Sodium Channels, Pain, and Analgesia

Sodium channels confer excitability on neurons in nociceptive pathways and exhibit neuronal tissue specific and injury regulated expression. This volume provides recent insights into the control of expression, functioning and membrane trafficking of nervous system sodium channels and reviews why sodium channel sub-types are potentially important drug targets in the treatment of pain. The roles of sodium channels in dental and visceral pain are also addressed. The emerging role of sodium channel Nav1.3 in neuropathic states is another important theme. The final chapter highlights the functional diversity of sodium channels in part provided by post-transcriptional processing and the insights into sodium channel function that are being provided by tissue specific and inducible gene knock-out technology.

Smart Driver Training Simulation: Save Money. Prevent.

Brings together the basic principles of education and training, modeling, task description and analysis, and the pros and cons of simulation as a training method. It describes the method used to design appropriate teaching and training programs and presents a taxonomy of the main components of the simulator technology. As an example, an interlinked training program which has been carried out is presented, with vehicles and simulators for professional drivers. This is followed by several advanced training programs which have also been tested. These simulator training courses for professional drivers are based on optimized simulator-specific teaching and training matter, covering an economic, anticipatory driving technique as well as self-control, i.e. frustration-resistant driving.

Sleep Neurology : A Comprehensive Guide to Basic and Clinical Aspects

This practical text provides knowledge of the basic neuroscience of sleep and sleep disorders as they interrelate with various neurologic conditions.Chapters in the first section cover neural networks involved in normal sleep processes, including dreams and memory. Also discussed are how these neural networks interact in various sleep stages and sleep disorders, such as sleep related movement disorders. The book's second section explores the pathophysiology of sleep disorders in the spectrum of neurologic conditions in both adults and children. This includes sleep changes in patients with dementia, seizures, headaches, and stroke, and other common neurologic disorders.

Skins, Envelopes, and Enclosures : Concepts for Designing Building Exteriors

Illuminates the theory and techniques of assembling exteriors. Six chapters organized by wall types, from hand-set monolithic walls to digitally fabricated curtain walls, each have a material focus section to help you understand their intrinsic properties so that you can decide which will best keep the weather out of your building. Examples from the ancient world, including the Pyramids and the Great Wall, through a range of renowned modern architects, such as Studio Gang, Sauerbruch Hutton, Herzog and deMeuron, and Rafael Moneo, illustrate how significant works in the history of architecture explored innovative use of materials – stone, brick, concrete, glass, and aluminium. Along the way, principles of construction from masonry and basic framing through ever more sophisticated envelope systems address classic problems presented by gravity, wind, rain, and sun with studies of lateral forces, building movements and materials that bridge the gaps in between them.

Skeletal muscle stem cells : Methods and protocols

Looks at the latest technologies and methods--combined with new genetic tools available in animal models--used in this constantly evolving field. The chapters in this book are organized into three sections: Section one covers muscle stem cells and progenitor cells; Section Two discusses animal models for muscle stem cells and regeneration; and Section Three explores bioinformatics and imaging analysis for muscle stem cells. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.

Simulation Approaches in Transportation Analysis : Recent Advances and Challenges

Focuses on the latest advanced research on modeling as well as applications of transport simulation, including simulation of vehicle movements on the road, dynamic simulation of traffic flow on transport networks, and simulation of the movement of people in an urban area. Models from the three continents of Europe, North America, and Asia are discussed in detail. Research issues and future directions of transport simulation development are systematically addressed. It is the first book to thoroughly discuss global developments and the broad issues of transport simulation. The book will be useful for researchers and graduate students to understand the application of simulation in transport analysis and future research needs. Practitioners will find the book useful for practical issues such as the applicability of simulation methods, their reproducibility, and output interpretation.

Services Liberalisation in the Internal Market

Liberalisation of cross-border service provision developed into one of the most controversial European integration issues. In the public debate – that for the first time provided a glimpse of a European public in nuce – in particular the first draft of the regulation was subject to severe criticism, being often called the "Frankenstein directive", the transposition of which inevitably would lead to a breakdown of the so called "European Social Model", a term that was also coined during the debate. On the other hand, the defenders of the concept promised the creation of jobs without number, if the Directive were realised.
