Applications of computational intelligence in biology : Current trends and open problems
The purpose of this book is to provide a medium for such an exchange of expertise and concerns. In order to achieve the goal, we have solicited cont- butions from both computational intelligence as well as biology researchers.

An Annotated Timeline of Operations Research: An Informal History recounts the evolution of Operations Research (OR) as a new science - the science of decision making. Arising from the urgent operational issues of World War II, the philosophy and methodology of OR has permeated the resolution of decision problems in business, industry, and government. The Timeline chronicles the history of OR in the form of self-contained, expository entries. Each entry presents a concise explanation of the events and people under discussion, and provides key sources where further relevant information can be obtained. In addition, books and papers that have influenced the development of OR or helped to educate the first generations of OR academics and practitioners are cited throughout the book.

this book present the proceedings of the 5th Workshop on Algorithmsin Bioinformatics (WABI 2005) which took place in Spain, 2005. The Workshop on Algorithms in Bioinformatics highlights research workspecifically developed to address algorithmic problems in biosequence analysis. The emphasis is therefore on statistical and probabilistic algorithms that addressimportant problems in the field of molecular and structural biology. the workshop aims to present recent research results, includingsignificant work in progress, and to identify and explore directions of futureresearch.Original research papers (including significant work in progress) or state-of-the-art surveys were solicited on all aspects of algorithms in bioinformatics,including, but not limited to: exact and approximate algorithms for genomics,genetics, sequence analysis, gene and signal recognition, alignment, molecularevolution, phylogenetics, structure determination or prediction, gene expressionand gene networks, proteomics, functional genomics, and drug design.

This volume contains the 75 contributed papers and the abstracts of the threeinvited lectures presented at the 13th Annual European Symposium on Algo-rithms (ESA 2005), held in Spain, 2005. respectively.Papers were solicited in all areas of algorithmic research, including but notlimited to algorithmic aspects of networks, approximation and on-line algo-rithms, computational biology, computational geometry, computational financeand algorithmic game theory, data structures, database and information re-trieval, external memory algorithms, graph algorithms, graph drawing, machinelearning, mobile computing, pattern matching and data compression, quantumcomputing, and randomized algorithms. The algorithms could be sequential,distributed, or parallel. Submissions were especially encouraged in the area ofmathematical programming and operations research, including combinatorialoptimization, integer programming, polyhedral combinatorics, and semidefiniteprogramming.Each extended abstract was submitted to one of the two tracks.
Affordable housing for smart villages
Initiates a fresh discussion of affordability in rural housing set in the context of the rapidly shifting balance between rural and urban populations. It conceptualises affordability in rural housing along a spectrum that is interlaced with cultural and social values integral to rural livelihoods at both personal and community level. Developed around four intersecting themes: explaining houses and housing in rural settings; exploring affordability in the context of aspirations and vulnerability; rural development agendas involving housing and communities; and construction for resilience in rural communities, the book provides an overview of some of the little understood and sometimes counter-intuitive best practices on rural affordability and affordable housing that have emerged in developing economies over the last thirty years.
Advertising culture and translation : From colonial to global
A first comprehensive study combining and integrating advertising, culture and translation within the framework of colonial, Commonwealth, and postcolonial studies, and globalization. It addresses a number of controversial issues evident in two relatively young disciplines, as a result of decades of research and teaching in university courses. A cross-cultural approach to translational issues and the translatability of advertising cohesively is adopted here, exploring the dynamics of the conflict between the 'centre' and the 'periphery'. It introduces the concept of advertising English as lingua franca (AELF), marking new trends in the domain of varieties of English around the world (VEAW). The data examined here show the ambivalent polarity conditioning advertising and translation: both have been mutually exclusive, and both have been subject to bans, censorship and ideological control, racism, propaganda, and stereotyping. In their fundamental principles and concepts of theories and applications, however, neither discipline cannot exist outside a free market and total freedom of expression and trust

This year, the program consisted of 13 oral sessions, one poster session, ten special tracks, and six keynote presentations. The response to the call for - pers was very strong. We received more than twice the papers received last year. Specifcally, we received over 280 submissions for the main symposium from which we accepted 65 papers for oral presentation (23% acceptance) and 56 papers for poster presentation (20% acceptance). Special track papers were solicited separately through the Organizing and Program Committees of each track. A total of 57 papers were accepted for presentation in the special tracks. All papers were reviewed with an emphasis on potential to contribute to the state of the art in the ?eld. Selection criteria included accuracy and originality of ideas, clarity and signi?cance of results, and presentation quality. The review process was quite rigorous, involving two to three independent blind reviews followed by several days of discussion.

During the discussion period we tried to correct anomalies and errors that might have existed in the initial reviews.
Advances in intelligent data analysis VI ; 6th International symposium on intelligent data analysis, IDA 2005, Madrid, Spain, September 8-10, 2005, Proceedings
One of the superb characteristics of Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) is that it is an interdisciplinary ?eld in which researchers and practitioners from a number of areas are involved in a typical project. This also creates a challenge in which the success of a team depends on the participation of users and domain experts who need to interact with researchers and developers of any IDA system. All this is usually re?ected in successful projects and of course on the papers that were evaluated by this year’s program committee from which the ?nal program has been developed. In our call for papers, we solicited papers on (i) applications and tools, (ii) theory and general principles, and (iii) algorithms and techniques. We received a total of 184 papers, In the end 46 papers were accepted, which are all included in the proceedings and presented at the conference. This year’s papers re?ect the results of applied and theoretical researchfrom a number of disciplines all of which are related to the ?eld of Intelligent Data Analysis. To have the best combination of theoretical and applied research and also provide the best focus.
