Covers the main issues, challenges and techniques concerning the application of qualitative methodologies to the study of migration. It discusses theoretical, epistemological and empirical questions that must be considered before, during, and after undertaking qualitative research in migration studies. It also covers recent innovative developments and addresses the key issues and major challenges that qualitative migration research may face at different stages i.e. crafting the research questions, defining approaches, developing concepts and theoretical frameworks, mapping categories, selecting cases, dealing with concerns of self-reflection, collecting and processing empirical evidence through various techniques, including visual data, dealing with ethical issues, and developing policy-research dialogues. Each chapter discusses relative strengths and limitations of qualitative research. The chapters also identify the main drivers for qualitative research development in migration studies.

q-Clan Geometries in Characteristic 2

This monograph offers the only comprehensive, coherent treatment of the theory - in characteristic 2 - of the so-called flock quadrangles, i.e., those generalized quadrangles (GQ) that arise from q-clans, along with their associated ovals. Special attention is given to the determination of the complete oval stabilizers of each of the ovals associated with a flock GQ. A concise but logically complete introduction to the basic ideas is given. The theory of these flock GQ has evolved over the past two decades and has reached a level of maturation that makes it possible for the first time to give a satisfactory, unified treatment of all the known examples.

Public Interest and Private Enterprize : New Developments : Theoretical Results and Numerical Algorithms

This book deals with the effect of public and semi-public companies on economy. In traditional economic models, several private companies – interested in maximizing their profit – interact (e.g., compete) with each other. Such models help to avoid wild oscillation in production and prices (typical for uncontrolled competition), and to come up with a stable equilibrium solution. The problems become very complex if we take into account the presence of public and semi-public companies – that are interested in public good as well as in the profit. The book contains theoretical results and numerical techniques for computing resulting equilibria. As a case study, it considers the problem of selecting optimal tolls for the public roads – tolls that best balance the public good and the need to recover the cost of building the roads. It is recommended to specialists in economics as well as to students interested in learning the corresponding economic models.

Public Health Policy and Ethics

This volume is unique because of its philosophical approach. It develops a theoretical basis for public health and then examines cutting-edge issues of practice that include social and political issues of public health. In this way the book extends the usual purview of public health. Public Health Policy and Ethics is of interest to those working in public health policy, ethics and social philosophy. It may be used as a textbook for courses on public health policy and ethics, medical ethics, social philosophy and applied or public philosophy.

Psychological Processes in International Negotiation : Theoretical and Practical Perspectives

a unique collaboration between experts in cognitive psychotherapy and political science, Psychological Processes in International Negotiations provides such a resource. Drawing on a wide range of theory and data, from neuroscientific findings and historical events to Albert Ellis’ rational-emotive model of behavior to attachment and meta-cognitive functions, the book explains how the negotiation process works, under both adverse and optimum conditions. The authors identify psychological elements (in participants and in negotiators themselves) that have the greatest effect on negotiation outcomes, including group identity and groupthink, egocentrism, emotional awareness and competence, and the various interpersonal and communication skills, as well as steps readers can take to improve their performance. With this book, negotiators have the tools to come to clear judgments and creative, non-aggressive solutions.

Proportional Hazards Regression

The place in survival analysis now occupied by proportional hazards models and their generalizations is so large that it is no longer conceivable to offer a course on the subject without devoting at least half of the content to this topic alone. This book focuses on the theory and applications of a very broad class of models—proportional hazards and non-proportional hazards models, the former being viewed as a special case of the latter—which underlie modern survival analysis. Unlike other books in this area the emphasis is not on measure theoretic arguments for stochastic integrals and martingales. Instead, while inference based on counting processes and the theory of martingales is covered, much greater weight is placed on more traditional results such as the functional central limit theorem.

Promoting Health for Working Women

Based on European health initiatives on reducing workplace risks and promoting workplace health, Promoting Health for Working Women focuses on issues that predominantly or exclusively affect women, or have gender-specific implications because of differences or special circumstances that exist at the workplace. The editors and their twenty collaborators combine theoretical, research, and practical perspectives to create a framework for studying female workers’ health issues and risks. The methodology for organizing on-site health promotion interventions at the workplace is presented in detail, taking into consideration the key issues women face.

Project management bootcamp : A step-by-step guide

A pragmatic guide for those who need to understand how to deliver projects successfully. The reader journeys through a project stage by stage, discovering what project managers commonly need to achieve at each step. Each step is supported by tables, charts, tips, and tools, which the reader may adopt or adapt to their needs and different ways of organising and delivering projects, including agile approaches, are considered. Because theory can only get you so far, a key element of the book is learning from real projects drawing on the experience of project managers working across three continents. Each chapter ends with challenges to the reader to reflect on their learning, which can be based on a theoretical case study or their own project.
