Marine, Freshwater, and Wetlands Biodiversity
Marine, coastal and wetland habitats are threatened, not only through exploitation, but also by the prospect of climate change – as ocean currents change course, sea levels rise, and rainfall patterns change. Even the once-common cod is now under threat from the combined effects of over-fishing and a dramatic change-induced decrease in the plankton that cod larvae feed on. Meanwhile, coral reefs remain especially vulnerable to rapid sea-level changes exacerbated by the effects of tourism and disease. This book gathers together a wide range of papers reporting on key research into the biodiversity conservation of these critical and increasingly threatened habitats. Collectively these papers provide a snap-shot of the types of problems they are experiencing, and offer a wealth of topical examples which render this volume especially valuable to teachers of courses in marine, freshwater and wetlands ecology, biological conservation and ecological restoration.
Mannitol : Chemistry, Uses and Potential Side Effects
Presents topical research in the study of the chemistry, uses and potential side effects of mannitol. Topics discussed include the utilization and production of D-mannitol by bacteria; concentration of mannitol and other soluble carbohydrates in the crustose lichen rhizocarpon geographicum; disease-related changes and mannitols use for clinical disorders; use of mannitol in thermal energy storage applications; and chiral phosphorous ligands derived from D-mannitol.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Ischemic Stroke
The imaging of stroke has undergone significant changes owing to the rapid progress in imaging technology. This volume, comprising three parts, is designed to provide a comprehensive summary of the current role of MR imaging in patients with ischemic stroke. The first part outlines the clinical presentations of stroke and discusses the diagnostic efficacy and therapeutic impact of MR imaging. The second and third parts form the core of the volume, and are based on a novel approach in that the topic is presented from two very different viewpoints. Part 2 provides a detailed presentation of the distinguishing features of stroke from the radiologist's perspective. By contrast, part 3 addresses the needs of the clinician, documenting specific stroke syndromes and their correlates on MR imaging. The overall aim has been to create a well-illustrated volume with broad appeal that links pathology, radiology and stroke medicine in an informative manner.
Lymphocyte Signal Transduction
Signal transduction through leukocyte receptors involves a variety of signaling molecules including kinases, phosphatases, adaptor proteins, small GTPases GTP exchange factors, membrane phospholipids as well as others. These signal transducers, regulated by inter- and intra-molecular interactions, as well as by various post-translational modifications, lead to the activation of transcription factors that mediate cellular differentiation and growth, effector cell functions, and apoptotic cell death. Several investigators from various parts of the world convened at the 3rd Lymphocyte Signal Transduction Workshop in Crete, Greece from May 27 to June 1, 2005 to discuss their most recent findings in leukocyte signaling. This volume represents a collection of topics discussed during the conference.
Lung biology and pathophysiology
The lungs are the organ for gas exchange between the body and the external environment. Dysfunction of upper airway epithelium and smooth muscle cells leads to pathogenesis of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, and other conditions, resulting in airway inflammation and narrowing. Injury to alveolar epithelium and endothelium causes influx of neutrophil and protein-rich fluid from circulation, resulting in edema and disruption of gas exchange. In addition to lung structural cells, immune cells, including alveolar macrophages and lymphocytes play critical roles in the maintenance of lung function. This book contributes to the understanding homeostasis of lung cells in the physiological and pathological conditions critical to the development of novel therapeutics.

Les techniques de monitorage hémodynamique en réanimation = Hemodynamic monitoring techniques in intensive care
The hemodynamic monitoring of intensive care patients is undergoing major changes. Technological advances such as computerization and miniaturization have made it possible to considerably expand the range of assessment tools available at the bedside. Thus, the approach to cardiovascular monitoring - which was once readily "invasive" and global - is gradually becoming non-invasive and locoregional or even tissue. At the same time, the combined evolution of technology and physiological and pathophysiological concepts now provides the clinician with access to a variety of "functional hemodynamic monitoring". The aim of this book is to provide a better understanding of the interest and the limits of the hemodynamic parameters accessible by current hemodynamic monitoring techniques. It thus aims to ensure that the use of these techniques is perfectly mastered by resuscitators and anesthetists-resuscitators so that patient care is ultimately optimal.

Lake Verevi, Estonia : A highly stratified hypertrophic lake
The present book summarises investigations on Lake Verevi (surface 12.6 ha, mean depth 3.6 m). The seventeen articles in this issue deal with a wide range of questions, starting with a holistic overview of the ecological status, over assessments of long-term changes in biotic and abiotic conditions and finishing with proposed restoration plans. Abiotic chapters provide calculations on water and mass balance, distribution and fractions of phosphorus in the sediment, optical properties and penetration of radiation in the water column, sedimentation rate during the formation of stratification, and nitrogen circulation characteristics.
Lake Taihu, China : Dynamics and Environmental Change
There are many shallow lakes in the world. Many of them play an important socio-economic role as contributors to the drinking water supply, in flood attenuation, fisheries and recreation activities. Because of the current anthropogenic changes in the environment, such lakes rapidly respond to eutrophication and swamping. It is often hard to address these issues because many changes in the ecosystems of shallow lakes are associated with little studied physical processes. This interaction between the aquatic biota and the physical and chemical environment increases the complexity of shallow lake ecosystems. Lake Taihu, located in the delta of Yangtze River, is a typical large, shallow eutrophic lake with area of 2338 km2 and maximum depth of less than 3m . This book provides basic data on various aspects of this lake and summarizes research work on the interaction between its ecology and physical limnology. It will be a reference for teachers and students of freshwater ecology and biology, the aquatic environment in general, and, most strikingly, for all those interested in physical limnology.
L’esprit de l’aiguille : L’apport du Yi Jing à la pratique de l’acupuncture = The Spirit of the Needle: The contribution of the Yi Jing to the practice of acupuncture
Acupuncture deciphers and heals human beings in all their mutations. The symbolism of Yi Jing joins the humanism of this Traditional Medicine for a dynamic reading of the changes and transformations at work in human beings. The double reflection generates a global vision of the human being and the approach to patients is changed. After an approach to the state of mind, encountered in these two fields, the author sets out to find the oldest roots of the notions of Yin and Yang. This allows him to identify the main strengths of the constitution of a human being and to deepen its symbolic construction. Three fields of application of this approach are then studied. The Extraordinary Meridians are viewed from a descriptive and behavioral perspective, which makes them extremely lively and familiar. This original book is intended for any practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine curious to broaden their field of investigation. Dr M. Vinogradoff has been practicing acupuncture for 25 years. He is a member of the French Acupuncture Association, the French Acupuncture College and the Ricci Institute. After having published the complete translation of Yi Jing, in 2006 he published a novel, the action of which is set in Ancient China.
Issues of Decapod Crustacean Biology
This volume presents the proceedings of the eighth Colloquium Crustacea Decapoda Mediterranea, which was held at the Ionian University on Corfu Island, Greece, from 2 to 6 September 2002, and reflects recent advancements in decapod crustacean research.
