Hardware and software : Verification and testing ; 1st International Haifa Verification Conference, Haifa, Israel, November 13-16, 2005, Revised Selected Papers

The First Haifa Verification Conference was held at the IBM Haifa Research Lab and at the Haifa University in Israel from November 13 to16, 2005. The conference incorporated three different workshops that took place separately in previous years. The IBM Verification Workshop is now its sixth year, the IBM Software Testing Workshop is now in its fourth year, and the PADTAD Workshop on testing and debugging multi-threaded and parallel software was held for the third time. The Verification Conference was a three-day, single-track conference followed by a one-day tutorial on the testing and review of multi-threaded code. The conference presented a unique combination of fields that brought together the hardware and software testing communities. Merging the different communities under a single roof gave the conference a distinctive flavor and provided the participants with added benefits. While the applications in these separate fields are different, the techniques used are often very similar. By offering lectures in these disparate but related disciplines, the conference engendered an environment of collaboration and discovery.

Haptic and Audio Interaction Design ; 1st International Workshop, HAID 2006, Glasgow, UK, August 31 - September 1, 2006, Proceedings

Overview The International Workshop on Haptic and Audio Interaction Design was - ganized as part of the EPSRC-funded MultiVis project. The main focus of the workshop was to investigate how the modalities of sound and haptics (touch) could be used together in interaction, and what novel interfaces could be p- vided when they are used in conjunction. What are the relative advantages of each of the modalities when used alone and together? Are there reasons why haptic-based information is moreuseful in certain situations than equivalent - dio information? How can di?erent modalities be used together to create c- pelling and useful interaction with computer-based systems?

Handbook to the Construction and Use of Insect Collection and Rearing Devices : A guide for teachers with suggested classroom applications

The purpose of this book is to explain how to build and use insect collecting and rearing devices and through explanations of the various techniques stimulate educators to explore the study of insects in their classrooms. Insects are often given little consideration with regard to humane handling practices. Please remember that insects are living creatures and, as such, are entitled to the same treatment as other living creatures.

Handbook of Population

The Handbook of Population is organized for classroom as well as reference use. It is divided into four sections – Population Structure, Population Processes, Population and the Social Sciences, and Applied Demography – and includes both an Introduction and an Epilogue by the editors. Part I, Population Structure, contains chapters on population size and growth, age and sex composition, marriage and family structure, and demographic analyses of gender, aging, race and ethnicity, and the labor force. Part II is focused on population processes, and includes chapters on fertility, infant and adult mortality, internal and international migration, and the demography of social stratification. Part III reflects the growing multidisciplinary nature of demography. Finally, Part IV recognizes the varied practical applications of demographic perspectives and data to national and global issues and problems.

Guide to Efficient Software Design : An MVC Approach to Concepts, Structures, and Models

This classroom-tested textbook presents an active-learning approach to the foundational concepts of software design. These concepts are then applied to a case study, and reinforced through practice exercises, with the option to follow either a structured design or object-oriented design paradigm. The text applies an incremental and iterative software development approach, emphasizing the use of design characteristics and modeling techniques as a way to represent higher levels of design abstraction, and promoting the model-view-controller (MVC) architecture.

Growth Dynamics of Conifer Tree Rings : Images of Past and Future Environments

Each tree ring contains an image of the time when the ring formed, projected onto the ring's size, structure, and composition. Tree rings thus are natural archives of past environments, and contain records of past climate. While dendrochronologists have investigated the impact of climate on tree-ring growth by empirical–statistical methods, this volume presents a process-based model complementing previous approaches. Basic ideas concerning the biology of tree-ring growth and its control by environmental factors are treated, especially for conifers. The use of the model is illustrated by means of several examples from widely differing environments, and possible future directions for model development and application are discussed. The volume provides an improved mechanistic basis for the interpretation of tree rings as records of past climate. It advances process understanding of the large-scale environmental control of wood growth. As forests are the main carbon sink on land, the results are of great importance for all global change studies.

Group theory : Application to the physics of condensed matter

Every process in physics is governed by selection rules that are the consequence of symmetry requirements. The beauty and strength of group theory resides in the transformation of many complex symmetry operations into a very simple linear algebra. This concise and class-tested book has been pedagogically tailored over 30 years MIT and 2 years at the University Federal of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil. The approach centers on the conviction that teaching group theory in close connection with applications helps students to learn, understand and use it for their own needs. For this reason, the theoretical background is confined to the first 4 introductory chapters (6-8 classroom hours). From there, each chapter develops new theory while introducing applications so that the students can best retain new concepts, build on concepts learned the previous week, and see interrelations between topics as presented.

Group interventions in schools : Promoting mental health for at-risk children and youth

Children who are labeled at-risk often suffer from severe deficiencies in cognitive, affective, and behavioral skills that, if unaddressed, may lead to limited prospects for future success and well-being. Tapping into the therapeutic potential of groups, this volume presents the theory and practice of cognitive-oriented group-centered counseling – combining intrinsic motivation, efficacy retraining, and targeted play therapy and social role-playing – that can be implemented to help children build core social skills and emotional regulation to complement their classroom instruction.

Gravity, Black Holes, and the Very Early Universe : An Introduction to General Relativity and Cosmology

In the early 1900s, Albert Einstein formulated two theories that would forever change the landscape of physics: the Special Theory of Relativity and the General Theory of Relativity. By 1925, quantum mechanics had been born out of the dissection of these two theories, and shortly after that, relativistic quantum field theory. We now had in place some important ties between the laws of physics and the types of particle interactions the new physics was uncovering. Gravity is one of the four types of forces that are found throughout the universe. In fact, although it is a relatively weak force, it operates at huge distances, and so must be accounted for in any cosmological system. Unfortunately, gravity continues to defy our neat categorization of how all the forces in nature work together.
