Advances in Natural Computation ; Vol. 4222 ; 2nd International Conference, ICNC 2006, Xi'an, China, September 24-28, 2006, Proceedings, Part II
constitutethe proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Natural Computation (ICNC 2006), jointly held with the 3rd International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Discovery, ICNC-FSKD 2006 featured the most up-to-date research results in com- tational algorithms inspired from nature, including biological, ecological, and physical systems. It is an exciting and emerging interdisciplinary area in which a wide rangeof techniques and methods arebeing studied for dealing with large, complex, and dynamic problems. The joint conferences also promoted cro- fertilization over these exciting and yet closely-related areas, which had a s- nifcant impact on the advancement of these important technologies. Specifc areas included neural computation, quantum computation, evolutionarycom- tation, DNA computation, fuzzy computation, granular computation, artifcial life, etc., with innovative applications to knowledge discovery, fnance, ope- tions research, and more. In addition to the large number of submitted papers, we were blessed with the presence of six renowned keynote speakers.

PCM 2006 again brought together researchers, developers, practitioners, and educators in the ?eld of multimedia from around the world. Both theoretical breakthroughs and practical systems were presented at the conference. There were sessions from multimedia retrieval to multimedia coding to multimedia security,coveringa wide spectrum of multimedia research. We received 755 submissions and the number was the largest among all the PCMs.the additional reviewers who generously spent many hours. The many useful comments provided by the reviewing process are very useful to authors’ current and future research.

This is a new meeting, it has about 200 attendees from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA. The 2nd IFOM-IEO international meeting on cancer will provide a forum in which the world’s leading cancer researchers and young scientists will discuss the latest advances in molecular oncology. This volume is a compilation of articles that summarize the most recent results in meteor, meteoroid and related fields presented at the Meteoroids 2007 conference held at the impressive CosmoCaixa Science Museum in Barcelona, Spain. The conference took place between the 11th and the 15th of June and was organized by the Institute of Space Sciences (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC) and the Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC). Researchers in meteor science and supporting fields representing more than 20 countries participated at this international conference.

It was with pleasure that we hosted PAKDD 2006 in Singapore again, since the inaugural PAKDD conference was held in Singapore in 1997. In view of this, and following the success of the five previous PAKDD conferences, the sixth Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD 2002) aimed to provide a forum for the sharing of original research results, innovative ideas, state-of-the-art developments, and implementation experiences in knowledge discovery and data mining among researchers in academic and industrial organizations. Much work went into preparing a program of high quality. We received 128 submissions.

In recent years, a significant interest developed regarding the problem of constructing ontologies. Of particular interest have been ontologies that could be re-used in a number of ways and could possibly be shared across diff- ent users as well as domains. The Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshops (PKAW) have a long tradition in providing a forum for researchers to exchange the latest ideas on the topic. Parti- pants come from all over the world but with a focus on the Pacific Rim region. PKAW is one of three international knowledge acquisition workshop series held in the Pacific-Rim, Canada and Europe over the last two decades. The previous Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshop, PKAW 2004, had a strong emphasis on inc- mental knowledge acquisition, machine learning, neural networks and data mining.
Advances in Integrated Soil Fertility Research in sub-Saharan Africa : Challenges and Opportunities
Food insecurity is a central concern and a fundamental challenge for human welfare and economic growth in Africa. Low agricultural production, results in low incomes, poor nutrition, vulnerability to risks and lack of empowerment. Land degradation and soil fertility depletion are considered the major threats to food security and natural resource conservation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Investments in technology, policy and institutional reforms are needed to increase agricultural productivity to ensure food security and sustained national economies. Past research has generated numerous soil fertility management technologies which if adopted could propel the African continent out of the poverty trap. However, these technologies have had little, if any, impact due to low adoption by the smallholder farmers.
