Content based image retrieval systems

With an advent of technology, huge collection of digital images is formed as repositories on crime prevention, medical diagnosis, military, face finding, satellites and remote sensing. The task of searching for similar images in the repository is difficult. The data is growing enormously which makes it difficult to store and manage. The traditional image retrieval technique is inefficient in retrieving these images. Content-based image retrieval is an approach from data mining community, which provides the solution of managing this huge quantity of data. In this research, a Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system has been developed using color and texture as retrieval features from the image repository. The system allows the user to search for an image based on any of the two features alone or in combination by assigning weights to the features. The histogram and color moments approach is used to extract the color feature, texture feature is extracted using statistical moments and co-occurrence matrix method and the shape feature is extracted using the morphological operations. The images and the extracted feature vectors are stored in the Pickle file. The system is robust as it provides search based on the multiple features. The performance of the system was evaluated by analyzing the retrieval results using precision and recall.

Conscious in a Vegetative State? A Critique of the PVS Concept

This book traces the origins of prevailing perceptions about PVS and submits these to critical examination. In doing this it comes to the conclusion that inadequate attention has been paid to acknowledging what is not known about affected individuals and that assumptions have consistently come to be traded as facts. Re-examination of the basis of the PVS and the adoption of a more scientific approach is long overdue and is owed to the community at large which has generally been provided by many medical practitioners with a 'dumbed-down' account of the condition.

Congenital infections : Toxoplasmosis and rubella

Torch syndrome is caused by a uterine infection with one of the factors that cause Torch syndrome, which disrupts the development of the fetus. Torch syndrome can be prevented by treating the infected pregnant woman, and thus preventing transmission of the infection to the fetus. And some of the factors that cause Torch Syndrome can give the mother permanent immunity, preventing the arrival of the disease and thus fetal malformations. They include a group of symptoms caused by a congenital infection such as toxoplasmosis, rubella, CMV and herpes, or due to other organisms such as syphilis, small viruses, and varicella zoster virus. The Toxoplasma parasite and the rubella virus can provide lasting immunity if the mother was infected before pregnancy in both or if she was vaccinated before pregnancy in Rubella.

Conflicts Between Generalization, Rigor, and Intuition undertakes a historical analysis of the development of two mathematical concepts -negative numbers and infinitely small quantities, mainly in France and Germany, but also in Britain, and the different paths taken there.This book not only discusses the history of the two concepts, but it also introduces a wealth of new knowledge and insights regarding their interrelation as necessary foundations for the emergence of the 19th century concept of analysis. The historical investigation unravels several processes underlying and motivating conceptual change: generalization (in particular, algebraization as an agent for generalizing) and a continued effort of intuitive accessibility which often conflicted with likewise desired rigor. The study focuses on the 18th and the 19th centuries.The book provides a productive unity to a large number of historical sources.

Computer vision for biomedical image applications

The purpose of this book is to submit the workshop, “Computer Vision for Biomedical Image Applications: Current Techniques and Future Trends” (CVBIA), is to examine the diverse applications of computer vision to biomedical image applications, considering both current methods and promising new trends. An additional goal is to provide the opportunity for direct interactions between (1) prominent senior researchers and young scientists, including students, postdoctoral associates and junior faculty; (2) local researchers and international leaders in biomedical image analysis; and (3) computer scientists and medical practitioners. Our CVBIA workshop had two novel characteristics: each contributed paper was authored primarily by a young scientist, and the workshop attracted an unusually large number of well-respected invited speakers (and their papers).

This volume contains papers presented at the 3rd International Workshop on Mathematical Methods, Models and Architectures for Computer Network - curity (MMM-ACNS 2005) held in St. Petersburg, Russia, 2005. The 1st and the 2nd International Workshops on Mathematical Methods, Models and Architectures for Computer Network Security (MMM-ACNS 2001 and MMM-ACNS 2003), hosted by the St. Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation, demonstrated the keen interest of the international research community in the subject area. present CMBSlib, a library of Computational Models of Biological Systems. It is aimed at providing a list of test problems for formalisms, modeling issues and implementation issues in systems biology. The main motivation for CMBSlib is to stimulate research on the formal modeling of biological systems, by facilitating the exchange of formal models between researchers, and by providing a forum of comparison and validation of not only models, but also modeling formalisms and implementations. Unlike a standardization effort, CMBSlib welcomes the most exotic formalisms and models provided they attack the modeling of well documented biological systems. Models of biological systems written in any referenced formalism can be submitted to CMBSlib. No special format or standard is required. We discuss the advantages of and problems encountered in building such a library, give an example of typical entry in the library, and most of all we invite the community to become active contributors to CMBSlib.

The global economic infrastructure is becoming increasingly dependent upon information technology, with computer and communication technology being essential and vital components of Government facilities, power plant systems, medical infrastructures, financial centers and military installations to name a few. Finding effective ways to protect information systems, networks and sensitive data within the critical information infrastructure is challenging even with the most advanced technology and trained professionals. This volume provides the academic and industrial community with a medium for presenting original research and applications related to information assurance and security using computational intelligence techniques.
