It was not a single discovery in the usual sense, because it was based on a series of important interconnected insights over quite a long period of time. These insights made it possible for the very first time to understand the biological reasons for aging in animals and man. It can already be said, however, that the many observations and insights that explain aging will not be accepted as established knowledge for a long time.

The ultimate goal of many information access systems (e.g., digital libraries, the Web, intranets) is to provide the right content to their end-users. This content is increasingly a mixture of text, multimedia, and metadata, and is formatted according to the adopted –W3C standard for information repositories, the so-called eXtensible Markup L- guage (XML). Whereas many of today’s information access systems still treat do- ments as single large (text) blocks, XML offers the opportunity to exploit the internal structure of documents in order to allow for more precise access thus providing more specific answers to user requests. Providing effective access to XML-based content is therefore a key issue for the success of these systems. The aim of the INEX campaign (Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval), which was set up at the beginning of 2002, is to establish infrastructures, XML test suites, and appropriate measurements for evaluating the performance of information retrieval systems that aim at giving effective access to XML content. More precisely, the goal of the INEX initiative is to provide means, in the form of a large XML test collection and appropriate scoring methods, for the evaluation of content-oriented XML retrieval systems.

With the rapid development of Web-based learning, a new set of learning - vironments including virtual classrooms, virtual laboratories and virtual universities are being developed. Advances in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles : State of the Art and the Road to Autonomy
There has been tremendous emphasis in unmanned aerial vehicles, both of fixed (airplanes) and rotary wing (vertical take off and landing, helicopters) types over the past ten years. Applications span both civilian and military domains, the latter being the most important at this stage. This edited book provides a solid and diversified reference source related to basic, applied research and development on small and miniature unmanned aerial vehicles, both fixed and rotary wing. The conference of the 1st IEEE Pacisc-Rim Symposium on Image and Video Technology (PSIVT 2006) was held at Hsinchu, Taiwan, Republic of China, on December 11–13, 2006. This volume contains papers selected for presentation at this conference. The aim of this conference was to bring together theoretical advances and practical implementations contributing to, or being involved in, image and video technology. PSIVT 2006 featured a comprehensive program including tutorials, keynote and invited talks, oral paper presentations, and posters. We received 450 s- missions from 22 countries and accepted 141 papers among those (i.e., de?ning an acceptance rate of 31.3%). The intention was to establish PSIVT as a t- quality series of symposia. Decisions were discult sometimes, but we hope that the ?nal result is acceptable to all involved.
