International Humanitarian Law Facing New Challenges ; Symposium in Honour of KNUT IPSEN

Recent armed conflicts, whether international or non-international in character, are in many respects characterized by a variety of asymmetries. These asymmetries may be overstressed, sometime even abused, and ultimately virtually meaningless. In order to discuss these and other questions a most distinguished group of experts in the field of the law of armed conflicts gathered in Berlin in June 2005. The goal of that colloquium, which marked the 70th birthday of Knut Ipsen, was to find operable solutions for problems and challenges the contemporary law of armed conflict is confronted with.

Handbook on Tunnels and Underground Works ; Vol.1 : Concept – Basic Principles of Design

Provides a new, global, updated, thorough, clear and practical risk-based approach to tunnelling design and construction methods, and discusses detailed examples of solutions applied to relevant case histories. It provides the following features and benefits: updated vision on tunnelling design, tools, materials and construction balanced mix of theory, technology and applied experience different and harmonized points of view from academics, professionals and contractors easy consultation in the form of a handbook risk-oriented approach to tunnelling problems.

Design applications of raft foundations

Examines alternative design procedures for plain and piled raft foundations. Chapters are written by leading consultants and contractors from around the world who draw on their extensive experience in the UK and overseas. It explores the broad assumptions that are made in the analysis of soil - structure interaction, together with the associated calculation methods. In particular, the book contains extensive references to recent work on the subject, and gives many examples of project applications covering a wide range of structural forms and ground conditions.

Design Added Value : How Design Increases Value for Architects and Engineers

Enables architects, engineers, contractors and owner-clients of buildings to benefit from extraordinary design and construction features. It explains the rationale and motivation for D-AV methodology, outlines and illustrates this methodology with examples, provides complete and detailed examples of how the key analysis techniques work through historical case studies, and describes specific methods used in application of the D-AV methodology, such as Bayesian statistics, cost benefit analysis, pairwise comparison techniques, cognitive walkthroughs, and optimization.

Contracting and safety : Exploring outsourcing practices in high-hazard industries

This book examines the increase in outsourcing, contracting and subcontracting as ways of organising work. It explores the impact of these employment arrangements on public safety, particularly when they are linked to complex supply networks in a range of engineering industries including oil and gas, nuclear power and aviation.

Construction Project Organising

Investigates the relationship between structure and action, and how patterns of action are created, recreated and maintained by scrutinising the myriad of organisational arrangements between clients, financiers, design teams, contractors, stakeholders and supply chains. It also discusses different concepts in the development and management of construction project organisations, including formation and maintenance issues.

Conflict prevention in project management : Strategies, methods, checklists, and case studies

This handbook is about the handling of external conflicts in international technical projects written for Project Managers and Engineers, Sales Managers, Executives and Legal Managers as seen from the client's as well as from the contractor's side. It is also for students seeking to become leaders in these disciplines and not to reproduce mistakes that others have made before them. The book does not try to give legal advice, but it helps engineers and project managers how to plan and execute their project in order to avoid major conflicts during the project.

Collapsing Structures and Public Mismanagement

This book demonstrates how accidents happen, how social processes are fundamental to their occurrence, and how learning and inference about their causes is a core public management function. Along the way, Seibel masterfully musters evidence from a multitude of sources to painstakingly document both bridge and building failures and the organizational pathologies that accompany them. This is a must-read for those who want to better understand such 'black swan' events and the search for resilience.

Cathodic protection for reinforced concrete structures

For specialist contractors, large consultants and owners of corrosion damaged structures, and looks at international experience with this technique. It examines why corrosion is occurring, the differences in the application of CP with the stark dichotomy in its success and failure, and finally ways in which its performance can be improved on future installations.

Building a collaborative project management system: (Click)

Speaking on construction projects, we can imagine the huge amount of work, effort and time spent to complete any project. Because of the need for tools that facilitate the process of managing and tracking work and managing huge data and information and making it common to all the stockholder involved in the project, this system has been found to meet those needs of engineers, where it can manage employees, materials ,workers and the huge amount of data and enables it to track the progress of work .This system provides the possibility of communication between managers and this The system is considered a tool of the BIM system, which stands for Building Information Modeling.

Airport Building Information Modelling

Details how Building Information Modelling is being successfully deployed in the planning, design, construction and future operation of the Istanbul New Airport, a mega-scale construction project incorporating a varying mix of infrastructures including terminals, runways, passenger gates, car parks, railways and roads. The book demonstrates how Airport Building Information Modelling (ABIM) is being used to: • facilitate collaboration, cooperation and integrated project delivery • manage subcontractors and eliminate cost over-runs • reduce waste on site and enhance overall quality • connect people in a virtual environment to encourage collaborative working • provide clients with an effective interface for lifecycle management including: design development, construction documentation, construction phases and BIM and Big Data Integration for future facilities management
