Bionanotechnology : Proteins to Nanodevices
Bionanotechnology is the key integrative technology of the 21st century and aims to use the knowledge, gathered from the natural construction of cellular systems, for the advancement of science and engineering. Investigating the topology and communication processes of cell parts can lead to invention of novel biological devices with exciting applications. Though microscale to nanoscale research offers an excellent space for the development of futuristic technologies, a number of challenges must be overcome. Due to paucity of a dedicated literature on the protein based nanodevices we bring you this monograph that combines collective research works of scientists probing into this fascinating universe of bionanotechnology. The monograph has been written with an aim of surveying engineering design principles of biomolecular nanodevices, prototype nanodevices based on redox proteins, bacteriorhodopsins and natural fibers, and touching upon the future developments in the field.

Bacterial Biofilms
This volume tends to focus on the biology of biofilms that affect human disease. It opens with chapters that provide the reader with current perspectives on biofilm development, physiology, environmental and regulatory effects, the role of quorum sensing, and resistance/phenotypic persistence to antimicrobial agents during biofilm growth. The next chapters are devoted to common problematic biofilms, those that colonize venous and urinary catheters. The final series of chapters examines biofilm formation by four species that are important pathogens and well studied models, one of which, Yersinia pestis, cleverly adopts a biofilm state of growth within its insect vector to promote disease transmission to mammalian hosts.

Component-Based Digital Movie Production : Reference Model of an Integrated Production System
The ongoing digitization process affects all areas of the media industry. Within the scientific discussion, movie production is little observed although it currently faces crucial structural developments. The change to digital production processes allows new ways of cooperation and coordination in the project networks. Matematica e cultura in Europa
Non è vero che la matematica susciti sempre poco interesse. Questa almeno è l'impressione che si ricava quando lo spunto per parlarne viene non solo dalla scienza e dalla tecnologia, ma anche dall'arte, dalla letteratura, dal cinema e dal teatro. Ce lo ha insegnato Michele Emmer con i suoi convegni Matematica e Cultura e lo abbiamo sperimentato a Bologna con le iniziative del 2000 per l'Anno Mondiale della Matematica e per Bologna Città Europea della Cultura. D’altra parte, negli ultimi anni abbiamo finalmente visto sullo schermo come protagonisti di film di successo dei matematici, non rappresentati come individui strani, ma come professionisti che svolgono il proprio lavoro, non necessariamente di insegnanti. Anche alcune opere teatrali di risonanza internazionale hanno parlato di matematici e questo ci ha spinto a organizzare per la prima volta in Italia, a Bologna, la rassegna Matematica e Teatro, che ha dato occasione non solo di assistere a spettacoli molto piacevoli, ma anche di parlare dei rapporti tra scienza, matematica e potere al tempo di Napoleone, di numeri primi, di teoria di Galois.

Marine Surface Films : Chemical Characteristics, Influence on Air-Sea Interactions and Remote Sensing
Since the late 1960s, various groups have investigated the influence of marine surface films on mechanisms dominating energy and mass transfer across the ocean/atmosphere interface. However, a compendium summarizing the state-of-the-art research in this field is still missing. The book fills this gap and transfers the accumulated knowledge to the scientific community.
