Tool and Object : A History and Philosophy of Category Theory

The book is first of all a history of category theory from the beginnings to A. Grothendieck and F.W. Lawvere. Category theory was an important conceptual tool in 20th century mathematics whose influence on some mathematical subdisciplines (above all algebraic topology and algebraic geometry) is analyzed. Category theory also has an important philosophical aspect: on the one hand its set-theoretical foundation is less obvious than for other mathematical theories, and on the other hand it unifies conceptually a large part of modern mathematics and may therefore be considered as somewhat fundamental itself. The role of this philosophical aspect in the historical development is the second focus of the book.

Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is based on a set of ideas and theorems quite distinct from those governing ground-state DFT, but emphasizing similar techniques. Today, the use of TDDFT is rapidly growing in many areas of physics, chemistry and materials sciences where direct solution of the Schrödinger equation is too demanding. This is the first comprehensive, textbook-style introduction to the relevant basics and techniques.

Tigri e Teoremi : Scrivere teatro e scienza = Tigers and Theorems : Writing theater and science

From science according to Popper and Toulmin to theater according to Morteo and Brecht, a path is built between the two disciplines that leads to an original intertwining between the two fields: the emotion that a theatrical performance provokes in us can be compared to the pleasure that a theorem proved flawlessly. The purpose of the book is to teach how to write "Theater and Science". Seeing the curtain open in front of one's own scientific play, written with rigor after having researched and analyzed and compared the sources. The secret of this writing lies in two directives that work well both in science and in theater: e.

Thin Films of Soft Matter

A detailed overview and comprehensive analysis of the main theoretical and experimental advances on free surface thin film and jet flows of soft matter is given. At the theoretical front the book outlines the basic equations and boundary conditions and the derivation of low-dimensional models for the evolution of the free surface. Such models include long-wave expansions and equations of the boundary layer type and are analyzed via linear stability analysis, weakly nonlinear theories and strongly nonlinear analysis including construction of stationary periodic and solitary wave and similarity solutions. At the experimental front a variety of very recent experimental developments is outlined and the link between theory and experiments is illustrated. Such experiments include spreading drops and bubbles, imbibitions, singularity formation at interfaces and experimental characterization of thin films using atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry and contact angle measurements and analysis of patterns using Minkowski functionals.

Thermodynamics and Fluctuations far from Equilibrium

Sals with the formulation of the thermodynamics of chemical and other systems far from equilibrium, including connections to fluctuations. It contains applications to non-equilibrium stationary states and approaches to such states, systems with multiple stationary states, stability and equi-stability conditions, reaction diffusion systems, transport properties, and electrochemical systems. The theoretical treatment is complemented by experimental results to substantiate the formulation. Dissipation and efficiency are analyzed in autonomous and externally forced reactions, including several biochemical systems.

Thermal Transport for Applications in Micro/Nanomachining

The focus of this monograph is on thermal transport modeling at time and length scales ranging from micro- to nanoscale levels. It is intended to serve as a handy reference for students and researchers who work on numerical and theoretical aspects of thermal transport phenomena at micro- and nanoscales.

Thermal processes using attosecond laser pulses : When time matters

Contains a study of the thermal processes initiated by attosecond laser pulses. Considering the existence of the experimental evidence for the trains of the attosecond laser pulses, we developed the theoretical framework for attophysics, i.e. physics of phenomena with time duration in the attosecond domain. This time domain is concerned with phenomena whose duration is much shorter than the relaxation time for atomic, molecular and nanoparticles scales.

Theory of the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment

The theory of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is at the cutting edge of current research in particle physics. It includes multiloop calculations in both QED and electroweak theory, precision low-energy hadron physics, isospin violations and scattering of light by light. Any deviation between the theoretical prediction and the experimental value might be interpreted as a signal of an as-yet-unknown new physics. This book provides a comprehensive review of the theory of the muon anomalous magnetic moment.

Theory of Stochastic Differential Equations with Jumps and Applications : Mathematical and Analytical Techniques with Applications to Engineering

This book is written for people who are interested in stochastic differential equations (SDEs) and their applications. It shows how to introduce and define the Ito integrals, to establish Ito’s differential rule (the so-called Ito formula), to solve the SDEs, and to establish Girsanov’s theorem and obtain weak solutions of SDEs. It also shows how to solve the filtering problem, to establish the martingale representation theorem, to solve the option pricing problem in a financial market, and to obtain the famous Black-Scholes formula, along with other results.

Theory of Probability and Random Processes

A one-year course in probability theory and the theory of random processes, taught at Princeton University to undergraduate and graduate students, forms the core of the content of this bookIt is structured in two parts: the first part providing a detailed discussion of Lebesgue integration, Markov chains, random walks, laws of large numbers, limit theorems, and their relation to Renormalization Group theory. The second part includes the theory of stationary random processes, martingales, generalized random processes, Brownian motion, stochastic integrals, and stochastic differential equations. One section is devoted to the theory of Gibbs random fields.

Theory of Evolutionary Computation : Recent Developments in Discrete Optimization

Reports on recent developments in the theory of evolutionary computation, or more generally the domain of randomized search heuristics. It starts with two chapters on mathematical methods that are often used in the analysis of randomized search heuristics, followed by three chapters on how to measure the complexity of a search heuristic: black-box complexity, a counterpart of classical complexity theory in black-box optimization; parameterized complexity, aimed at a more fine-grained view of the difficulty of problems; and the fixed-budget perspective, which answers the question of how good a solution will be after investing a certain computational budget. The book then describes theoretical results on three important questions in evolutionary computation: how to profit from changing the parameters during the run of an algorithm; how evolutionary algorithms cope with dynamically changing or stochastic environments; and how population diversity influences performance. Finally, the book looks at three algorithm classes that have only recently become the focus of theoretical work: estimation-of-distribution algorithms; artificial immune systems; and genetic programming.

Theory of Defects in Semiconductors

Semiconductor science and technology is the art of defect engineering. The theoretical modeling of defects has improved dramatically over the past decade. This volume presents a coherent and detailed description of the field.

Theory of Concentrated Vortices : An Introduction

This book presents comprehensive and authoritative coverage of the wide field of concentrated vortices observed in nature and technique. The methods for research of their kinematics and dynamics are considered. Special attention is paid to the flows with helical symmetry. The authors have described models of vortex structures used for interpretation of experimental data which serve as a ground for development of theoretical and numerical approaches to vortex investigation. Achievements in the fields of stability analysis, waves on vortices and vortex breakdown are also presented.

Theory of Chemical Reaction Dynamics

The book represents a snapshot of the current status of research in reaction dynamics, focusing especially on accurate time-dependent and time-independent methods of quantum scattering, treatment of non-adiabatic processes, studies of associative and inelastic collisions, calculation of potential surfaces.the experiments now offer detailed scattering information for theory to explain and rationalize. At the same time, advances in computing and networking technologies for heterogeneous and grid environments afford new possibilities for theoretical studies of chemical reactivity. As a consequence, calculation of atom+diatom reactions has become routine, accurate methods have been developed to describe reactions in tetra-atomic systems, nonadiabatic reactions are being studied in simultaneous experimental and theoretical efforts, and statistical theories of unimolecular reaction dynamics are applied to systems that were a mystery a few years ago.
