Biometric User Authentication for IT Security : From Fundamentals to Handwriting

Biometric User Authentication for IT Security: From Fundamentals to Handwriting conveys general principals of passive (physiological trait like fingerprint, iris, face) and active (learned and trained behavior like voice, handwriting and gait) biometric recognition techniques to the reader. This professional book, unlike other publications in this area which concentrate on passive schemes, reflects a more comprehensive analysis of one particular active biometric technique: handwriting. Aspects which are thoroughly discussed include sensor characteristic dependency, attack scenarios, and the generation of cryptographic keys from handwriting.

Assessment of the fate and effects of toxic agents on water resources

Like all limited and vulnerable resources, water has become one of the potential targets of terrorists. Coastal lagoons are especially vulnerable as they are densely populated centers of commerce and/or tourism. This volume addresses the basic scientific concepts that must be integrated by decisionmakers to minimize damages and optimize recovery operations in the aftermath of such an attack. Scientists from many disciplines including water resource management, hydrodynamics, aquatic ecology and social science combine their expertise in an effort to assess and model emergency scenarios for coastal lagoon systems. This case study uses existing numerical models such as-EFCD, WASP and AQUATOX are used to demonstrate how to optimize rapid response and decision-making

Asias New Institutional Architecture : Evolving Structures for Managing Trade, Financial, and Security Relations

This book investigates the origins and evolution of Asia’s new institutional architecture in trade, finance, and security from both a theoretical and empirical perspective. The traditional institutional equilibrium in Asia has come under heavy strain in the "post triple shocks period" - the post-Cold War, the post-financial crisis of 1997-98, and the post-9-11 attacks. The new dynamics of rivalry and cooperation among states at both the intraregional and transregional levels is now shaping a new institutional architecture. Political and business leaders from Northeast and Southeast Asia interact with each other more frequently. South Asia’s participation in the rest of Asia in recent years is truly impressive. As we show, the future institutional trajectory of Asia is still open, but we believe that the book provides a timely examination of key shifts in the region. In doing so, our hope is to provide policymakers and analysts with an institutional road map for the future.

Artificial intelligence and national security

Analyses the implications of the technical, legal, ethical and privacy challenges as well as challenges for human rights and civil liberties regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) and National Security. It also offers solutions that can be adopted to mitigate or eradicate these challenges wherever possible. As a general-purpose, dual-use technology, AI can be deployed for both good and evil. The use of AI is increasingly becoming of paramount importance to the governments mission to keep their nations safe. However, the design, development and use of AI for national security poses a wide range of legal, ethical, moral and privacy challenges. This book explores national security uses for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Western Democracies and its malicious use. This book also investigates the legal, political, ethical, moral, privacy and human rights implications of the national security uses of AI in the aforementioned democracies. It illustrates how AI for national security purposes could threaten most individual fundamental rights, and how the use of AI in digital policing could undermine user human rights and privacy.

This volume (LNCS 3989) contains papers presented in the academic track. ACNS was set a high standard when it was initiated in 2003. There has been a steady improvement in the quality of its program in the past 4 years: ACNS 2003 (Kunming, China), ACNS 2004 (Yellow Mountain, China), ACNS 2005 (New York, USA), ACNS 2006 (Singapore). The average acc- tance rate is kept at around 16%. We wish to receive the continued support from the community of cryptographyand security worldwide to further improve its quality and make ACNS one of the leading conferences.

Anticoagulants and coronary artery disease

Blood thinners are medicines that help blood flow smoothly through your veins and arteries. There are two. The first is called anticoagulants (Warfarin, Heparin, Enoxaparin) and The second class of blood thinners is called antiplatelet (Aspirin, Ticagrelor , Clopidogrel). . Coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle. Coronary artery disorder or disease can have serious implications by reducing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle. This can lead to a heart attack and possibly death. Atherosclerosis. Medications to reduce the risk of blood clots, such as anticoagulants (including aspirin) and antiplatelet. , in particular aspirin, are effective in preventing platelet activation and thus thrombus formation and Clopidogrel is an inhibitor of platelet activation.

Advances in Information and Computer Security ; 1st International Workshop on Security, IWSEC 2006, Kyoto, Japan, October 23-24, 2006, Proceedings

this year in Kyoto and to publish the proceedings as a volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. The workshop was our ?rst trial in that two major academic society groups on security in Japan, viz. ISEC and CSEC, jointly organized it; ISEC is a te- nical group on information security of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE), and CSEC is a special interest group on computer security of the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ). It was Ryoichi Sasaki, the former head of CSEC, who proposed holding such an international workshop in Japan for the ?rst time, two years ago. The two groups supported his idea and started organizing the workshop. CSEC has its annual domestic symposium, the Computer Security Symposium (CSS), in - tober for three days, and we decided to organize the workshop prior to CSS this year.

Advances in Digital Forensics III ; IFIP International Conference on Digital Forensics, National Center for Forensic Science, Orlando Florida, January 28-January 31, 2007

Digital forensics deals with the acquisition, preservation, examination, analysis and presentation of electronic evidence. Networked computing, wireless communications and portable electronic devices have expanded the role of digital forensics beyond traditional computer crime investigations. Practically every crime now involves some aspect of digital evidence; digital forensics provides the techniques and tools to articulate this evidence. Digital forensics also has myriad intelligence applications. Furthermore, it has a vital role in information assurance -- investigations of security breaches yield valuable information that can be used to design more secure systems.it describes original research results and innovative applications in the emerging discipline of digital forensics. In addition, it highlights some of the major technical and legal issues related to digital evidence and electronic crime investigations.
