Phenomenology and the non-human animal : at the limits of experience
The question of the relation between human and non-human animals in theoretical, ethical and political regards has become a prominent topic within the philosophical debates of the last two decades. This volume explores in substantial ways how phenomenology can contribute to these debates. It offers specific insights into the description and interpretation of the experience of the non-human animal, the relation between phenomenology and anthropology, the relation between phenomenology and psychology, as well as ethical considerations.
Phénoménologie de la religion et herméneutique théologique dans la pensée du jeune Heidegger : Commentaire analytique des Fondements philosophiques de la mystique médiévale (1916-1919) = Phenomenology of religion and theological hermeneutics in the thought of the young Heidegger : Analytical commentary on the Philosophical Foundations of Medieval Mysticism (1916-1919)
Deals with the unknown from Heidegger's texts (Philosophical Bases of Medieval Mysticism) to many scholars / Gives the first in-depth interpretation of the text mentioned above - which, moreover, is not translated into French however - in all languages / Connects two goals: reconstructing Heidegger's early phenomenology of religion but also trying to propose a new kind of phenomenology of religion outside of Heidegger / Not a single comment, but also a real essay in religious phenomenology / Shows how Heidegger's early phenomenology of religion is compatible with a specific theological hermeneutics; thus making Heidegger's thought useful for further-philosophical research such as theology and "Religionswissenschaft"
Pharmacovigilance in the European Union : Practical Implementation across Member States
Presents the results of an in-depth comparative study assessing the implementation of the EU Pharmacovigilance Directive in six EU Member States. By going beyond legal transposition and instead focusing on practical implementation, this study aims to close a gap in EU compliance research. Based on qualitative interviews with relevant actors in Germany, Poland, Portugal, France, Finland and the UK, the authors identify perceived challenges and best-practices, issue recommendations, and thereby contribute to a better understanding of the factors that incentivize or impede the practical implementation of EU law at the national level.
Phantasy, Image Consciousness, and Memory (1898-1925)
This first part of the introduction draws attention to some of thekey features, relations, and distinctions Husserl uncovers in his in-vestigations of presentation and the various forms of re-presentation,focusing particularly on how their respective objects appear. The sec-ond part considers Husserl’s evolving understanding of how acts ofre-presentation are “constituted,” that is, how, thanks to their structure, they are able to “intend” or be conscious of their objects , Although Husserl is chiefly concerned with intuitivere-presentation in this volume, perception is never far from the centerof discussion. This is not surprising, given that Husserl describes per-ception as “presentation,” and memory, phantasy, and their kindred
Phänomenologie der schwachen phantasie : Untersuchungen der psychologie, cognitive science, neurologie und phänomenologie zur funktion der phantasie in der wahrnehmung = Phenomenology of the weak imagination Studies in psychology, cognitive science, neurology and phenomenology on the function of the imagination in perception
This book combines genetic-phenomenological analyzes with studies of empirical psychology, neurology and cognitive research on primates. The first part describes the function of weak phantasms in perception and shows phenomenologically their transcendental performance for perception. Phantasm show up in all layers of the constitution and all sensory fields. This is also shown by the results of empirical psychology, e.g. on hallucinations in normal people, on the inner voice, on filling-in and on Charles-Bonnet syndrome.
Perspectives on mathematical practices : Bringing together philosophy of mathematics, sociology of mathematics, and mathematics Education
Brings together the widest variety of authors from these different domains and, secondly, to show that this diversity does not exclude a sufficient number of common elements to be present. In the eyes of the editors, this book will be considered a success if it can convince its readers of the following: that it is warranted to dream of a realistic and full-fledged theory of mathematical practices, in the plural. If such a theory is possible, it would mean that a number of presently existing fierce oppositions between philosophers, sociologists, educators, and other parties involved, are in fact illusory.
Perspectives on Language and Language Development : Essays in honor of Ruth A. Berman
It is a comprehensive overview of language as a rich, multifaceted system, inspired by the lifework of Ruth A. Berman. Edited by Dorit Ravid and Hava Bat-Zeev Shyldkrot, both from Tel Aviv University, Israel, the book offers state-of-the-art portrayals of linguistic and psycholinguistic phenomena with new insights on the interrelations of language structure, discourse theory, and the development of language and literacy. The volume presents innovative investigations on the interface of language and narrative in a broad range of languages, with a section devoted to linguistic studies of Modern Hebrew. It traces the development of language and literacy from early childhood through adolescence to maturity in spoken and written contexts, and in monolingual as well as multilingual perspectives.
Perspectives on Human Dignity : A Conversation
Explores the idea of human dignity as it arises within these many different domains, opening up the possibility of a multidisciplinary conversation that illuminates the concept itself, as well as the idea of the human to which it stands in an essential relation. The book is not only an intriguing and stimulating exploration of human dignity from a range of perspectives, but also provides an important resource for those who wish to take the exploration further.
Perspectives on Digital Humanism
Aims to set an agenda for research and action in the field of Digital Humanism through short essays written by selected thinkers from a variety of disciplines, including computer science, philosophy, education, law, economics, history, anthropology, political science, and sociology. This initiative emerged from the Vienna Manifesto on Digital Humanism and the associated lecture series. Digital Humanism deals with the complex relationships between people and machines in digital times. It acknowledges the potential of information technology. At the same time, it points to societal threats such as privacy violations and ethical concerns around artificial intelligence, automation and loss of jobs, ongoing monopolization on the Web, and sovereignty.
Perspectives on Aspect
Aims to offer a retrospective view on the past thirty years of research on aspectuality and temporality as well as to develop new perspectives on the future development of the field. Articles contain overviews of the development of the field and/or present the state of the art of current research, suggesting new and upcoming lines of research. An important theme throughout the book is typological variation, and the relevance of empirical data for theory formation.
