The volume contains revised versions of selected papers presented during the 29th Annual Conference of the Gesellschaft für Klassifikation (GfKl), the German Classification Society, held at the Otto-von-Guericke-University of Magdeburg, Germany, in March 2005. In addition to papers on the traditional subjects Classification, Clustering, and Data Analysis, there are many papers on a wide range of topics with a strong relation to Computer Science. FORTE (Formal Techniques for Networked and Distributed Systems) 2005 was sp- sored by Working Group 6.1, Technical Committee 6 (TC6) of the International Fed- ation for InformationProcessing (IFIP).The conferenceseries started in 1981underthe name PSTV (ProtocolSpeci?cation, Testing, and Veri?cation).In 1988,a second series under the name FORTE was started. Both series merged to FORTE/PSTV in 1996. The conference name was changed to FORTE in 2001. During its 24-year history, many important contributions have been reported in the conference series. The last ?ve me- ings of FORTE were held in Pisa (Italy), Cheju Island (Korea), Houston (USA), Berlin (Germany), and Madrid (Spain). The 25th FORTE was held from Sunday to Wednesday, October 2–5, 2005 on the beautiful campus of the National Taiwan University (NTU), Taipei, Taiwan, ROC.

Financial Distress, Corporate Restructuring and Firm Survival : An Empirical Analysis of German Panel Data
Philipp Jostarndt analyzes the anatomy of financial distress for a large sample of German corporations. He studies distress-induced changes in ownership and control, success factors in distressed equity infusions, and firms’ choice between in- and out-of-court debt restructurings. Moreover, he conducts a survival analysis to examine the determinants of survival, acquisition, and bankruptcy as alternative paths to exit financial distress. He includes both the firm perspective as well as the market valuations of the undertaken restructurings and, where applicable, relates the findings to the microstructure of Germany’s revised bankruptcy legislation.

Explorations of the Life-World : Continuing Dialogues with Alfred Schutz
This anthology originated from three conferences, which were held at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan, on March 26-28, 1999, at the Univ- sity of Konstanz, Germany, on May 26-29, 1999 and a session at the SPHS annual meeting at the University of Oregon, USA, on October 5-7, 1999. With one exception the contributions to this volume are revised versions of papers read at these meetings. Each of these conferences took place in order to celebrate the centennial of the birthday of Alfred Schutz, who was born April 13, 1899, and died May 20, 1959. First of all we would like to thank Evelyn Schutz-Lang, the daughter of Alfred and Ilse Schutz, for her continuing support and encouragement.
Experimental Unsaturated Soil Mechanics
These proceedings are a continuation of the series of International Conferences in Germany entitled "Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils." The primary objective is to discuss and understand unsaturated soil behaviour such that engineered activities are made better with times in terms of judgement and quality. We all realise by now that in addition to the knowledge on the classical concepts, it becomes an enormous challenging task to adapt convincing new concepts and present them in such a way that it could be used in engineering practices. The experimental studies reported primarily focus on the role of microstructure and fabric for the complex coupled hydro-mechanical behaviour of cohesive frictional materials. Several papers consider the relevance of temperature affecting the constitutive behaviour of clays. Common features of state of the art theoretical and numerical approaches, including theory of porous media and mixture theory, intend to describe the complex multi-field problems of fully coupled thermo-hydraulic-mechanical-chemical initial - boundary value problems.

Evaluating the Employment Effects of Job Creation Schemes in Germany
This book analyses the employment effects of job creation schemes for the participating individuals in Germany. Programmes provide subsidised jobs that are additional in nature and of value for society to hard-to-place individuals. International evidence on the effectiveness suggests that programmes should be targeted to the needs of the unemployed and should be offered early in the unemployment spell. Both questions are studied for job creation schemes in Germany. In the empirical analysis, propensity score matching methods extended to the dynamic setting are applied to administrative data of the Federal Employment Agency.
European Traditions in Didactics of Mathematics
This book discusses several didactic traditions in mathematics education in countries across Europe, including France, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, the Czech and Slovakian Republics, and the Scandinavian states. It shows that while they all share common features both in the practice of learning and teaching at school and in research and development, they each have special features due to specific historical and cultural developments. The book also presents interesting historical facts about these didactic traditions, the theories and examples developed in these countries.
