Solar and Space Weather Radiophysics : Current Status and Future Developments

Most of the chapters of this book are based on invited talks at the FASR Science Workshop, held in Greenbank, W Vin May 2002, and a special session on Solar and Space Weather Radiophysics held at the 200th American Astronomical Society meeting held in Albuquerque, NM in June 2002. Although many of the chapters deal with topics of interest in planning for FASR, other topics in Solar and Space Weather Radiophysics, such as solar radar and interplanetary scintillation, are covered to round out the discipline. The authors have been asked to write with a tutorial approach, to make the book useful to graduate students and scientists new to radio physics. This book is more than a compilation of FASR science topics. The FASR instrument concept is so revolutionary — by extending capability by an order of magnitude in several dimensions at once (frequency coverage, spatial resolution, dynamic range, time resolution, polarizationprecision)—that it challenges scientists to think in new ways.

Software Defined Networks : Architecture and Applications

Software defined networking (SDN) is an architecture designed to make a network more flexible and easier to manage. SDN has been widely adopted across data centers, WANs, and access networks and serves as a foundational element of a comprehensive intent-based networking (IBN) architecture. Although SDN has so far been limited to automated provisioning and configuration, IBN now adds “translation” and “assurance” so that the complete network cycle can be automated, continuously aligning the network to business needs. In 14 chapters, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of an SDN-based network as a scalable distributed system running on commodity hardware. The reader will have a one-stop reference looking into the applications, architectures, functionalities, virtualization, security, and privacy challenges connected to SDN.

Socio-technical innovation bundles for agri-food systems transformation

This book is the result of an expert panel convened by the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability and Nature Sustainability. The panel tackled the seventeen UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030 head-on, with respect to the global systems that produce and distribute food. The panel’s rigorous synthesis and analysis of existing research leads compellingly to multiple actionable recommendations that, if adopted, would simultaneously lead to healthy and nutritious diets, equitable and inclusive value chains, resilience to shocks and stressors, and climate and environmental sustainability.

Smittestopp : A Case Study on Digital Contact Tracing

Describes Smittestopp, the first Norwegian system for digital contact tracing of Covid-19 infections, which was developed in March and early April 2020. The system was deployed after five weeks of development and was active for a little more than two months, when a drop in infection levels in Norway and privacy concerns led to shutting it down. The intention of this book is twofold. First, it reports on the design choices made in the development phase. Second, as one of the only systems in the world that collected population data into a central database and which was used for an entire population, we can share experience on how the design choices impacted the system's operation. By sharing lessons learned and the challenges faced during the development and deployment of the technology, we hope that this book can be a valuable guide for experts from different domains, such as big data collection and analysis, application development, and deployment in a national population, as well as digital tracing.

Sindrome Coronarica Acuta, un nuovo modo di fare diagnosi, un nuovo modo di impostare la terapia = Acute Coronary Syndrome : Anew way of diagnosing and setting therapy

Aims to provide the reader with a concise yet comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the issue of acute coronary syndrome, in light of the enormous body of literature published on the subject over the past decade. Introduction to the concepts of electrocardiography and histophysiopathology, the nosological reclassification of acute coronary disease resulting from the introduction of new myocardial necrosis markers into clinical practice is addressed. It also emphasizes the need for physicians to assess the intrinsic risk of the disease by calculating specific scores proposed by clinical studies. Based on these new concepts, the various therapeutic approaches that should be implemented are analyzed, including both purely pharmacological and more "aggressive" approaches in terms of effectiveness. Ample space is therefore given to the use of new antithrombotic treatments and the choice between pharmacological therapy and invasive approaches using coronary angiography and angioplasty. a crossroads that sometimes puts the doctor in difficulty, but which can imply, if the options are faced rationally, a radical change in the patient's destiny.

Selective verses non selective caries removal

Clinicians are often faced with a dilemma in the treatment of deep caries that approximate the pulp chamber in vital teeth with closed apices, whether to preserve the dental pulp's vitality or remove it to prevent necrosis, infection, and apical periodontitis. Recent evidence supports selective or stepwise dentin removal over nonselective (complete) removal in deep carious lesions, as it avoids pulp exposure and postoperative complications. This study compares selective and nonselective techniques for managing deep carious lesions.

Seeking a Richer Harvest : The Archaeology of Subsistence Intensification, Innovation, and Change

Traditional approaches to the "intensification question" emphasize population pressure, climate change, bureaucratic management, or even land degradation as prerequisites for the onset of new or changing strategies, or the construction and maintenance of agricultural landscapes.

Repairing infrastructures : The maintenance of materiality and power

In this book, Christopher Henke and Benjamin Sims explore the causes and consequences of the strange, ambivalent, and increasingly central role of infrastructure repair in modern life. Henke and Sims offer examples, from local to global, to investigate not only the role of repair in maintaining infrastructures themselves but also the social and political orders that are created and sustained through them. Repair can encompass not only the kind of work we most commonly associate with the term but also any set of practices aimed at restoring a sense of normalcy or credibility to the places and institutions we inhabit in everyday life.

Regulatory Genomics ; RECOMB 2004 International Workshop, RRG 2004, San Diego, CA, USA, March 26-27, 2004, Revised Selected Papers

Research in the field of gene regulation is evolving rapidly in an ever-changing scientific environment. Microarray techniques and comparative genomics have enabled more comprehensive studies of regulatory genomics and are proving to be powerful tools of discovery. The application of chromatin immunoprecipitation and microarrays (chIP-on-chip) to directly study the genomic binding locations of transcription factors has enabled more comprehensive modeling of regulatory networks. In addition, complete genome sequences and the comparison of numerous related species has demonstrated that conservation in non-coding DNA sequences often provides evidence for cis-regulatory binding sites. That said, much is still to be learned about the regulatory networks of these sequenced genomes.
