably the most efficient tool is Forman's divide and conquer approach via decision trees; it is successfully applied to a large number of graph and digraph complexes.

Ringtailed Lemur Biology : Lemur catta in Madagascar
Ringtailed Lemur Biology is the first comprehensive volume dedicated to the Lemur catta, Madagascar's flagship species, whose black and white tails adorn tourist brochures and children's schoolbooks, and which has been studied in the wild for forty years. Written by leading research scientists in the field, this is the authoritative volume on ringtailed lemur distribution, ecology, social behavior, and health and includes the first maps of their distribution, population, and decline. The editors, and contributors, have united to produce a book of cutting edge knowledge on the lemur species whose troop structure is most like the monkeys of other continents but which proves, like so much else in Madagascar, to be unique.
