Difficult Decisions in Thoracic Surgery : An Evidence-Based Approach

Brief chapters are devoted to a specific question or decision in general thoracic surgery that is difficult or controversial. Although some of the content may be available in major thoracic texts, rarely are such questions posed specifically and analyzed according to the level of supporting evidence available. This book is unique in aiming to address the issues in the most clear and informed manner possible; the chapters contain both evidence-based recommendations and descriptions of surgeons’ personal practices based on their experience and the published literature. Chapters are organized around clearly identified recommendations. This provides uniformity to the presentations, making possible the identification of useful material at a glance. A general introduction describes evidence-based data and their use, decision analytic models, and how both physicians and patients make decisions currently. Over 50 different topics are then presented, including a review of available evidence and a general discussion of recommended practice.

Difficoltà in matematica : Osservare, interpretare, intervenire = Difficulty in mathematics : Observe, interpret, intervene

In a school context, difficulties in mathematics are an important phenomenon both for its diffusion and for the consequences it has at various levels: from the personal distress experienced by many students, to the negative attitude that large sections of the population build towards our discipline, up to the drop in enrollment in scientific degree courses. Faced with these difficulties, which often manifest themselves in behaviors such as giving up trying or responding at random, the didactic action aimed at recovery is generally a local action, which arises from the identification of errors and then intervenes on knowledge deemed necessary to respond correctly. But this type of intervention generally proves to be unsuccessful, and the teacher - together with the pupil - develops a sense of helplessness and frustration.

This volume first introduces and reviews these tools separately and then as they pertain to specific infections or groups of diseases. The volume consists of four parts. Parts I-III provide an overview of diagnostic and therapeutic tools, and part IV presents the human mycoses.Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Mycoses is meant to be a concise text that will provide the busy infectious disease, hematology–oncology, pulmonology, or critical care specialist a practical tool to diagnose and manage fungal infections. In addition, the depth of the material in the text will provide these and other medical specialists and trainees an excellent reference and learning resource.

Developmental State Building : The Politics of Emerging Economies

This book modifies and revitalizes the concept of the ‘developmental state’ to understand the politics of emerging economy through nuanced analysis on the roles of human agency in the context of structural transformation. In other words, there is a revived interest in the ‘developmental state’ concept. The nature of the ‘emerging state’ is characterized by its attitude toward economic development and industrialization. Emerging states have engaged in the promotion of agriculture, trade, and industry and played a transformative role to pursue a certain path of economic development. Their success has cast doubt about the principle of laissez faire among the people in the developing world. This doubt, together with the progress of democratization, has prompted policymakers to discover when and how economic policies should deviate from laissez faire, what prevents political leaders and state institutions from being captured by vested interests, and what induce them to drive economic development.

Development of Emotions and Emotion Regulation

The first book to examine emotional development from birth to adulthood, Development of Emotions and Their Regulation fills in significant gaps in the literature by integrating major developmental theories of emotion with robust research on emotion regulation in adults. Noted German psychologists Holodynski and Friedlmeier have written a work that takes on dominant theories such as the desomatization of emotion as people attain maturity, as well as more recent contextual models of emotional growth.

Developing Ambient Intelligence ; Proceedings of the First International Conference on Ambient Intelligence Developments (AmID'06)

As Ambient Intelligence (AmI) ecosystems are rapidly becoming a reality, they raise new research challenges. Unlike predefined static architectures as we know them today, AmI ecosystems are bound to contain a large number of heterogeneous computing, communication infrastructures and devices that will be dynamically assembled. Architectures will be sensitive, adaptive, context-aware and responsive to users‚ needs and habits.Researchers need to both enable their user-friendly application in a growing number of areas while ensuring that these applications remain reliable and secure. Held in Sophia Antipolis (France) from September the 20th to September the 22nd 2006, the first edition of the AmI.d conference tackled the latest research challenges within AmI ecosystems, presented AmI applications as well as security solutions.
