Comparative and Global Pedagogies : Equity, Access and Democracy in Education

This book critically examines equality, equity and democracy in education, globally as well as from various perspectives. Globally, there are increasing arguments both for the democratization of education and for the use of education to promote a democratic society. It is argued that democratic schools would better prepare for active citizenship and for a strong civil society which are seen to be the foundation of a democratic state. The book further argues that while there are inspiring examples of schools that engage in peace education or emancipatory pedagogy that work across various ethnic or religious divides, on balance, the forms, structures, ideologies and purposes of formal education interact to make national and international conflict more likely.

Community Schools in Africa : Reaching the Unreached

Over the past decade, community schools similar to those supported by Save the Children have been established in many developing countries, and especially in sub-Saharan Africa. As large numbers of children attend schools started and managed by their own communities and/or by nongovernmental organizations, questions have come up about the impact of such schools at large scale: "Can village-based or community schools have a national impact on access to education, spur improved long-term development strategies and education policy, or achieve or influence Education for All? This book explores these and related questions, drawing on Save the Children’s experience with community-based schooling in four countries: Ethiopia, Malawi, Mali, and Uganda.

CFN Lectures on Functional Nanostructures : Vol.1

This book contains a selection of lectures from the first Summer School organized by the Center for Functional Nanostructures (CFN) at the University of Karlsruhe. The mission of the CFN is to carry out research in the following areas: nanophotonics, nanoelectronics, molecular nanostructures and nanostructured materials. The aim of the summer schools is mainly to exchange new ideas and illustrate emerging research methodologies through a series of lectures. This is reflected by both the selection of topics addressed in the present volume as well as the tutorial aspect of the contributions.

Calculus of one variable

Aimed at first-year undergraduates in mathematics and the physical sciences, the only prerequisites are basic algebra, coordinate geometry and the beginnings of differentiation as covered in school. The transition from school to university mathematics is addressed by means of a systematic development of important classes of techniques, and through careful discussion of the basic definitions and some of the theorems of calculus, with proofs where appropriate, but stopping short of the rigour involved in Real Analysis.The influence of technology on the learning and teaching of mathematics is recognised through the use of the computer algebra and graphical package MAPLE to illustrate many of the ideas.

Building the Foundation : Whole Numbers in the Primary Grades : The 23rd ICMI Study

This twenty-third ICMI Study addresses for the first time mathematics teaching and learning in the primary school (and pre-school) setting, while also taking international perspectives, socio-cultural diversity and institutional constraints into account. One of the main challenges of designing the first ICMI primary school study of this kind is the complex nature of mathematics at the early level. Accordingly, a focus area that is central to the discussion was chosen, together with a number of related questions. The broad area of Whole Number Arithmetic (WNA), including operations and relations and arithmetic word problems, forms the core content of all primary mathematics curricula. this study presents a meta-level analysis and synthesis of what is currently known about WNA, providing a useful base from which to gauge gaps and shortcomings, as well as an opportunity to learn from the practices of different countries and contexts.

Beyond Cartesian Dualism : Encountering affect in the teaching and learning of science.

There is surprisingly little known about affect in science education. Despite periodic forays into monitoring students’ attitudes-toward-science, the effect of affect is too often overlooked. Beyond Cartesian Dualism gathers together contemporary theorizing in this axiomatic area. In fourteen chapters, senior scholars of international standing use their knowledge of the literature and empirical data to model the relationship between cognition and affect in science education. Becoming an urban physics and math teacher : Infinite potential

What happens as beginning urban teachers transition through their first few years in the classroom? This book captures one teacher's journey through the first three years of teaching science and mathematics in a large urban district in the US. The authors focus on Ian's agency as a beginning teacher and explore his success in working with diverse students. Using critical ethnography combined with first-person narrative, they investigate Ian's teaching practices in four contexts: his student teaching experience, his work with students on a summer curriculum development project, his first year of teaching in a small, urban high school, and his second year of teaching in a large, comprehensive high school. In each field, the authors describe the structural changes Ian encounters and the ways in which he re-utilizes the practices he used successfully in previous fields.

Basic Notions of Algebra

Aims to present a general survey of algebra, of its basic notions and main branches.Those parts of the book devoted to the systematic treatment of notions and results of algebra make very limited demands on the reader: we presuppose only that the reader knows calculus, analytic geometry and linear algebra in the form taught in many high schools and colleges. The extent of the prerequisites required in our treatment of examples is harder to state; an acquaintance with projective space, topological spaces, differentiable and complex analytic manifolds and the basic theory of functions of a complex variable is desirable, but the reader should bear in mind that difficulties arising in the treatment of some specific example are likely to be purely local in nature, and not to affect the understanding of the rest of the book.

A Course in Calculus and Real Analysis

This book provides a self-contained and rigorous introduction to calculus of functions of one variable. The presentation and sequencing of topics emphasizes the structural development of calculus. At the same time, due importance is given to computational techniques and applications. The authors have strived to make a distinction between the intrinsic definition of a geometric notion and its analytic characterization. It highlight the fact that calculus provides a firm foundation to several concepts and results that are generally encountered in high school and accepted on faith. For example, one can find here a proof of the classical result that the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is the same for all circles. Also, this book helps get a clear understanding of the concept of an angle and the definitions of the logarithmic, exponential and trigonometric functions together with a proof of the fact that these are not algebraic functions.
