Immunogenetics of Autoimmune Disease
Utoimmunity is the downstream outcome of a rather extensive and coordinated series of events that include loss of self-tolerance, peripheral lymphocyte Aactivation, disruption of the blood-systems barriers, cellular infiltration into the target organs and local inflammation. Cytokines, adhesion molecules, growth factors, antibodies, and other molecules induce and regulate critical cell functions that perpetuate inflammation, leading to tissue injury and clinical phenotype. The nature and intensity of this response as well as the physiological ability to restore homeostasis are to a large extent conditioned by the unique amino acid sequences that define allelic variants on each of the numerous participating mol ecules. Therefore, the coding genes in their germline configuration play a primary role in determining who is at risk for developing such disorders, how the disease progresses, and how someone responds to therapy. Although genetic components in these diseases are clearly present, the lack of obvious and homogeneous modes of transmission has slowed progress by prevent ing the full exploitation of classical genetic epidemiologic techniques. Furthermore, autoimmune diseases are characterized by modest disease risk heritability and m- tifaceted interactions with environmental influences. Yet, several recent discoveries have dramatically changed our ability to examine genetic variation as it relates to human disease. In addition to the development of large-scale laboratory methods and tools to efficiently recognize and catalog DNA diversity, over the past few years there has been real progress in the application of new analytical and data-manage ment approaches

It was our great pleasure to host the 4th International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (CIVR) at the National University of Singapore on 20–22 July 2005. CIVR aims to provide an international forum for the discussion of research challenges and exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners in image/video retrieval technologies. It addresses innovative research in the broad ?eld of image and video retrieval. A unique feature of this conference is the high level of participation by researchers from both academia and industry. Another unique feature of CIVR this year was in its format – it o?ered both the traditional oral presentation sessions, as well as the short presentation cum poster sessions. The latter provided an informal alternative forum for animated discussions and exchanges of ideas among the participants.After a rigorous review process, 20 papers were accepted for oral presentations, and 42 papers were accepted for poster presentations. In addition to the accepted submitted papers, the program also included 4 invited papers, 1 keynote industrial paper, and 4 invited industrial papers. Altogether, we o?ered a diverse and interesting program, addressing the current interests and future trends in this area.

Aims to outline the set of current international knowledge on disease awareness in various neuropsychiatric conditions (hemiplegia resulting from brain damage, psychosis, dementia and mood disorders), with particular reference to anosognosia and 'insight. The comparison between different conceptualizations and the variety of clinical manifestations gives rise to a very complex picture that requires a multidimensional approach, especially as regards the diagnostic moment. To this end, the authors propose an integration of various contributions on the pathogenetic level, based on neuroanatomical evidence and supported by the most recent neuroimaging techniques. In addition, the use of a complex diagnostic battery is suggested, capable of analyzing the different aspects of the phenomenon, and distinguishing it from the psychological defensive mechanism of denial. Research in this field is also essential to promote rehabilitation and compliance with treatment, as well as the enrichment of knowledge on the processes underlying consciousness and awareness in the human being.

Hydroboration and Organic Synthesis : 9-Borabicyclo [3.3.1] nonane (9-BBN)
Borabicyclo [3.3.1]nonane, a commercially available reagent, is the most versatile hydroborating reagent to synthesize organoboranes (B-R-9-BBN). The reagent exhibits remarkable regio-, chemo-, and stereoselectivity during hydroboration reactions. The organoboranes can be converted to C-H, C-O, C-N, C-S, C-halogen, C-metal and above all C-C bonds. In addition, the suitable substituted / unsaturated R of B-R-9-BBN can be utilized to produce dienes, enynes, allenes etc. with defined stereochemistry. 9-BBN’s derivatives have been elegantly used for the asymmetric reduction of ketone moiety. Hot cracking phenomena in welds
The first chapter provides an overview of the various hot cracking phenomena. Different mechanisms of solidification cracking proposed in the past decades are summarized and new insight is particularly given into the mechanism of ductility dip cracking. The effects of different alloying elements on the hot cracking resistance of various materials are shown in the second chapter and, as a special metallurgical effect, the initiation of stress corrosion cracking at hot cracks has been highlighted. The third chapter outlines how numerical analyses and other modelling techniques can be utilized to describe hot cracking phenomena and how such results might contribute to the explanation of the mechanisms. Homocysteine
Homocysteine is a non-proteinogenic α-amino acid. It is a homologue of the amino acid cysteine, differing by an additional methylene bridge (-CH2-). It is biosynthesized from methionine by the removal of its terminal methyl group. In the body, Homocysteine (HCY) can be recycled into methionine or converted into cysteine with the aid of certain B-vitamins. A high level of Homocysteine in the blood (hyperhomocysteinemia) makes a person more prone to endothelial cell injury, which leads to inflammation in the blood vessels, which in turn may lead to atherogenesis, which can result in ischemic injury. Therefore, hyperhomocysteinemia is a possible risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD). Coronary artery disease occurs when an atherosclerotic plaque blocks blood flow to the coronary arteries, which supply the heart with oxygenated blood.

High performance embedded architectures and compilers ; 1st International Conference, HiPEAC 2005, Barcelona, Spain, November 17-18, 2005, Proceedings
The ProgramCommittee received a total of 84 submissions; only 17 were selected for presentation as full-length papers and another one as an invited paper. Each paper was rigorously reviewed by three ProgramCommittee members and at least one external referee. Many reviewers spent a great amount of e?ort to provide detailed feedback. In many cases, such feedback along with constructive shepherding resulted in dramatic improvement in the quality of accepted papers. The names of the Program Committee m- bers and the referees are listed in the proceedings. The net result of this team e?ort is that the symposium proceedings include outstanding contributions by authors from nine countries in three continents. In addition to paper presentations, this ?rst HiPEAC conference featured two keynotes delivered by prominent researchers from industry and academia.
