A series of short papers published in Intensive Care Medicine since 2002 under the heading Physiologic Notes attempts to capture the essence of the physiologic perspectives that underpin both our understanding of disease and response to therapy. Tis present volume combines the complete list of these Physiologic Notes up until July 2006 with the ass o ciated review articles over the same in terval that also address edthese central issues.

This book examines how marine organisms from bacteria to invertebrates and plants use chemicals to communicate and defend themselves. Anorectal Malformations in Children : Embryology, Diagnosis, Surgical Treatment, Follow-up

Special attention is given to the new surgical techniques posterior sagittal anorectal plasty (PSARP), urogenital sinue advancement, and laparoscopy. The results of an international workshop of 26 international authorities on congenital malformations of the organs of the pelvis and perineum are presented. The new classification proposed at the Krickenberg Conference will enable future studies comparing the types and the results of treatment of anorectal malformations.

Analyse céphalométrique fonctionnelle et esthétique de profil = Functional and aesthetic cephalometric profile analysis
The complexity of the craniofacial architecture explains the multiplicity of cephalometric analyzes, too often based on points without phylogenetic, ontogenetic, anatomical or biomechanical justification. The value of a reliable and rapid analysis designed from indisputable fundamental foundations is essential. It enables the use of cephalometry in the daily practice of orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons and facial plastic surgeons. This functional and aesthetic cephalometric analysis is carried out from fourteen anatomical points, ten bony points and four skin points, which all have in common that they are exo-basicranial. This analysis is easy to understand and use. It only takes five minutes to be learned and five minutes to be traced (fifteen seconds if it is computerized). The resulting results are reliable. The functional and aesthetic analysis is developed through four chapters. The first is devoted to the fundamental bases, the second to the analysis itself and to clinical cases, the third to the comparative study of different cephalometric analyzes, and finally the fourth chapter revisits the work of Arne Björk.
An ecological and societal approach to biological control
Biological control is among the most promising methods for control of pests (including vectors), diseases and weeds. In this book ecological and societal aspects are for the first time treated together. In an ecological approach the aim is to evaluate the significance of certain biological properties like biodiversity and natural habitats. Alzheimer : 100 Years and Beyond
Few medical or scientific addresses have so unmistakeably made history as the presentation delivered by Alois Alzheimer on November 4th, 1906 in Tübingen. The celebratory event, "Alzheimer 100 Years and Beyond" organized on the initiative of the Alzheimer community in Germany and worldwide, in collaboration with the Fondation Ipsen, at the very site of the original lecture, namely the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of Tübingen in Germany from November 2nd to 5th, 2006, was the highlight of the Alzheimer Year. Over the last century of Alzheimer research (1906-2006), remarkable progress has been achieved. Most of the authors of the major discoveries and the people involved in research in this field will present, during the meeting and in this volume, the pioneering research explaining the conditions under which they were conducted. Alternative Splicing and Disease
Splicing of primary RNA transcript, i.e. removal of introns and joining of exons to produce mature mRNAs competent for translation into proteins, is a quasi-systematic step of gene expression in higher organisms. However, this process is not unequivocal but can follow alternate pathways. Alternative splicing of a given transcript can therefore yield several distinct mRNAs encoding as many different proteins. Its full biological significance has not been appreciated until it was recognized that alternative splicing is so general as to affect about 75% of all human genes. Therefore, alternative splicing not only vastly increases protein diversity but also offers numerous opportunities for aberrant splicing events with pathological consequences.
Allelopathy : A Physiological Process with Ecological Implications
This book provides the reader relevant information about actual knowledge about the process of allelopathy, covering all aspects from the molecular to the ecological level. Special relevance is given to the physiological and ecophysiological aspects of allelopathy.
