Stepping into Virtual Reality

Reviews the basic theoretical and practical concepts involved in the visual aspect of virtual environments. Part 2 provides more details on the components, structure and types of virtual worlds that can be created, including detailed explanations of the main modeling and animation techniques for virtual characters - one of the most important aspects in a virtual world. A review and discussion of the main types of VR system architectures defines the different alternatives for organizing and designing a VR application. The final part covers the main principles of Virtual Reality hardware using a generic classification of interaction devices based on a human-centered approach (via the five human senses: vision, sound, touch, smell and taste). The book closes with an overview of successful VR systems and applications and gives a glimpse of what lies in the future.

Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling, and Prediction

Social computing concerns the study of social behavior and context based on computational systems. Behavioral modeling reproduces the social behavior, and allows for experimenting, scenario planning, and deep understanding of behavior, patterns, and potential outcomes. The pervasive use of computer and Internet technologies creates an unprecedented environment where people can share opinions and experiences, exchange ideas, offer suggestions and advice, debate and even conduct experiments. Social computing facilitates behavioral modeling in model building, analysis, pattern mining, anticipation, and prediction. This volume presents material from the first interdisciplinary workshop focused on employing social computing for behavioral modeling and prediction. The book provides a platform for disseminating results and developing new concepts and methodologies aimed at advancing and deepening our understanding of social and behavioral computing to aid critical decision making. The contributions incorporate views from government, industry and academia and they address research problems arising from pressing demands in the real world.

Smart Driver Training Simulation: Save Money. Prevent.

Brings together the basic principles of education and training, modeling, task description and analysis, and the pros and cons of simulation as a training method. It describes the method used to design appropriate teaching and training programs and presents a taxonomy of the main components of the simulator technology. As an example, an interlinked training program which has been carried out is presented, with vehicles and simulators for professional drivers. This is followed by several advanced training programs which have also been tested. These simulator training courses for professional drivers are based on optimized simulator-specific teaching and training matter, covering an economic, anticipatory driving technique as well as self-control, i.e. frustration-resistant driving.

Securing Biometrics Applications

Biometrics is becoming increasingly common in establishments that require high security such as state security and financial sectors. The increased threat to national security by terrorists has led to the explosive popularity of biometrics. A number of biometric devices are now available to capture biometric measurements such as fingerprints, palm, retinal scans, keystroke, voice recognition and facial scanning. However, the accuracy of these measurements varies, which has a direct relevance on the levels of security they offer. With the need to combat the problems related to identity theft and other security issues, society will have to compromise between security and personal freedoms. It investigates and identifies key impacts of biometric security applications, while discovering opportunities and challenges presented by the biometric technologies available. This volume also includes new biometric measures for national ID card, passport and centralized database system.