Permutation, Parametric, and Bootstrap Tests of Hypotheses
This text will equip both practitioners and theorists with the necessary background in testing hypothesis and decision theory to enable innumerable practical applications of statistics. Its intuitive and informal style makes it suitable as a text for both students and researchers. It can serve as the basis a one- or two-semester graduate course as well as a standard handbook of statistical procedures for the practitioners’ desk. The revised and expanded text of the 3rd edition includes many more real-world illustrations from biology, business, clinical trials, economics, geology, law, medicine, social science and engineering along with twice the number of exercises. Real-world problems of missing and censored data, multiple comparisons, nonresponders, after-the-fact covariates, and outliers are dealt with at length. New sections are added on sequential analysis and multivariate analysis plus a chapter on the exact analysis of multi-factor designs based on the recently developed theory of synchronous permutations.
Perceptions of the Independence of Judges in Europe : Congruence of Society and Judiciary
This book is about the perception of the independence of the judiciary in Europe. Do citizens and judges see its independence in the same way? Do judges feel that their independence is respected by the users of the courts, by the leadership of the courts and by politicians? Does the population trust the judiciary more than other public institutions, or less? How does independence of the judiciary work at the national level and at the level of the European Union? These interrelated questions are particularly relevant in times when the independence of the judiciary is under political pressure in several countries in the European Union, giving way to illiberal democracy
People, Population Change and Policies : Lessons from the Population Policy Acceptance Study ; Vol.2 : Demographic Knowledge – Gender – Ageing
This two-volume work presents social cohesion and demographic challenges that are associated with low birth rates and population ageing. It does so from the perspective of citizens and key policy actors. The work analyses peoples’ attitudes about demographic trends and expectations towards private networks and public policies. It places these in the societal context of national specificities in the fourteen countries and regards them as part of the dynamics of the European integration process. Volume 2 focuses on research findings related to general knowledge of people concerning demographic developments, gender issues, and ageing. In addition, it presents the results of a Delphi-Study on the views of key policy actors in the area of demographic developments. The volume concludes with policy implications of the findings, and a reflected overview of all results collected in the two volumes of this work.
People, Population Change and Policies : Lessons from the Population Policy Acceptance Study ; Vol.1 : Family Change
Volume 1 focuses on research findings related to family issues. Its main topics are: attitudes towards family and family change, value of children, fertility intentions, and views on work-family-balance. Particular attention is given to the acceptance of and expectations about family-policies. Additionally, the reader finds methodological and theoretical chapters and learns about the background of the DIALOG project.
People and Things : A Behavioral Approach to Material Culture
This comprehensive text sets forth a theory for understanding the relationship between people and things. Humans, whether in the distant past or in our current world, make choices while inventing, developing, replicating, adopting, and using their technologies. A wide arc of factors, from utilitarian to social and religious can affect these choices. The theoretical model presented here provides the means to understand how people, whether it be Paleolithic stone tool makers or 21st century computer designers and users, negotiate these myriad factors throughout the artifact’s life history. While setting forth a behavioral theory, the book also engages the ideas of other competing theories, focusing especially on agency, practice, and selectionism.
Peer-to-Peer Video : The Economics, Policy, and Culture of Today's New Mass Medium
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) is a communication structure in which individuals interact directly, without going through a centralized system. The implications of this architecture go far beyond the technological realm; the ability of individuals to share digital content files, including audio and video material, in real time, facilitates communication and, at a deeper cultural level, promotes community without hierarchy or strict control. As Eli Noam, Lorenzo Pupillo, and their colleagues demonstrate in this timely and incisive volume, P2P has permeated all facets of society, from YouTube and music downloading experiments on college campuses to international policy debates over intellectual property rights. Peer-to-Peer Video is the first book to apply economic principles to analyze and understand the P2P phenomenon, considering such topics as "consumer demand and the commons" and "file sharing and the copyright crisis."
Peer-Led Team Learning : Evaluation, Dissemination, and Institutionalization of a College Level Initiative
"Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) is one of the success stories resulting from the National Science Foundation's investment in educational innovation. Gafney and Varma-Nelson provide a coherent, tour-de-force look at the in-depth research that has been carried out, not only to understand the effect of PLTL on student learning, but also to understand the nature of the pedagogical method itself. This monograph is a jam-packed, one-stop destination for anyone who wants to learn what it means to understand a widespread pedagogical development in post-secondary science education."
Pedestrian Dynamics : Feedback Control of Crowd Evacuation
Provides various feedback control laws to accomplish the effective evacuation. The book uses the hydrodynamic hyperbolic PDE macroscopic pedestrian models since they are amenable to feedback control design. The control designs are obtained through different nonlinear techniques including Lyapunov functional techniques, feedback linearization in the distributed model, and some discretized techniques.
Pedagogy and ICT Use : In Schools Around the World Findings from the IEA Sites 2006 Study
What impact is the pedagogical use of ICT making in schools around the world? This book addresses such questions through an analysis of the findings from SITES 2006, an international comparative study of pedagogy and ICT use conducted under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA).
Pedagogies of the Imagination : Mythopoetic Curriculum in Educational Practice
This book is about the practice of Imaginal Knowing in education. Imaginal knowing is not fantasy, but is linked to the way humans imagine the real world. Imaginal knowing moves the heart, holds the imagination, finds the fit between self-stories, public myths, and the content of cultural knowledge. It is deeply personal, yet open to the universe. The curriculum, as conceptualized here, is the medium through which imaginal knowing is evoked in both teachers and students.
