Gender, Health and Ageing : European Perspectives on Life Course, Health Issues and Social Challenges
The objective of this book is to provide an overview of gender, health and ageing. Important theoretical concepts, such as life course and "Lebenslagen" in old age, or differences in men's health, are introduced. It is increasingly important to build a European basis of knowledge, to conduct discussions on European research findings, and to develop European research frameworks. In this volume, central theoretical debates on gender impacts on life course and old-age health, and vital issues of health research in the context of gender and old age are introduced. Specific aspects, such as the impact of gender and age on cardiovascular health, elder abuse and mental health, or care between gender relations, gender roles and gender constructs, are pointed out.
From War to Peace in the Balkans, the Middle East and Ukraine

Framing global mathematics : The international mathematical union between theorems and politics
This book is about the shaping of international relations in mathematics over the last two hundred years. It focusses on institutions and organizations that were created to frame the international dimension of mathematical research. Today, striking evidence of globalized mathematics is provided by countless international meetings and the worldwide repository ArXiv. The text follows the sinuous path that was taken to reach this state, from the long nineteenth century, through the two wars, to the present day. International cooperation in mathematics was well established by 1900, centered in Europe. The first International Mathematical Union, IMU, founded in 1920 and disbanded in 1932, reflected above all the trauma of WW I. Since 1950 the current IMU has played an increasing role in defining mathematical excellence, as is shown both in the historical narrative and by analyzing data about the International Congresses of Mathematicians. For each of the three periods discussed, interactions are explored between world politics, the advancement of scientific infrastructures, and the inner evolution of mathematics. Readers will thus take a new look at the place of mathematics in world culture, and how international organizations can make a difference. Aimed at mathematicians, historians of science, scientists, and the scientifically inclined general public.
Fractures du genou = Knee fractures
Provides a comprehensive yet practical overview of the management of knee fractures and their complications. The editorial team comprises specialists from France, Switzerland, Belgium, the United States, and Ireland, many of whom are members of the AO group. Imaging strategies, assessment, classification, and anatomical variations are reviewed for each anatomical location. All therapeutic approaches are discussed without exception: conventional implants, intramedullary nailing, minimally invasive techniques, including the role of external fixation, and newer technologies such as the LISS. These approaches are subjected to critical analysis to identify the best options based on the indications and individual circumstances. The patellar apparatus is addressed in its functional unity. Postoperative management, influenced by functional prognosis, is also covered, as is the management of malunion, stiffness, and other complications. Finally, very specific problems are discussed, such as pediatric injuries, patellectomies, periprosthetic fractures, often complex projectile injuries, the role of immediate arthroplasty and massive grafts, but also associated injuries which sometimes have a heavy impact on the final prognosis.
Forefoot Reconstruction
For a long time, forefoot surgery had many disadvantages including a painful postoperative period and recurrence of deformities. New techniques – notably Scarf, the first metatarsal osteotomy and the Weil osteotomy of the lesser metatarsal – provide a significant improvement in the treatment of static forefoot disorders. The great toe osteotomy has also been greatly improved. Since 1991, the author has introduced these techniques in many countries, while developing and studying the corresponding implants and the postoperative period. He has also developed surgical management techniques that bridge these different osteotomies. More than 1000 surgeons around the world are using these techniques, which are now widely taught. In this second edition of the book the general presentation is clearer and more pleasant and many pictures have been replaced. Several topics are emphasized, notably the great toe proximal phalanx osteotomy, the joint preservative surgery in severe forefoot disorders, including revision after failed bunionectomy and rheumatoid forefoot following the "ms” point for an accurate and effective metatarsal shortening. Lastly, new procedures are exposed, particularly in Claw toe and hammer with the PIP plantar release and the surgery of the middle phalanx and also the Weil osteotomy of the first metatarsal in hallux limitus.

European water law and hydropolitics : An inquiry into the resilience of transboundary water governance in the European Union
provides the first comprehensive assessment of the various issues faced by countries in the European Union, where progressing climate change and urbanization pose significant cooperative challenges in a large number of river basins. Conducting a thorough analysis of the intricate web of EU water governance, it reveals that the hydropolitical stability of the European Union is already at risk. European citizenship after Brexit : Freedom of movement and rights of residence
This book investigates European citizenship after Brexit, in light of the functionalist theory of citizenship. No matter its shape, Brexit will impact significantly on what has been labelled as one of the major achievements of EU integration: Citizenship of the Union. For the first time an automatic and collective lapse of status is observed. It is a form of involuntary loss of citizenship en masse, imposed by the automatic workings of the law on EU citizens of exclusively British nationality. It does not however create statelessness and it is likely to be tolerated under international law. This loss of citizenship is connected to a reduction of rights, affecting not solely the former Union citizens but also second country nationals in the United Kingdom and their family members.
