Analysis I

Logical thinking, the analysis of complex relationships, the recognition of und- lying simple structures which are common to a multitude of problems — these are the skills which are needed to do mathematics, and their development is the main goal of mathematics education. Of course, these skills cannot be learned ‘in a vacuum’. Only a continuous struggle with concrete problems and a striving for deep understanding leads to success. A good measure of abstraction is needed to allow one to concentrate on the essential, without being distracted by appearances and irrelevancies. The present book strives for clarity and transparency. Right from the beg- ning, it requires from the reader a willingness to deal with abstract concepts, as well as a considerable measure of self-initiative. For these e?orts, the reader will be richly rewarded in his or her mathematical thinking abilities, and will possess the foundation needed for a deeper penetration into mathematics and its applications.

Analisi matematica II : Teoria ed esercizi con complementi in rete = Mathematical analysis 2 : Theory and exercises with online complements

Intends to support a second teaching of Mathematical Analysis according to the principles of the new Didactic Regulations. It is especially designed for those study courses (such as Engineering, Computer Science, Physics) in which the mathematical tool is a significant part of the training. The fundamental concepts and methods of the differential and integral calculus of several variables, the series of functions and the ordinary differential equations are presented with the primary objective of training the student in their operational but critical use. The didactic setting of the text follows the one used for ANALYSIS I. The method of presentation of the arguments allows a flexible and modular use of the text, in order to respond to the various possible didactic choices in the organization of a Mathematical Analysis course.

Intends to support a first teaching of Mathematical Analysis according to the principles of the new Didactic Regulations. It is especially designed for Engineering, Computer Science, Physics. The text has three different levels of reading. An essential level allows the student to grasp the essential concepts of the subject and to familiarize himself with the related calculation techniques. An intermediate level provides justifications for the main findings and enriches the presentation with useful observations and complements. A third level of reading, based on numerous references to a virtual text available online, allows the more motivated and interested student to deepen his or her preparation on the subject. Numerous examples and exercises with solutions complete the text. The captivating 2-color graphics make this text a fundamental point of reference for the study of the discipline.

Analisi di Rasch e questionari di misura : Applicazioni in medicina e scienze sociali = Rasch analysis and measurement questionnaires: Applications in medicine and social sciences

Evaluation questionnaires are the most used tools nowadays in the field of medicine and the human sciences to evaluate variables such as disability, altruism or pain. However, clinicians are often unfamiliar with these tools. What do they really measure? How are the results to be interpreted? This book tries to answer these questions.

An Introduction to Structural Optimization

This textbook gives an introduction to all three classes of geometry optimization problems of mechanical structures: sizing, shape and topology optimization. The style is explicit and concrete, focusing on problem formulations and numerical solution methods. The treatment is detailed enough to enable readers to write their own implementations. On the book's homepage, programs may be downloaded that further facilitate the learning of the material covered.

An Introduction to Sequential Dynamical Systems

This text is the first to provide a comprehensive introduction to SDS. Driven by numerous examples and thought-provoking problems, the presentation offers good foundational material on finite discrete dynamical systems which leads systematically to an introduction of SDS. Techniques from combinatorics, algebra and graph theory are used to study a broad range of topics, including reversibility, the structure of fixed points and periodic orbits, equivalence, morphisms and reduction. Unlike other books that concentrate on determining the structure of various networks, this book investigates the dynamics over these networks by focusing on how the underlying graph structure influences the properties of the associated dynamical system.

An Introduction to continuous-time stochastic processes : Theory, models, and applications to finance, biology, and medicine

This book is introduction to the theory of continuous-time stochastic processes. A balance of theory and applications, the work features concrete examples of modeling real-world problems from biology, medicine, industrial applications, finance, and insurance using stochastic methods. No previous knowledge of stochastic processes is required. Key topics covered include: * Interacting particles and agent-based models: from polymers to ants * Population dynamics: from birth and death processes to epidemics * Financial market models: the non-arbitrage principle * Contingent claim valuation models: the risk-neutral valuation theory * Risk analysis in insurance

Alternative pseudodifferential analysis : With an application to modular forms

This volume introduces an entirely new pseudodifferential analysis on the line, the opposition of which to the usual (Weyl-type) analysis can be said to reflect that, in representation theory, between the representations from the discrete and from the (full, non-unitary) series, or that between modular forms of the holomorphic and substitute for the usual Moyal-type brackets. This pseudodifferential analysis relies on the one-dimensional case of the recently introduced anaplectic representation and analysis, a competitor of the metaplectic representation and usual analysis.

Alternative concrete - geopolymer concrete : Emerging research and opportunities

Focuses on fly ash-based alkali-activated geopolymer concrete, its production and characteristic properties. The re-use of waste materials and industrial by-products, such as fly ash, is not only economically of interest but also helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The carbon footprint of these materials is much lower than that of concrete using ordinary Portland cement. They thus offer new sustainable solutions to the construction industry.

Altering nature ; Vol.1 : Concepts of ‘Nature’ and ‘The Natural’ in Biotechnology Debates

Volume One, Concepts of 'Nature' and 'The Natural' in Biotechnology Debates, offers nuanced accounts of the ways that nature is invoked and interpreted, both descriptively and prescriptively, by different disciplines, including perspectives from spirituality and religion, philosophy, science and medicine, law and economics, and aesthetics. In the context of that broad discussion.

Algorithms on Trees and Graphs : With Python Code

Introduces graph algorithms on an intuitive basis followed by a detailed exposition using structured pseudocode, with correctness proofs as well as worst-case analyses. Centered around the fundamental issue of graph isomorphism, the content goes beyond classical graph problems of shortest paths, spanning trees, flows in networks, and matchings in bipartite graphs. Advanced algorithmic results and techniques of practical relevance are presented in a coherent and consolidated way. Numerous illustrations, examples, problems, exercises, and a comprehensive bibliography support students and professionals in using the book as a text and source of reference. Furthermore, Python code for all algorithms presented is given in an appendix. Topics and features: Algorithms are first presented on an intuitive basis, followed by a detailed exposition using structured pseudocode / Correctness proofs are given, together with a worst-case analysis of the algorithms / Full implementation of all the algorithms in Python / An extensive chapter is devoted to the algorithmic techniques used in the book / Solutions to all the problems
