Orthopedic Principles : A Residents Guide

The scope of orthopedic knowledge has expanded to such a degree that it has become increasingly difficult to maintain a fundamental grasp of the required knowledge base. This is compounded by the time constraints on adult learning, with the student or practitioner faced with ever-increasing demands on their time. This text is a much needed resource of orthopedic knowledge, which will prove useful not only to those in training but also to those faced by the ever-increasing demands of certification and recertification examinations. Well illustrated and organized into eight chapters extending from basic science to every specialty of orthopedic surgery (such as hand, foot and ankle, sports medicine, and spine) and put forward in outline form, the reader will find it easy to locate information on a specific subject for direct patient care, conferences or rounds, or examination review. Alternatively, the organization of each chapter facilitates an overall review of the subject matter. By virtue of its succinct style of presentation, this text will prove exceedingly useful to students and practitioners throughout the world.

Ordinary Differential Equations with Applications to Mechanics

The present book has its source in the authors’ wish to create a bridge between the mathematical and the technical disciplines, which need a good knowledge of a strong mathematical tool. The necessity of such an interdisciplinary work drove the authors to publish a first book to this aim with Editura Tehnica, Bucharest, Romania. The present book is a new, English edition of the volume published in 1999. It contains many improvements concerning the theoretical (mathematical) information, as well as new topics, using enlarged and updated references. Only ordinary differential equations and their solutions in an analytical frame were considered, leaving aside their numerical approach.

Optical Burst Switched Networks

Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising new technique which attempts to address the problem of efficiently allocating resources for bursty traffic. In OBS, incoming data is assembled into bursts at the edges of the network, and when the burst is ready to be sent, resources in the network are reserved only for the duration of the burst. The reservation of resources is typically made by an out-of-band one-way control message which precedes the burst by some offset time. By reserving resources only for the duration of the burst, a greater degree of utilization may be achieved in the network. Provides an overview of optical burst switching. Design and research issues involved in the development of OBS networks are discussed, and approaches to providing QoS in OBS networks are presented. Topics include : Optical burst switching node and network architectures / Burst assembly / Signaling protocols / Contention resolution / Burst scheduling / Quality of service in OBS networks

Opioids in medicine : A comprehensive review on the mode of action and the use of analgesics in different clinical pain states

Centers on the treatment of pain using the appropriate opioid and a suitable co-medication whenever necessary. While many physicians or health care providers either subscribe or advocate analgesics in response to a painful situation, their basic knowledge when and how to apply them frequently is scarce. And often there is a lack of sufficient knowledge on their potential side-effects, their mode of action, 2+ their possible interactions with other agents such as ß-blockers, Ca -antagonists, ACE inhibitors and/or benzodiazepines. In addition, not all analgesics are equivalent or equally proficient at alleviating certain painful ailments.
