Targeted metallo-drugs : Design, development, and mode of action
Inspired by the clinical success of cisplatin as a leading anticancer drug but mindful of the shortcomings associated with its use including dose-limiting toxic side effects and acquired or intrinsic drug resistance, scientists across the globe have been endeavoring to identify new metallo-drugs for therapeutic exploitation. This has led to innovative metallo-drug candidates that (i) enhance cancer cell selectivity, thus reducing toxic side effects, and/or (ii) possess new modes of action to improve efficacy and also target resistance pathways. Survie des patients atteints de cancer en France = Survival of cancer patients in France
The Francim network brings together all the French cancer registries. It has set up an observatory for cancerous pathologies in France, the purpose of which is to provide the community with epidemiological indicators useful for the knowledge and management of this pathology, in conjunction with various institutional partners. A first output of this observatory was to provide estimates of the incidence of cancer in France in 2000. Its second output is reported in this work, and concerns the survival of cancer patients, as it could be estimated. from all cancer cases recorded from 1989 to 1997 in 20 French departmental registers. To achieve these objectives, the network joined forces with the biostatistics service of the civil hospices of Lyon, which provided statistical analysis of the data collected by the various registers. The procedures that have been put in place for the different phases of this work can be implemented on a regular basis, for subsequent estimates. They also lend themselves to the implementation of more in-depth studies that are necessary for certain cancers. These so-called “population” data usefully complement the results of studies carried out in the field of clinical research. An additional tool for epidemiological cancer surveillance is therefore now available in France, thanks to the support of the National Cancer League.
Surface and Interfacial Organometallic Chemistry and Catalysis
Heterogeneous catalysis has been essential to the development of efficient chemical processes for more than a century, and this field has been traditionally part of the solid state chemistry and surface science communities. The design of better catalysts has raised the following questions: "what is the structure of the active sites?" and "how to control their nature?" The necessary need to develop more sustainable chemical processes and the success of homogeneous catalysis relying on molecular organometallic chemistry has led the community of molecular chemists to investigate the preparation of single-site heterogeneous catalysts. The authors discuss the molecular design, the preparation, the characterisation and the catalytic applications of well-defined oxides and metal particles. The readers will acquire a molecular understanding of heterogeneous catalysis, which will help them develop a critical view and which will attract them to study this fascinating field.
Stress and immunity
Many people have experienced the connection between stress and getting sick. Colds, influenza, herpes and allergies seem worse when we are severely stressed at work or in the home. Others are never sick until they go on vacation (that is, after the stress is over), and then they spend the whole time fighting the virus. Because of intrinsic connections like these, many researchers are today exploring whether (and how) stress and illness are actually linked. One specific focus of this research is to study the effects of stress on the immune systems; after all, if stress affects immunity, that would be one way in which stress could contribute to illness. The function of the immune system is to protect us from organisms that cause disease, and from other materials that would be harmful to the body. Cells of the immune system (i.e., white blood cells) circulate throughout the body in the blood and are also located in various organs, including the bone marrow, thymus, lymph nodes and spleen. There are a number of different kinds of white blood cells, but the most important in this context are lymphocytes.

The search for optimal solutions pervades our daily lives. From the scientific point of view, optimization procedures play an eminent role whenever exact solutions to a given problem are not at hand or a compromise has to be sought, e.g. to obtain a sufficiently accurate solution within a given amount of time. Understanding bird migrations may therefore significantly contribute towards understanding of the disease epidemiology, however most conventional approaches to trace WMW migrations are based on capturing, tagging (mostly ringing or GPS devices) and their re-capturing to link the departure and arrival places.
