Wittgenstein, Language and Information : "Back to the Rough Ground!"
This book is an extension of the discussions presented in Blair’s 1990 book "Language and Representation in Information Retrieval", which was selected as the "Best Information Science Book of the Year" by the American Society for Information Science (ASIS). That work stated that the Philosophy of Language had the best theory for understanding meaning in language, and within the Philosophy of Language, the work of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein was found to be most perceptive. The success of that book provided an incentive to look more deeply into Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language, and how it can help us to understand how to represent the intellectual content of information. This is what the current title does, and by using this theory it creates a firm foundation for future Information Retrieval research.

Wildland Fire Smoke in the United States : A Scientific Assessment
This book synthesizes current information on wildland fire smoke in the United States, providing a scientific foundation for addressing the production of smoke from wildland fires. This will be increasingly critical as smoke exposure and degraded air quality are expected to increase in extent and severity in a warmer climate. Accurate smoke information is a foundation for helping individuals and communities to effectively mitigate potential smoke impacts from wildfires and prescribed fires. Each chapter provides a summary of priorities for future research that provide a roadmap for developing scientific information that can improve smoke and fire management over the next decade.
Wie ticken Jugendliche 2016? : Lebenswelten von Jugendlichen im Alter von 14 bis 17 Jahren in Deutschland = How do young people tick in 2016? : Living environments of young people aged 14 to 17 in Germany
How do young people live and experience their everyday life? How do you perceive the historical and current conditions in Germany and in the world? What makes sense to them? What life plans do they pursue? What role do mobility, sustainability and digital media play in your life? The SINUS Youth Study 2016 empirically investigates these and other questions and depicts the variety of perspectives of young people's living environments. She succeeds in doing this particularly vividly by allowing 14 to 17-year-olds to have their say in the form of numerous quotes and creative self-testimonies. It is also unique that young people provide photographic insights into their living environments and, for the first time, have asked their questions themselves as interviewers. The SINUS youth study thus gives the young generation a public voice that needs to be heard carefully. Because looking at young people is always a look at the future of a country.

What Have We Learned? : Macroeconomic Policy after the Crisis
Since 2008, economic policymakers and researchers have occupied a brave new economic world. Previous consensuses have been upended, former assumptions have been cast into doubt, and new approaches have yet to stand the test of time. Policymakers have been forced to improvise and researchers to rethink basic theory. George Akerlof, Nobel Laureate and one of this volume's editors, compares the crisis to a cat stuck in a tree, afraid to move. In April 2013, the International Monetary Fund brought together leading economists and economic policymakers to discuss the slowly emerging contours of the macroeconomic future. This book offers their combined insights.
What do children need to flourish? : Conceptualizing and measuring indicators of positive development
Regardless of its validity, many adults share a belief that today’s youth face an inauspicious future. Drugs, sex, violence, disintegration of the nuclear family, technology that replaces interpersonal relationships—that’s what you hear in the news. The media, through its dramatization of the dangers and risks children confront and pose, have created a well-established image of disenfranchised, hostile, and often-destructive children and adolescents. This image ignores the many children who are thriving as well as the possibility of positive outcomes for children and youth.
Wetlands and Natural Resource Management
We have given the organizers of these symposia the opportunity to produce one chapter for these books with the integrated content of their symposium. This has resulted in 25 chapters, of which 13 are included in Volume 190 under the heading “Wetlands and Natural Resource Management”and 12 in Volume 191 under the heading “Wetlands: Functi- ing,Biodiversity Conservation and Restoration”. With these books,we had the aim to summarize the most important recent scientific results in wetland science, their applications in wetland and water resource management and their implications for the development of global, national and regional policies in the perspective of the ever-progressing deterioration of natural wetlands and the major impacts that future climate change will have.
Western North American Juniperus Communities : A Dynamic Vegetation Type
Juniperus woodlands and savannas in western North America are both extensive and dynamic, occupying approximately 55 million hectares. Various species of Juniperus have been increasing in density and are expanding into associated grasslands, reducing the size of the grasslands. The reason for the Juniperus expansion is highly debated, but seems to be related to high levels of herbivory, changing fire frequency and probably global change phenomena. Western North American Juniperus Communities addresses various aspects of the biology, ecology, and management of Juniperus woodlands and savannas, by synthesizing past, current, and proposed future research. The book includes information on community distribution, composition, and structure; the effects of alterations in ecosystem processes such as modifications in water budgets; and the impacts of humans, herbivory, and fire on the communities. The book will provide professionals with a solid background in Juniperus ecosystems, enabling them to better understand the communities and manage the communities for maximum sustained productivity and diversity.
