Group 13 Chemistry III : Industrial Applications

The present issue of Structure and Bonding is dedicated to applied group 13 chemistry, particularly for the elements boron and aluminum, and to a lesser degree gallium and indium. Although boron is a trace element (0.01 g kg 1) in the earth's crust, it has been concentrated in a few locations by geochemical processes and is relatively easy to mine as borax. Aluminum, on the other hand, is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust (82 g kg 1) and dispersed widely throughout the globe. In the chapter Schubert explains the close relationship between the basic properties of the boron compounds and their associated uses. The remaining four chapters focus, to some degree, on aluminum. Since a great deal of literature exists in this area, these chapters are more focused on areas of emerging utility, and contain a great deal of fundamental information. Uhl's contribution in Chapter 2 provides basic synthesis and structural information for aluminum and gallium hydrazides. These types of compounds are being explored as potential molecular precursors to metal nitrides such as the important blue green laser material gallium nitride.

Group 13 Chemistry I : Fundamental New Developments

Depending on the use of the elements, the resulting work can be described under any heading of chemistry. The group 13 elements have been special in this regard due to the very unique characters of the constituent elements. Thus, there is a dramatic change in the properties of the elements when proceeding through the series, B, A1, Ga, In, T1. This difference is one of the main reasons why these elements have seen, and continue to see, such widespread usage in such disparate applications as organic synthesis, electronic and structural materials, and catalysis, to name but a few.

Graded Ferroelectrics, Transpacitors and Transponents

The primary focus of  the book is directed toward polarization-graded ferroelectrics and their active components - transpacitors; however, the findings here are quite general.  The theory of graded ferroics is put on a solid foundation in Chapters 2 and 5, whereas much of the introductory material relies more heavily upon analogy.  This was done so as to provide the reader with an intuitive approach to graded ferroics.  Heterogeneous ferroics are shown as logical extensions of passive semiconductor junction devices such as p-n and   n-p diodes and their active manifestations: transistors, to  transpacitors, transductors, translastics and ultimately to the general active ferroic elements, transponents.

Governance as a trialogue

Focusing specifically on water, this book talks about the core elements of governance, and analyses the linkages between key variables in an effort to increase our understanding of what makes governance good. It is useful for any professional tasked with the responsibility of implementing Integrated Environmental and Water Resource Management.

Globalisation, Poverty and Conflict : A Critical 'Development' Reader

Is ‘development’ passé? Is it merely a by-product or a ‘trickle down’ effect of economic growth, spurred by globalisation? Will poverty simply diminish with increased global markets? This state-of-the-art critical ‘development’ reader deals with these and related questions. Globalisation, Poverty and Conflict examines the inter-relationships between globalisation, poverty and conflict. It complements current debates in the field of development studies and, in an era in which development fatigue seems to have become more profound than ever before, it brings the importance of development once again to the forefront. Achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 is a concrete target which many governments have agreed to work towards.Whether these goals can be realised is another issue. Nonetheless, the Millennium Development Goals have brought more focused attention to development in the past few years and renewed debate about the relationships between the process of globalisation and widespread poverty and the emergence of violent conflicts. The authors in this edited volume discuss these inter-related and highly controversial topical elements of development in a number of chapters organised around three sets of issues: (1) globalisation, inequality and poverty; (2) governance, civil society and poverty; and (3) resource degradation, institutions and conflict. The contributions represent current thinking on (and practice of) development policy, poverty reduction, the need for multi-level democratic institutions, and the containing and prevention of conflicts. The authors confront the predominant mainstream ideas on ‘development’ and propose alternatives.

Fuzzy Logic in Financial Analysis

This volume systematically sets out the basic elements on which to base financial analysis for business in the new century. It incorporates a previous work that can serve as the basis and foundation to the new contributions that are now being made in the field of financial economy and intend to provide business with instruments and models that are suitable for the treatment of the new economic context.

Fuzzy Equational Logic

The book deals with similarity relations defined on a set with functions. The functions are required to map similar elements to similar ones. The book presents basic mathematical properties of structures consisting of similarity-preserving functions and logics for reasoning about similarities. The presented text is self-contained. The notions and results are demonstrated through examples which are graphically illustrated. The book is useful for researchers, but it can also be used as a graduate text.

Fuzzy and Rough Techniques in Medical Diagnosis and Medication

This volume provides readers with selected fuzzy and rough tools used to medical tasks, especially diagnosing and medication. To build a link between theoretical, mathematical excerpts and practical medical applications, the contents is formed as a sequence of occurrences in which a patient appears to be diagnosed and cured. The fuzzy and rough elements are inserted in the book in the order required by the presentation of medical substance to maintain the logical unity of the book’s essence. In conformity with this pattern the essay presents in turn some necessary elements of fuzzy set theory, the classical fuzzy diagnostic model with extensions, the fuzzy diagnostic model with clinical examinations extended throughout time based on distance theory, methods of drug effectiveness measurements and algorithms selecting the optimal medicine. As the complement, the solution of an approximation problem is suggested to find a curve that surrounds two-dimensional clock-like point sets with the little approximation error.

Future campus : Design quality in university buildings

Argues that investment in the higher education sector is a driver for intellectual, social and economic development, offering opportunities for positive impacts for the physical environment on the character and performance of higher education. The editor believes that good outcomes result from good design, which should address elements such as learning from best current practice, the importance of clear briefing, good environmental performance, the positive social impacts and, also, the importance of ensuring a beautiful outcome. It has chapters contributed from leading-edge practices, including case studies with highly illustrated project examples.

Fundamentals of Structural Mechanics

With the advent of the finite element method, our ability to compute has surpassed our ability to formulate theory. As a result, continuum mechanics is no longer the province of the specialist. What an engineer needs to know about mechanics has been forever changed by our capacity to compute. This book attempts to capitalize on the pedagogi cal opportunities implicit in this shift of perspective. It now seems more ap propriate to focus on fundamental principles and formulations than on classical solution techniques.

Fundamentals of Robotic Mechanical Systems : Theory, Methods, and Algorithms

Fundamentals of Robotic Mechanical Systems, Third Edition addresses robots at large - such as multi-fingered hands, walking machines, flight simulators, and machine tools - that rely on mechanical systems to perform their tasks. The author establishes the foundations on which the design, control, and implementation of the underlying mechanical subsystems are based. The treatment assumes familiarity with some calculus, linear algebra, and elementary mechanics; however, the elements of rigid-body mechanics and linear transformations are reviewed in the first chapters, making the presentation self-contained.
