Generalized collocations methods : Solutions to nonlinear problems

This book examines various mathematical tools—based on generalized collocation methods—to solve nonlinear problems related to partial differential and integro-differential equations. Covered are specific problems and models related to vehicular traffic flow, population dynamics, wave phenomena, heat convection and diffusion, transport phenomena, and pollution. Based on a unified approach combining modeling, mathematical methods, and scientific computation, each chapter begins with several examples and problems solved by computational methods; full details of the solution techniques used are given. The last section of each chapter provides problems and exercises giving readers the opportunity to practice using the mathematical tools already presented.

Generalized Bounds for Convex Multistage Stochastic Programs

The auther was involved in several industry projects in the field of power management, on the occasion of which I was repeatedly c- fronted with complex decision problems under uncertainty. Although usually hard to solve, I quickly learned to appreciate the benefit of stochastic progr- ming models and developed a strong interest in their theoretical properties. Motivated both by practical questions and theoretical concerns, I became p- ticularly interested in the art of finding tight bounds on the optimal value of a given model. The present work attempts to make a contribution to this important branch of stochastic optimization theory. In particular, it aims at extending some classical bounding methods to broader problem classes of practical relevance.

General ultrasound in the critically ill

General ultrasound in the critically ill describes a bedside tool destined for use by the intensivist and any physician involved in emergencies. It specifically deals with findings of immediate clinical relevance throughout the body. New emergency applications of ultrasound in the abdomen, the vessels, the head and the heart are considered. The major topic, the lung, is extensively discussed. Interventional ultrasound forms part of nearly every chapter. Flow charts simplify daily concerns: acute dyspnea, shock, unexplained fever, etc. The strong points and pitfalls of ultrasound are reviewed. Technical notes are mingled with general considerations. Benefiting from the extensive experience of an intensivist intimately familiar with ultrasound, this book accurately answers most daily problems arising in the critically ill. it offers not only an exhaustive atlas but also a permanent aid to the therapeutic decision. All in all, General ultrasound in the critically ill provides a key for practicing a kind of visual medicine. Since 1990 Daniel Lichtenstein has been an intensivist in a medical ICU which already occupied a pioneering place in echocardiography. He has from the beginning devoted his efforts to the development of general ultrasound. He regularly publishes studies on lung ultrasound, his main topic, in the international literature.

Game-Theoretical Semantics : Essays on Semantics by Hintikka, Carlson, Peacocke, Rantala and Saarinen

This book is a collection of studies applying game-theoretical concepts and ideas to analysing the semantics of natural language and some formal languages. The bulk of the book consists of several papers by Hintikka, Carlson and Saarinen and discusses several of the central problems of the semantics of natural language. The topics covered are the semantics of natural language quantifiers, conditionals, pronouns and anaphora more generally. Hintikka’s famous essay presenting examples of "branching quantifier structures" in English, as well as one formulating his "any-every thesis", are included. The book also includes Hintikka’s closely argued philosophical discussion of the relationships between the new semantical games with the language games of Wittgenstein.

Gambling Problems in Youth : Theoretical and Applied Perspectives

Howard J. Shaffer, Ph. D. More than 20 years ago, I first noted that young people in North America were growing up in a context of legalized gambling for their entire lifetime. By the 1980s, for young people, gambling had become an average and expectable part of the social landscape. Amid legal opportunities to gamble in all but two of the United States and with illicit opportunities to gamble in every state, gambling is now ubiquitous in America. With few social sa- tions to limit a young person’s interest in gambling—like their adult co- terparts—young people now gamble in larger numbers and for seemingly higher stakes

Galerkin Finite Element Methods for Parabolic Problems

This book provides insight in the mathematics of Galerkin finite element method as applied to parabolic equations. The approach is based on first discretizing in the spatial variables by Galerkin's method, using piecewise polynomial trial functions, and then applying some single step or multistep time stepping method. The concern is stability and error analysis of approximate solutions in various norms, and under various regularity assumptions on the exact solution.

Galaxy Formation

This second edition of Galaxy Formation is an up-to-date text on astrophysical cosmology, expounding the structure of the classical cosmological models from a contemporary viewpoint. This forms the background to a detailed study of the origin of structure and galaxies in the Universe. The derivations of many of the most important results are derived by simple physical arguments which illuminate the results of more advanced treatments. A very wide range of observational data is brought to bear upon these problems, including the most recent results from WMAP, the Hubble Space Telescope, galaxy surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, studies of Type 1a supernovae, and many other observations.

Fuzzy portfolio optimization : Theory and methods

This is the first monograph on fuzzy portfolio optimization. By using fuzzy mathematical approaches, quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis, the experts' knowledge and the investors' subjective opinions can be better integrated into portfolio selection models. The contents of this book mainly comprise of the authors' research results for fuzzy portfolio selection problems in recent years. In addition, in the book, the authors introduce some other important progress in the field of fuzzy portfolio optimization. Some fundamental issues and problems of portfolio selection have been studied systematically and extensively by the authors to apply fuzzy systems theory and optimization methods. A new framework for investment analysis is presented in this book. A series of portfolio selection models are given and some of them are more efficient for practical applications. Some application examples are given to illustrate those models.

Fuzzy Modeling with Spatial Information for Geographic Problems

This book focuses on research advances in approaches for incorporating explicit handling of uncertainty, especially by fuzzy sets, to address geographic problems. It has two aims: to stimulate research in the theory and application of fuzzy sets to spatial information management and geographic problem solving; and to highlight advances that have matured so much that geoscientists, computer scientists, geographers, et al. use fuzzy modeling. The book includes examples of the use of fuzzy sets in representational issues such as terrain features, landscape morphology, spatial extents and approaches for spatial interpolation, plus applications using fuzzy sets covering data mining, spatial decision making, ecological simulation, and reliability in GIS.

Fuzzy Group Theory

This book presents an up-to-date account of research in important topics of fuzzy group theory. The book concentrates on the theoretical aspects of fuzzy subgroups of a group. It also includes applications to some abstract recognition problems and to coding theory. The book begins with basic properties of fuzzy subgroups. The notions of ascending series and descending series of fuzzy subgroups are used to define nilpotency of a fuzzy subgroup. The material presented in this book makes it a good reference for graduate students and researchers working in fuzzy group theory.
