Yeast as tool in cancer research

The collection of articles in this volume explores the use of yeast in pathway analysis and drug discovery. Using yeast in the study of drug targets and metabolism can help to make a science of what has been largely an empirical activity. A science of drug discovery would permit rigorous answers to important questions.

WC 2006 offers a strong and diverse scientific program covering a wide range of issues and challenges that are currently present in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering on the theme of “Imaging the Future Medicine. ” Approximately, 2,500 papers will be presented in oral and poster sessions on the 25 tracks covering around 250 sessions.

Womens Health in Clinical Practice : A Handbook for Primary Care

Traditionally, women’s health has been synonymous with obstetrics and gynecology. With the exception of Family Medicine physicians who are trained in obstetric and gynecologic issues, most primary care physicians have received little training in reproductive health issues even though they care for women and girls. In recent years, there has been growing recognition that sex differences do exist between the organ systems of women and men, and research about male and female physiologic differences has bolstered the growing body of knowledge about sex differences. Women’s Health: A Handbook for Primary Care presents the most recent changes in current research and provides the reader with an easily accessible reference to common women’s health issues. Utilizing Sumac (Rhus coriaria) in pharmaceutical preparations for skin health

Aims to extract gelatin from sumac berries and incorporate it into two cosmetic products—a lip balm and a facial/hand mask—evaluating their physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, and skinbenefiting attributes. A secondary objective is to assess the level of awareness among the Syrian population regarding sumac’s various uses beyond its culinary applications. Sumac fruits were mechanically ground and subjected to immersion, ultrasound, and microwave-assisted extraction methods, followed by filtration and evaporation to yield a viscous gelatinous extract.

Transgenesis and the Management of Vector-Borne Disease

Parasitic, bacterial and viral agents continue to challenge the welfare of humans, livestock, wild life and plants worldwide. The public health impact and financial consequences of these diseases are particularly hard on the already overburdened economies of developing countries especially in the tropics. Many of these disease agents utilize insect hosts (vectors) to achieve their transmission to mammals. In the past, these diseases were largely controlled by insecticide-based vector reduction strategies. Now, many of these diseases have reemerged in the tropics, recolonizing their previous range, and expanding into new territories previously not considered to be endemic. Habitat change, irrigation practices, atmospheric and climate change, insecticide and drug resistance as well as increases in global tourism, human traffic and commercial activities, have driven the reemergence and spread of vector borne diseases. While these diseases can be controlled through interventions aimed at both their vertebrate and invertebrate hosts, no effective vaccines exist, and only limited therapeutic prospects are available for their control in mammalian hosts. Molecular technologies such as transgenesis, which is the subject of this book, stand to increase the toolbox and benefit disease management strategies.

Theories in and of Mathematics Education : Theory Strands in German Speaking Countries

This survey provides an overview of German meta-discourse on theories and mathematics education as a scientific discipline, from the 1970s to the 1990s. Two theory strands are offered: a semiotic view related to Peirce and Wittgenstein (presented by Willibald Dörfler), and the theory of learning activity by Joachim Lompscher (presented by Regina Bruder and Oliver Schmitt). By networking the two theoretical approaches in a case study of learning fractions, it clarifies the nature of the two theories, how they can be related to inform practice and renew TME-issues for mathematics education as a scientific discipline.

The increased attention given to farm animal welfare in the West derives largely from the fact that the relentless pursuit of financial reward and efficiency has led to the development of intensive animal production systems, that challenge the conscience of many consumers in those countries.
