Salyut - The First Space Station : Triumph and Tragedy

This remarkable book is a unique insight into the people involved in the development of the Salyut space station and the crews assigned to operate it. It describes the rotation between the crews, analyses the decision to send the back-up crew on Soyuz 11 and recounts the intrigues and difficult relationships between all the personalities involved - politicians, CKBEM managers, designers, generals and cosmonauts. Biographies of the Soyuz 11 cosmonauts are published for the first time in English and the longest manned space mission of the time is described before Grujica Ivanovich gives a unique summary of the most tragic day in the Soviet/Russian manned space program. An investigation into the cause of the tragic deaths of the Soyuz 11 cosmonauts precedes a description of the post-Salyut era, showing how the legacy of the first space station has survived for decades.

Road Pricing, the Economy and the Environment

Economic growth and globalisation create traffic growth, leading to congestion, which again increases travel times and costs. Traffic growth also increases CO2 emissions, air pollution, accidents, and noise. So, clearly there is a need to manage traffic, taking into account that there is a need for transportation; hence it cannot be restricted without costs. Road pricing, where motorists pay for driving on specific roads, is an instrument that may efficiently reduce the negative impacts. But despite technological development and the efforts of the EU, it is still not widely used. Apparently, more research-based knowledge about the positive and negative consequences of road pricing is required. This volume is a collection of research papers on the use of road pricing. The focus is on passenger transport, and the papers cover a wide range of approaches, including theoretical modelling and empirical studies of road pricing experience from different cities.

RNA Trafficking and Nuclear Structure Dynamics

Over the last few years remarkable progress has been accomplished with respect to our understanding of nuclear structure and trafficking. This volume concentrates on aspects that involve or are of relevance to RNA and RNPs. Topics include fundamental advances and current problems in the structural organization of different subnuclear compartments: chromatin, nucleolus and perinucleolar compartment, Cajal bodies and gems, speckles containing splicing factors, as well as the PML bodies characteristic of ProMyelocytic Leukemia. It also describes recent progress in the dynamic aspects of RNA trafficking and in the latest technologies for live cell imaging of mRNA. The major general message of this volume is that nuclear structure is much more dynamic than previously anticipated.

Reviews of Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology

Virus proliferation depends on the successful recruitment of host cellular components for their own replication, protein synthesis, and virion assembly. In the course of virus particle production a large number of proteins are synthesized in a relatively short time, whereby protein folding can become a limiting step. Most viruses therefore need cellular chaperones during their life cycle. In addition to their own protein folding problems viruses need to interfere with cellular processes such as signal transduction, cell cycle regulation and induction of apoptosis in order to create a favorable environment for their proliferation and to avoid premature cell death. Chaperones are involved in the control of these cellular processes and some viruses reprogram their host cell by interacting with them. Hsp70 chaperones, as central components of the cellular chaperone network, are frequently recruited by viruses. This review focuses on the function of Hsp70 chaperones at the different stages of the viral life cycle emphasizing mechanistic aspects
