Le dépistage du cancer du sein : un enjeu de santé publique = Breast cancer screening: a public health issue
Fifteen years after the first experiments, the breast cancer screening program was rolled out in France in 2004. It is aimed at more than eight million women aged 50 to 74. Public health action on such a scale is exemplary in Europe and especially in France where the health system is not centralized. The new edition of this book takes stock of the current state of the program and its initial results. It updates technical and radiological aspects, assessment indicators, communication and forensic problems and finally the progress of foreign programs. The history of the French program is detailed from the 1990s until 2006, with the publication of the latest version of the specifications by the Directorate General of Health. The short and medium term objectives are re-specified: to increase the participation of women, to retain them and to further improve the quality of practices. The challenge is to combine the performance of screening and therapeutic management to finally achieve a clear reduction in mortality, which has remained stable for twenty years.

Each year, cervical cancer kills approximately 1,000 people in France, making it the fifth leading cause of cancer death and the eighth most common cancer among women. While eradicating cervical cancer is not possible, a national screening campaign should significantly reduce its incidence. This campaign should be based, in particular, on the systematic use of Pap smears. Conventional Pap smears have already reduced the number of invasive cancers by more than 50%. Improving them requires optimizing their sensitivity. This book details the natural history of cervical cancer, its incidence and mortality, and the various aspects of screening: general principles, the French screening program, the different types of Pap smears, the role and contribution of the HPV test, the management of abnormal Pap smears, the role of colposcopy, and the follow-up of treated women. It is intended for all those involved in this screening : specialist interns and gynecologists, pathologists and biologists, public health physicians, but also general practitioners whose role in screening is privileged since they are at the forefront of medical demand.
Le complicazioni neurologiche in oncologia = Neurological complications in oncology
This volume, both necessary and new in the panorama of Italian medical literature, acknowledges this and presents an updated and complete review of the pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous system associated with tumors and their treatment. The purpose of the volume is to present an integrated approach between specialists that must see the neurologist and the oncologist in dialogue, and able to develop a new super-specialized clinical capacity in neuro-oncology. Many experts have contributed to its preparation by sharing knowledge on topics ranging from metastatic complications, to those of surgical cancer therapy, radio- and chemo-therapy, paraneoplastic syndromes, pain therapy, delirium and the affective alterations associated with the disease. Particular attention is of course paid to recent data both with the contribution of hormone therapy and targeted therapies. Finally, the symptomatic treatments and especially the psychological care of these patients are not forgotten.

Localized tumors are discovered at an earlier stage. The concept of active surveillance emerges. Minimally invasive treatments such as cryotherapy or radiofrequency for selected cases are now available. The indications for elective open partial nephrectomy are expanding and laparoscopic and then robotic partial nephrectomy are being evaluated.

The authors discuss three important questions: First, whether the observed regularities are based on strict "laws of nature" that hold rigorously and without any exception. Finally, on the basis of these investigations the authors treat the ambitious and intricate third question, why the laws of nature hold. Philosophy of logic and language, and of meaning and communication are central to this volume. The discussion of these issues involves analytical approaches, including semantics and semiotics, philosophy of science, mathematical logic, phenomenology, hermeneutics and some aspects of philosophical anthropology and aesthetics. Philosophy of the Absolute also belongs to this broad repertoire of philosophical problems and disciplines. A number of problems and viewpoints derive from the metaphysical system; any relativistic view on ethical values, for instance, makes sense in relation to some absolute. Metaphysical system building may have come to an end, but after all it belongs to philosophy to remind us of our past.
