Advances in Artificial Intelligence - IBERAMIA-SBIA 2006 ; 2nd International Joint Conference, 10th Ibero-American Conference on AI, 18th Brazilian AI Symposium, Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, October 23-27, 2006
This decision was a consequence of the successful event organized in 2000, when the First International Joint Conference IBERAMIA/ SBIA 2000 (7th Ibero- American Artifcial Intelligence Conference and 15th Brazilian Artifcial Intel- gence Symposium) occurred in Brazil. Moreover, in 2006 the artifcial intelligence community celebrated the golden anniversary of the 1956 Dartmouth Conference that marked the beginning of artifcial intelligence as a research feld. th SBIA 2006 was the 18 conference of the SBIA conference series, which is the leading Brazilian conference for the presentation of AI research and applications.
Advanced Techniques in Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining
This explosion is a result of the growing use of electronic media. But what is data mining (DM)? A Web search using the Google search engine retrieves many (really many) definitions of data mining. We include here a few interesting ones. One of the simpler definitions is: “As the term suggests, data mining is the analysis of data to establish relationships and identify patterns” [1]. It focuses on identifying relations in data. Our next example is more elaborate: An information extraction activity whose goal is to discover hidden facts contained in databases. Using a combination of machine learning, statistical analysis, modeling techniques and database technology, data mining finds patterns and subtle relationships in data and infers rules that allow the prediction of future results. Typical applications include market segmentation, customer profiling, fraud detection, evaluation of retail promotions, and credit risk analysis .

Advanced methods for knowledge discovery from complex data
An overview of the field, looking at the issues and challenges involved is followed by coverage of recent trends in data mining, including descriptions of some currently popular tools like genetic algorithms, neural networks and case-based reasoning. This provides the context for the subsequent chapters on methods and applications. Part I is devoted to the foundations of mining different types of complex data like trees, graphs, links and sequences. A knowledge discovery approach based on problem decomposition is also described. Part II presents important applications of advanced mining techniques to data in unconventional and complex domains, such as life sciences, world-wide web, image databases, cyber security and sensor networks. About Life : Concepts in Modern Biology
This book uses modern biological knowledge to tackle the question: "What distinguishes living organisms from the non-living world?" In the first few chapters, the authors draw on recent advances in cell and molecular biology to develop an account of the "living state" that applies to all organisms, but only to organisms. Subsequent chapters use this account to explore questions about evolution, the origin of life and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Towards the end of the book the authors consider human evolution, intelligence and the extent to which our species can be regarded as biologically unique. About Life is written as far as possible in non-technical language; all scientific terms are explained straightforwardly when they are introduced. It is aimed at the general, non-specialist reader, but the novel approach that it takes to general issues in biology will also interest students of the life sciences.
A Subtle and Mysterious Machine : The Medical World of Walter Charleton (1619-1707)
Walter Charleton (1619-1707) has been widely depicted as a natural philosopher whose intellectual career mirrored the intellectual ferment of the ‘scientific revolution’. Instead of viewing him as a barometer of intellectual change, I examine the previously unexplored question of his identity as a physician. Examining three of his vernacular medical texts, this volume considers Charleton’s thoughts on anatomy, physiology and the methods by which he sought to understand the invisible processes of the body.
